The LoC standoff has taken a new spin after Pakistan defied all the international conventions and claimed diplomatic immunity for a trucker who has been arrested by J&K police for smuggling Rs 100 crore worth narcotics from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) into the Valley.

"Director general of trade and travel of PoK (Brigadier (retd) Mohammad Ismail Khan) told us during a meeting that the driver (caught with brown sugar) has a diplomatic immunity. We told them do they really believe that drivers (plying cross LoC trucks) have diplomatic immunity. We also told them to show us any order which says that they have the diplomatic immunity," Shailendra Kumar, divisional commissioner of Kashmir, told dna.

The standoff began on Friday when Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a PoK driver after 114 packets of contraband brown sugar worth Rs100 crore were recovered from a his truck. A local trader, who was to receive the consignment, has also been arrested in the valley.

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) authorities have detained 27 Indian drivers along with their trucks demanding the release of Pakistani driver along with truck and the consignment of brown sugar. Pakistani authorities have also refused to receive 48 drivers and their trucks that had arrived here on Friday.

"We asked them to speak to your higher ups. It is our land and our law will take its course. We have no authority to release the driver. The matter is before the courts which will only decide," said Kumar.

Jammu and Kashmir government has written to the centre to take the stand off issue with Pakistan through the diplomatic channels. This followed the communication from the district development commissioner of Baramulla GA Khawja to J&K government to take up the issue with the external affairs ministry for perusal of matter with Pakistan.

This thread topic is a prime candidate for http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/...terrorist-state-pakistan-idiotic-musings.html

Basically it's this, A lot of people in Pak were looking at their own govt and how it could not protect it's own people with drones, people being taken into custody just on the suspicion of being a terrorist, while India managed to get it's diplomat out from the U.S.
Now to show that "Pak is stronk! Pak stand up to evil big bully!", they are trying to create a situation, out of a drug smuggler.

BTW, we have given them MFN status, but they havent given it to us yet. They now want to propose something else instead, and still accuse us of not doing enough to help trade :/ Screw these guys.

If the trucker has diplomatic immunity then what is Pakistan acknowledging??

Are Pakistani authorities officially confirming they indulge in drug trafficking???

‘Diplomatic’ spat over Pak truck driver

Srinagar, Jan. 20: Authorities in Kashmir say it's a no-brainer. Diplomats, after all, don't go around driving trucks.

So, please come up with something more "intelligent", they have told their counterparts across the border.

If Kashmir's topmost administrative officer, Shailendra Kumar, is to be believed, Pakistani authorities have claimed diplomatic immunity for a truck driver arrested here for ferrying narcotics.

The alleged claim has come at a time the standoff — which began on Friday after the driver was caught with Rs 100 crore worth of narcotics and was followed by the tit-for-tat detention of over two dozen Indian truckers across the border — worsened today.

Pakistan cancelled the weekly Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service, the peace caravan that was introduced in 2005 as a confidence-building measure.

Trade across the Line of Control has remained suspended since Friday.

"Yes, they (the Pakistanis) are claiming (diplomatic immunity for the truck driver). We advised (them) that you please seek the advice of your superiors because diplomatic immunity is available to diplomats (and) "¦ they (diplomats) don't drive trucks, that too with narcotics," Kumar, Kashmir's divisional commissioner, told The Telegraph.

Kumar was speaking about yesterday's meeting between retired brigadier Mohammad Ismael Khan, director-general of trade and travel, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and Baramulla district magistrate Khawaja Ghulam Ahmad at Kaman Post that overlooks the LoC.

An officer, who was part of the meeting, said he didn't hear any Pakistani official making such a claim. "All I heard them say was that they should return the driver and that they would try him in their country," he said.

Kumar, however, insisted the Pakistanis did make such a claim, but added that he would rather take it as a joke. "I have to move on an optimistic platform and would not like to create a diplomatic problem," he said.

"I am not sure whether they were joking. At times when we talk, certain things are raised jokingly. But we definitely told (them) they (drivers) are not in the embassy, and truck drivers are never diplomats.

"Let us take it that it was a joke because an officer (who is) a retired brigadier"¦ must be aware that these things (diplomatic immunity) are not available"¦ to truck drivers."

Kumar said the Pakistanis were asked to check their records and come up with a "more intelligent argument".

"He (the diver) was travelling with contraband items, only the judiciary can take a view on it. We can't," Kumar said.

The officer said Pakistani authorities had detained 27 Indian truck drivers and seized the vehicles. The Pakistanis are also reportedly refusing to let in 48 truck drivers from PoK, arguing that the arrested driver should be returned too.

"We took 48 truckers (from PoK) to Kaman Post yesterday where they refused to take them in," Kumar said.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has written to the Centre to take up the issue with Islamabad through diplomatic channels.

Pakistan today forced the suspension of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service, started for members of divided families who live on either side of the LoC.

Regional passport officer, Kashmir, Firdous Iqbal said no buses plied today. "Fifteen people were scheduled to cross over to the other side and seven from that side to here," he said.

As long as there are people like Mani Shankar Iyer, Manish Tiwari and Man Mohan Singh the trade with Pakistan will go as usual.

India summons envoy over stalled bus service
NEW DELHI: India summoned Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner on Tuesday in connection with the suspension of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot-Poonch bus services by Pakistan, which has demanded release of its national arrested for alleged smuggling of narcotics worth 1 billion rupees across the LoC, the Press Trust of India reported.

It said Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Mansoor Ahmed Khan was summoned by the Joint Secretary in-charge of the Pakistan division in the Ministry of External Affairs, Rudrendra Tandon, and delivered a "strong diplomatic message".

Authorities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Wednesday suspended the cross-Line of Control (LoC) bus service on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot-Poonch sectors demanding the release of the Pakistani driver, the PTI said.

According to the report, tension mounted at the Kaman post area in North Kashmir when police detained a truck allegedly carrying 114 packets of brown sugar, valued at Rs1 billion in international market, and arrested the driver along with two more people from Bandipore who were to receive the consignment.

In a tit-for-tat action, authorities in Muzaffarabad detained 27 Indian truck drivers and demanded release of their driver.

The deadlock intensified when authorities in Srinagar were informed by Muzaffarabad about suspension of bus services on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot-Poonch sector.

An Indian foreign ministry spokesman expressed surprise that Pakistan "chose to hold hostage" trans-border trade and bus services, which bring immense humanitarian benefits across the borders, for the sake of saving those who indulge in drug trade.

He also said the foreign ministries of the two countries were trying to resolve the situation as early as possible.

While one driver has been arrested, 48 others from Pakistan side of Kashmir are stranded at Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre since the stand-off began last week, the PTI said. The passenger bus service was started in April 2005 while the trade began in October 2008.

Can't blame Pakistanis if they think that their diplomats are truckers!

They are a versatile lot.

They are multi tasking chaps - trucker, diplomat, drug traffickers and basic scoundrels to add to their qualifications!

They even have a President, who is a military man, a General, a coup organiser, and now guilty of treason!

What a way to go!
