Trials of stealth frigate "Teg" have started in Russia

Russia commenced sea trials of the India Navy's first of the three advanced stealth frigates in the Baltic Sea

'Teg', the frigate of the Project 11356, also known as Talwar Class, is first of the three frigates ordered by the Indian Navy in 2006 under a 1.5 billion dollar deal with Russia. The two other warships of the same class - the 'Tarkash' (Quiver) and the 'Trikand' (Bow) are at various stages of construction at the "Yantar" naval shipyard in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad.

According to 'Yantar' shipbuilder, the Teg is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy in the beginning of 2012 to be followed by the 'Tarkash' in the same year and finally the "Trikand" in 2013. The new frigates will be armed with deadly BrahMos cruise missiles, capable of destroying enemy ships and land targets.

India Navy already operates three of these stealth frigates and had ordered three more to bolster its fleet, The Economic Times said. Earlier in the last decade, Russia's another Baltiisky Zavod shipyard in St Petersburg had built first three of the stealth frigates -INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar.

Its time we stop giving away orders to foreign shipyards.

Yesterday i read L&T shipyard coming up near Chennai which will be ready by next year can build ships upto 18,000 tonnes.

Hopefully it gets the order for building LPDs too :)

Talwar class warships would be the last order given to a Foreign Shipyard. Other than Submarines, The Navy will get all other Future prospects from our own shipyard. Unless if wanted to speed up the delivery of warships, we may go for foreign shipyards.

We actually signed the contract in 1997 has a stop gap measure until the Project 17 Class frigates enter service and the Navy is was undergoing rapid expansion and modernisation. Back in 90s, Our Shipyards were pre-occupied with building warships for Navy. There were no private sector companies available and weren't capable for constructing big ships.

i beg to differ my friends as MOD and navy has clearly stated that the no of ships India wants and the production capacity of domestic shipyards have big difference and thus indian navy is forced to go abroad which even includes sri lanka

Next 7 should look something like Fremm.

I dont think so, Our private shipywards will come online next year, also Russians are not trustable anymore they even asked extra 100 million for the construction of last batch of talwar class.
