Treat Narendra Modi as a state leader sans pan-India appeal: Congress spokesperson

Hit by a realisation that its vituperative attacks on Narendra Modi were perhaps only helping boost his profile, the Congress party has decided to change tack and downplay his importance.

Fearing polarisation of votes ahead of parliamentary polls, the party has altered its brief to all spokespersons and directed them to tone down the rhetoric against the Gujarat chief minister and the BJP's presumptive nominee for prime ministership in 2014.

Congress spokespersons have been directed to revert to the party's earlier line of treating Modi as just a "state leader without a pan-India appeal" and leave it to the party's state unit to tackle him.

General Secretary in charge of communications Ajay Maken spoke to Congress spokespersons and TV panelists individually on Monday and directed them to refrain from attacking Modi directly, people familiar with the matter have told ET. Maken told the Congress' media army that there should be no direct attack and instead they should only use statistics to challenge Modi's claim of growth and good administration.

"Even in debates on television there should be no personal remarks and if there is anything on Modi it should be with proper preparation backed with sound stats," one senior leader present at the meeting said. The party had long followed a strategy of ignoring Modi, and Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi had refrained from directly responding to the BJP leader's barbs at them in the run-up to 2012 Gujarat assembly polls.

Congress spokespersons use to brush aside questions on Modi's speeches attacking the Gandhi family and UPA policies by dismissively referring to him as just a "state CM". Such a strategy was adopted after Gandhi's "maut ka saudagar" (merchant of death) speech before the 2007 assembly elections, which boomeranged on the Congress and helped Modi sweep the state. But, of late, the Congress had abandoned the strategy of ignoring him and started tackling Modi directly.

The latest rethink appears to have been prompted by the war of words that broke out between the two camps after Independence Day celebrations last week. Shortly after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh delivered his I-Day speech, Modi delivered his address in which he criticised the PM and the Congress leadership, choosing comments that generated a lot of political heat and, according to some analysts, were aimed at projecting himself at the same level as Singh or the Gandhis.

Treat Narendra Modi as a state leader sans pan-India appeal: Congress spokesperson - The Economic Times

    ****************************

As I have been saying before the same thing that the foolish Congress spokespersons by keeping Modi as their centre of focus and going hammer and tongs, at times with rather contrived accusation and imagery, is merely making Modi larger than life.

It is these Congresspersons and Salman Khurshed who are the proverbial frogs in the well.

They have woken up when the horse had bolted the stable.

Indeed, the Congress spokesperson have heeded the advice and toned down, except that Johnny come Lately, Sanjay Jha. He continues to be the witless windbag of irrelevance as usual.

Missing another shrill school-boyish and continuous interjecting voice - Tehseen Poonawalla.

Tehseen could have been off the TV because of this:

After a Congress close aide Tehseen Poonawalla tweeted that India should recognize the prime minister of Pakistan occupied Kashmir, Chaudhary Abdul Majid, BJP Spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said that Congress has betrayed India by saying this and the area is considered an integral part of India. He also said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi should take actions against it.

so after they have spent all their time attacking him, now they are saying he is not important?

that makes no sense at all.

if he has no importance, then why did they spend all their time attacking him?

Simple! They are incompetant.... now that the Rupee @65, onions @60, Pak-China border tensions, communal riots every month all in non-BJP run states.....Modi is gonna laugh all the way to the PM's chair.

In the West they call it going for broke. After loosing even your loincloth you cannot set any conditions....the die has been cast. The dynasty has completely lost the plot.

All in all a good wake up call for the Indian public

The simple fact that Congress has to issue a fatwa like this to it's minions, shows that Modi has a broad pan-Indian appeal. As opposed to Rahul baba who doesn't even have a state appeal, he would be an outsider in each and every state. His native state is Congress party office.

Ajay Maken suggesting not to personal attack Modi?? What a joke !!

I have done research which suggest some senior congress members are involved in social media "abuse modi campaign".
That includes Ajay Maken, Digvijay Singh, Pawan Khera and Sanjay Jha. They actually hired Delhi based web company for social media and websites which makes fun of Modi. @VIP I wanted to send this to that NDTV show but you know why I didn't. :p
