Does India have any five stars? The Army must be big enough.

We don't have Joint Chiefs like the US. Wonder when we can have a set up like that?

Also the pros and cons of such a setup.

It gets stuck in who will be in that chair. All three branches want it!

Then the establishment is not mature enough for it. Perhaps a younger generation of commanders will change that.

That's how all problems are expected to be fixed in India. Hope the younger generation are better than the last. Quite hopeless.

In this particular case, it depends on the pros and cons. I don't know how all that works.

@Yusuf - Lieutenants do not command platoons in Indian Army. Platoon Commanders are JCOs. Lieutenants are Company 2ICs. Though in actual operations they may lead a platoon sized (or larger) force for critical actions. However, in the Armoured Corps and Artillery, Lts are Troop Leaders / Commanders.

Technically a Lt is a Coy 2IC.

In good infantry units, the Lt is put through his paces as a Pl Cdr and made to do the Ummedwar Cadre, NK to Hav and Hav to Nb Sub Cadre before he is allowed to be a Coy 2IC.

Unless one can handle a Pl in all its aspects, it is difficult to comd a Coy efficiently, both administratively and tactically.
