How many time zones are there in India? Why is there a GMT +5:30 zone, and not an even +5:00 or +6:00? Or is my Dell laptop just misinformed?

Just one time zone. There have been proposals recently, to create one more for the NorthEastern states. No progress on that so far...

only one Standard time zone is UTC/GMT +5:30 hours Indian Standard Time is calculated on the basis of 82.5° E longitude, from a clock tower in Mirzapur (25.15°N 82.58°E) (near Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh) which is nearly on the corresponding longitude reference line.[3]

In the tz database it is represented by Asia/Kolkata

what india requires is 3 time zones.

1 for the west zone
2 for the north/central/south zones
3 east/north-east zones

all having 30mins time gap.

technically time is different for every person if you take into account the minutest details.

Yes, India is slightly more than 1/3 the size of the US, but if your country were rotated 90 degrees you could have at least one more time zone, I think. :)

Well, actually the E-W extent of India is almost the same as the N-S. North to South, India measures 3214 km, and East to West 2,993 km. The difference is only around around 300 km...

having stayed in a country with maximum number of time zones i suggest its best to ahve a central single time zone. it offers no benefit to have so many time zones .

what india can have is daylight saving time during winter for NE and eastern zones

Two Time-zones in India

Two Time-zones in India

If it were at all to be implemented, I would recommend the following.

I am, however, ambivalent on the issue.
