Narendra Modi landed in Kolkata for his first election rally in West Bengal.

The state BJP is in hopes that Modi, their prime ministerial candidate, will change the fortunes of Bengal in time for the general elections that are set to take place in May. The best performance from the party so far has been two Lok Sabha seats in the year 1999.

Modi started the speech by marveling how he had come to Bengal several times before but had never seen such a sea of humanity like one that was present to witness his address today.

“Those sitting in Delhi and talking about the third front should come here and see which way the wind is blowing. The people of India have made their decision” he proclaimed.

Modi spoke about at length about the very close bond that Gujarat and West Bengal shared. West Bengal’s beloved Gurudev Tagore’s brother had spent several years in Gujarat, he said.

He delcared that the Haripura Congress session happened in Gujarat and that Subhas Babu had shouwn his strength there.

“Swami Vivekananda dreamt of a Jagat Guru Bharat” said Modi. He also added that if we have to make India a Vishwa Guru, then West Bengal must be a Rashtra Guru, and that Swami Vivekananda’s dream would happen only then.

He also said that it was natural for him to remember Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee when he reached West Bengal, for the doctor had said long ago that the nation would not progress under Congress rule. He added that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a visionary who had sown the seeds of a movement that touched the hearts of every Indian.

Speaking openly about the upcoming general elections of 2014, Modi said that this time it would be different, and that the calculations of all the political pundits, who measure things but cannot gauge the mood of the people, will go wrong.

Is asking for development not your right, after so many years, he questioned. He stated that the existing parties were not bothered about the common man and woman, and that their needs and wants were not considered.

“Vikas bhi, Imaan bhi, Gareebon ka samman bhi” he said, adding that we have embraced this mantra.

Congratulating the state, he said that they had bid farewell to those who had ruined West Bengal for 35 years, and that this was a very good start. But he also wanted to if the Parivartan has come, and if the state could feel that change.

He stated that he wanted to speak openly and directly to people of West Bengal, and that nothing should come between them. He also added that the assembly elections were not yet upon us, but that Bengal could do one thing, and that was to show the way to the nation.

He made a request to the state, beseeching them to make BJP win all the Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal. He promised that if they voted for BJP and then ask them what they did, and let them compete, they would should what the other party did, and what they would do in Delhi for West Bengal.

He added that if they gave BJP all the seats, he would love to travel to West Bengal more often and to serve them even more.

He spoke at length of how the first Ambassador car had been made in West Bengal, but how the state had become so impoverished that the youth in the state had to leave to find jobs. He also mentioned how, at one time, West Bengal’s contribution to agriculture was 10% but how it has now diminished to 3-4%

“People of West Bengal are revolutionary. You took a big decision in the State Elections now take a brave decision in 2014″ he said.

Modi declared that Bengal was a land blessed by both goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati, and that the land could give a lot to the nation. He wanted to know why there were youth but that development was lagging in the state, and why agriculture was not developing in the state. “Shram Ko Punji Mana Jaye, Shram Ki Pratishtha Ho,” he said adding that Shrameva Jayate was the mantra.

He queried why coal was close to Kolkata but there was still no electricity and schools from Kolkata were known across India but rural areas did not have schools, which most schools did not have power connectivity.

He also said that West Bengal lacked sanitation facilities.

“The Third Front will make India Third Grade”, he said, and added that the state needed to reject them forever. He also said that when polls arrived, the Third Front only did two things, talk of the poor and sing songs of secularism.

Directing the question at the Third Front, Modi wanted to ask the secular leaders of West Bengal why it was that the Haj quote for West Bengal was much lesser than it was for Gujarat.

He said that, which influx from Bangladesh was worrying people in Assam and West Bengal, people of India had the first right to resources and development.

“My definition of secularism is very clear” Modi declared. “The sole religion of the government is Nation First, and the holy book is the Indian Constitution”

“Vote for the Lotus, your gain is 3-fold. Mamata ji will work here, we will work in Delhi, and Pranab Dada is above me” he promised.

He added how, when Indira Gandhi was killed, Rajiv Gandhi was in Kolkata, and how democracy entailed that the senior-most minister at the time, Pranab ji, should have been the Prime Minister, but how, it did not happen and Pranab da was not taken into the ministry, though it would have been better if he had become the PM.

He ended his speech by saying “NSupport us, and we will give you Surajya” and added that he was saying this from the land of Subhas Babu.

Nitish, Left leaders meet to give shape to 'third force' - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and the Left leadership on Monday had a breakfast meeting with other leaders to discuss the formation of a non-Congress, non-BJP alliance for the next Lok Sabha polls.

The informal meeting took place at the residence of JD(S) chief and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda in which it was decided that leaders of 11 non-Congress non-BJP parties, who recently came together in Parliament, will hold a formal meeting after the extended winter session is over to give concrete shape to the "third force".

The breakfast meeting was attended by CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI veteran AB Bardhan and Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas.

Sources said that one or two common public rallies to give the message of unity of a non-Congress, non-BJP force in the next general elections may be held but the plans will concretise only after the meeting of leaders of the 11 parties after the session.

"It was an informal meeting. Since the Bihar chief minister was in the national capital, the leaders decided to meet over breakfast. It was decided to evolve a strategy to forge a non-Congress, non-BJP formation ahead of the next Lok Sabha polls. It was agreed that leaders of 11 such parties, who had come together on February 5 to forge a common strategy in Parliament, will hold a meeting in Delhi and decide the future course of action," JD(S) secretary general Danish Ali, who attended the meeting, told PTI.

In indications of emergence of a Third Front in view of the Lok Sabha elections, 11 non-Congress, non-BJP parties had on February 5 formally joined hands as a block in Parliament to pitch for pro-people, anti-communal and federal agenda.

The announcement was made at a joint press conference of leaders of these parties including the four Left parties, Samajwadi Party, JD(U), AIADMK, AGP, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha, JD(S) and BJD, which was then described as the "first step" after the parties came together on October 30 last year for a convention against communalism attended by 17 parties.

JD(U), which walked out of NDA snapping its 17-year-old ties with BJP, hopes to play significant role in the formation of such a front, given the fact that the erstwhile Janta Dal had always been an axis force, whenever such a Third Force was formed in the country.

There have been indications from the party that SP, JD(U) and JD(S) will be inching closer as the polls come closer.

Given the personalities, their egos and and desire to be the PM, the Third or Federal Front is a Recipe for disaster.

One wonders if they will even get off the starting block.
