Syria uprising: Al-Qaeda's al-Zawahiri lends support

Al-Qaeda's leader has backed the anti-government uprising in Syria, urging the opposition not to rely on the Arab League or the West for help.

In a video message, Ayman al-Zawahiri said the Syrian rebels had the right to use whatever means they saw fit to get rid of a "cancerous regime".

Egyptian-born Zawahiri, 62, took over as head of al-Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011.

The Syrian government blamed al-Qaeda for two blasts in Damascus in December.

That double suicide bombing killed 44 people.
'Muddy the waters'

Zawahiri, who has a $25m (£15m) US bounty on his head, addressed his video message to the "Lions of Syria".

He urged them to depend on their own efforts and sacrifices, and not on what he called the "failed states of the Arab League, the West, or Turkey".

"If we want freedom, we must be liberated from this regime. If we want justice, we must retaliate against this regime," he said in the video.

Arab League ministers are meeting in Cairo on Sunday to discuss the crisis in Syria, following the league's decision to suspend its observer mission in the country last month.

Zawahiri called on militants in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, to rise up and support what he called "their brothers in Syria".

There have already been reports of Islamic militants crossing into Syria from Iraq.

It is the clearest sign yet of involvement by al-Qaeda in the uprising in Syria, as it takes on increasingly an aspect of armed insurgency as well as popular protest, says the BBC's Jim Muir, in neighbouring Lebanon.

US officials are reported to believe the recent suicide car bombings in Damascus and Aleppo were the work of al-Qaeda.

Opposition activists have blamed the Syrian government itself for the attacks.

If violent Islamic extremists are becoming increasingly involved, it is going to muddy the waters of an already very complex situation, our correspondent says.

It was, as explained by an acquaintance, an US policy to drive a wedge in the Islamic world. They went into Iraq, then Afghanistan and are targeting Iran now. I don't think that was a reason but could be an added bonus.

Now, it seems like we will end up with a contiguous strip of Shia ruled countries. Bahrain seems to have fallen in the wrong side of the pond.

It is important for the US to keep the Shias of Iran and the Middle East off balance.

If one notices the oilfields are in Shia areas be it Iran, Iraq or Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi oil fields are in Eastern parts of Saudi Arabia and that part has Shia majority!

Even Bahrain is a Shia majority with a Sunni Sultan!

ура!Russia Buying Into Arab League's Plan to Send UN Peace-Keeping Troops to Syria
Russia's foreign minister says he is examining an Arab League proposal to send a peacekeeping mission to Syria, but that the bloodshed must end before any such mission takes place.

Speaking after a meeting on Monday in the Russian capital, Moscow, with his Emirati counterpart, Sergei Lavrov said there should be further dialogue in order to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis.

"We have joint efforts to support the [Syrian] people and its aspiration and hopes for a better life, democratic development, joint effort for this aspiration to stop this bloodshed," he said.

"For this reason we need wide inter-Syrian dialogue and co-operation to find a solution or decisions which will meet the interest of all Syrians and which will rule out interference from outside."

He must think all people are Russians that he can just easily trick by word plays! When the bloodshed ends in Syria it would mean that Assad and his forces already massacred all those opposed to his rule. What's the point then of UN international peacekeeping force?

In Iraq invasion of Kuwait , Saddam captured that Eastern parts of Saudi Arabia which is producing 80% of Saudi oil and it was the reason behind Saudi calling american help and paying their bill to expel Saddam.

Americans would want to interfere, Iranians are responsible for a huge number of American casualties in Iraq

In order for Israel to take out Iran, Assad has to fall first. If Israel attacks Iran and Iran responds, Syria would allow Iran access to its territory to shell Israel. Israel attack on Iran is 2-3 weeks away max. By then Assad will fall. Once Assad falls and Sunni's come to power they will obey the Saudis and stay out of the Iran - Israel conflict.

The only obstacle in Israel's path now is Russia.

I empathize with Israel because for them it is an existential issue. However Iran is the cradle of modern civilization and I would hate to see large scale collateral damage in Iran.
