The Statue of Unity is a proposed monument of Sardar Patel that will be created close to the Narmada Dam in Gujarat state of India.
Announced by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, it will be two times taller than New York's Statue of Liberty and almost five times that of Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer. Being one and a half times that of the Sardar Sarovar Dam itself, it would be the tallest in the world.
The statue will be placed at Sadhu Bet, an island located 3 km away from the Sardar Sarovar Dam in the riverbed of Narmada. Incidentally, the Statue of Liberty is 93 m tall.
The CM made this announcement on the eve of the beginning its his 10th year as the Gujarat chief minister. He referred to this ambitious structure as yet another gift to the country after projects like the Mahatma Mandir convention hall at Gandhinagar and memorial of Shyamji Krushna Varma at Mandvi, Kachchh.
Talking to the media at GLS auditorium, Law Garden at a press conference organized by the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, the CM explained the concept of the monument. He said every society has a history and great men who inspire new generations. Now, in the tradition of immortalizing the great men of Gujarat like Mahatma Mandir at Gandhinagar and the memorial of Shyamji Krushna Varma at Mandvi, Kachchh, "we will be building the Statue of Unity - the tallest memorial of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the world."
Explaining the details of the statue, Modi said, "It will be a unique memorial which will have a museum depicting the life of Sardar Patel, research centre for subjects like good governance and agriculture technology, which were close to Sardar's heart. The project will be developed with public participation through a registered society or trust under the chairmanship of the chief minister. "As the memorial will be the tallest in the world, we will be consulting and inviting experts from across the globe.
We will also be developing a dedicated website for the project, where everybody can make their suggestions for the rare project. Once the various technical studies like geographical survey and environmental study, project plan will be prepared. Once finished with these minutiae, it would be possible to complete the monument in 3 years. Presently, various experts and agencies are being searched."
The monument will have a lift and visitors can go to the top of the structure and have a panoramic view from Sardar Patel's eye.
According to Modi, the memorial will be a new chapter in the development of the tribal belt in the state, as it will open employment opportunities for the local tribal youth and boost tourism in the state.

Better than Mayawati garlanding statues of herself. :-/
I am all for monuments(not gay elephant parks and statues).
Here's something else...
A proposed Kolkata structure that could outshine Taj
Will try to find the picture too.
Lol....I have seen this project. Its a joke. Whats so special about this building. Its a residential building. How does it compete with the Taj? How could anyone think of comparing a residential building (which is not even that great) with one of the wonders of the world?
To be honest, I don't find the Taj all that attractive, this building might not be wonder material either but when(if) completed would be of more bring more architectural value than the Taj.
Will be the Tallest statue of the world !!
'Bhasmasur' Modi invites 'Jairamji' to 'Statue of Unity' function
PTI New Delhi, October 24, 2013 | UPDATED 13:43 IST
Narendra Modi has put his known detractor Jairam Ramesh in a quandary.
The Gujarat Chief Minister has invited the Union Minister for Rural Development to the groundbreaking ceremony of a giant statue of Sardar Patel called the 'Statue of Unity' on October 31.
Addressing the Congress leader as "My dear Jairamji", Modi, who has been often targeted by Ramesh and compared to self-destructive 'Bhasmasur' by him, said that project is mentored by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust and stressed that the the entity has been kept at "an arms' length from government".
"It is our belief that the monument will become an important cornerstone in the cultural and social life of our great nation, and hence we have kept this entity at an arms' length from government to enable co-option of eminent persons from all walks of life," Modi said in his letter to Ramesh.
He, however, also mentioned that he chairs the Trust, which is a Gujarat government entity, in an ex-officio capacity.
The BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate concluded the letter with his "warm personal regards".
Ramesh had once said that the Gujarat Chief Minister imposes an ideological and a managerial challenge to the Congress, remarks that were not liked by the AICC.
More recently, Ramesh had taunted Modi over his controversial remark of 'toilets first, temples later', saying that Centre had initiated programme of building lakhs of toilets "when some leaders had not attained enlightenment".
In the letter, Modi said that the 182 meter high statue of Sardar Patel, located in the middle of Narmada River, 3.5 km south of the Sardar Sarovar dam at Kevadia, Narmada district, would stand at twice that of 'Statue of Liberty' and with benchmarked standards that are superior to comparable structures in the world.

Guys it will turn into a great place of tourist attraction :thumb:
Sadly, no one is looking for the brighter side of this, Congress is grievously hurt and dying to claim Patel as just a Congressi.
