The 'Yal Devi' Train arrived in Jaffna today after a period of 24 years while President Mahinda Rajapaksa ceremonially declared open the Jaffna Railway Station.

Earlier, the President arrived at the Pallai Railway Station and climbed aboard the train which began the landmark journey. The four crossing stations between Palai and Jaffna located in Kodikamam, Chavakachcheri and Navatkuli were also opened by the President.

Yal Devi, which is currently running between Colombo and Palai, will be extended to Jaffna from today.

The Jaffna railway station features many modern facilities including novel communication electronic signal system.

Will anybody make a thread on magnificent luxury trains of India like the palace on wheels, deccan odyssey and the spectacular hotels like the lake palace hotel udaipur, rambagh palace jaipur, maurya sheraton delhi, oberoi grand kolkota, cecil hotel Simla, taj and oberoi mumbai, etc. where room stay costs anywhere from 200 dollars to 600 dollars a day.

Almost nobody is aware that india had spectacular magnificent hotels even in 1970s-80s in the days of very small socialist economy with very sluggish rate of growth. Just read on tripadvisor how sublimely foreign tourists praise India's grand and even budget hotels and Indian hospitality and the spectacular sights and colors of India and her culture.

please post pictures of the interiors of Indian hotels and your experience there. please someone make a thread on that as i am new here.

The project was funded by India. BTW the Chinese train running on Indian sponsored project gives the idea of Sri Lankan foreign policy also. That is SL benefits from the goodwill of both countries. :)

Are you sure this is Chinese train? Would it be possible to post some links confirming this.

Congrats to SL.

Hopefully they get more such travel routes and deep country wide train connectivity for all SL citizens to enjoy.

Yes we know that Chinese are involved in Sri Lankan railways.

Both the lines mentioned in the wiki article seems to be heading south and south west, was more interested to know if the Chinese engines are being used in northern Jaffna line?

I am just curious because IRCON is part of the manufacturing arm of indian railways. If they already have the ability to supply all the components, why would they allow Chinese to come into an Indian deal.

I dunno about how SLGR would use it's units on the Northern line. Maybe they will use a normal DMU loco and this S12 intercity unit. Anyway IRCON made a complaint about using Chinese DMU last time when the Kilinochchi portion opened. Maybe the row is now over.

Had been there in Lanka in around 2008, loved the place, nice people. i thought it was no different from Kerala here. i had come there for some assignment with loadstar, stayed in some resort near ekala. two things i remember the most.
one was that there were lot of snakes in the resort, they would just be going their way, they don't bother us we don't bother them.
second thing i remember the most was that at dinner i had ordered Non-veg set menu dinner for almost for a week and got bored eating non-veg daily. so on 6th day i ask for veg set menu immediately the waiter asks me you want it in "fish" or "chicken". Man you should see me laugh that night. to this day it is one of my best ice breakers at parties.:thumb:

Sri Lanka has been using Chinese made DMUs for a while.

If you look at this picture, you will see the derelict orange train to the left is a Korean made, ready to be decommissioned, old DMU, and the one to the right is a Chinese made brand new DMU.

I have not heard Sri Lanka complain about its Chinese made trains. Such complains always come from Pakistan. This tells me, Chinese trains are probably not to blame, but the people who are (mis/ab)using them.

Yes the orange one is the S8 class. I think it is made by Hyundai. I grew up with those sets. BTW it is stationed in the Negombo line. Which I used when I worked in Colombo. The blue color one is the Chinese S10. Apart from that we have two other Chinese DMUs namely S9 and S12.

Actually Chinese sets do pretty well in Sri Lanka. Those are very reliable DMUs. Nowadays they form the back bone of SLR fleet.
