During modern air combat, beside the pilot skill, the next important thing is the beyond visual range (BVR) capability of each fighter. This is determined by the avionics and medium range missile capability. F-22’s avionic is one generation more advanced than any Sukhoi family or whatever in Chinese inventory. However, the missiles are still quite comparable.

    AIM-120 AMRAAM
F-22 probably has a most advanced missile. Its AIM-120D AMRAAM has a range 95 km, combined with a sophisticated avionics, makes F-22 a most lethal fighter. Russia R-77 (AA-12) although has been claimed to posses better maneuverability and range (175 km), it does not have any combat experience yet. Also, the avionics systems on board Sukhoi and Mig jet fighters are less proven than their American counterpart. On the other hand, China recently produce it latest missile, the SD-10 that is used in its J-10 and J-11 fighters. It has a range of 80 km, making it is comparable to AIM-120C.

By judging from the specification, R-77 could be the best BVR missile in service today. It only need some combat experience to prove its capability. AIM-120C had been used effectively during Kosovo and Iraq Wars. Lastly, SD-10, although still inferior to both American dan Russian have, has shown a great potential of Chinese future military technology.

    also about the meteor.

METEOR offers a quantum leap in performance and will be the standard by which all other Air-to-Air missiles will be judged.

    Operational requirement
METEOR is a highly flexible, visual and beyond visual range, agile, air-to-air weapon system that provides a comprehensive operational capability in the most complex combat scenarios

    The MBDA solution
METEOR will engage air targets autonomously (whether fighters, bombers, transport aircraft, AWACS or cruise missiles) by using its active radar seeker by day or night and in all weather or dense electronic warfare environments.

METEOR is being developed by a winning European partnership comprising MBDA, INMIZE and Saab Bofors Dynamics. The programme is supported by Boeing.

METEOR’s ramjet propulsion system will ensure a range in excess of 100 km and a speed of more than Mach 4. Even when launched from extreme stand-off ranges, the missile will have the energy in the end game to defeat fast, manoeuvring targets. To ensure total target destruction, the missile is equipped with both proximity and impact fuzes and a fragmentation warhead that is detonated at the optimum point to maximise lethality.

The METEOR system will be compatible with Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen and with other advanced fighter aircraft such as JSF.

    Status of programme

METEOR was ordered by the UK MoD and five other European nations (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden) to meet their future Air-to-Air requirements.

The METEOR contract which involved agreement by all six partner nations, was signed in December 2002. This agreement covers a fixed price contract for the development of METEOR, with production requirements being met on a nation by nation basis.

A full development programme, agreed by all six nations, is already in place and includes the key project milestones that will measure both progress and success. Development will be completed by 2010 followed by the introduction into service on Typhoon, Rafale and Gripen

AWACS KILLER KS-172-RVV-L joint DRDO and NPO development

    KS-172 RVV-L

    purpose: super long range
    design bureau: Novator
    development: early 1997
    1st Air tests: in 1993
    length: 7.4 m
    diameter: 0.51
    wingspan: 0.75
    missile wt: 750 kg
    warhead wt: 50 kg
    envelope: 3 to 30000 m
    Range: about 400 km
    Guidance: Inertial + active radarhoming
    Carried by: Mig-31M; SU-35/37/S-37
    [crossreferences: used by ]

    # MIG-31 Foxhound Interceptor

    # SU-35 all-weather counter-air fighter

    # SU-37 multirole fighter

    # S32/37 Golden Eagle

    # MIG-39/1.42 MFI (plasma stealth)

The KS-172 may have been based on the airframe of the 9K37M1 Buk-M surface-to-air missile. It used a two-stage rocket engine with a flight speed of about Mach 4 and a claimed maximum range of 400 km (250 mi). The AAM-L flies to the vicinity of the target by inertial navigation, then activates its own active radar for terminal homing.

The AAM-L missile is intended for use against Airborne Early Warning, tanker, and maritime patrol aircraft, giving an air force the ability to attack these vital assets without having to engage their fighter escorts. Enhanced-range versions have also been suggested as possible anti-satellite weapons.

India Starts Defence Exports : Joint Ventures Now yielding rich Dividends

    KS -172

    - Joint Venture between India's DRDO and Russias NPO Novator.

    SpeciFications :

    - It is an ultra Long Range AAM with a Development Range of 400KMs To Target AEW/AWAC Type High Value Aircrafts.

    - Sole Carrier in the Indian AF will be the Su-30MKI

    Features ( Dimensions) :

    - 1.4 Meter long Rocket Booster

    - Weight 748Kgs

    - Core Diameter 0.40 Meter , Total Lenght 6.01 Meters , Span .61 Meters

    - Launched by a Solid-propellant Tandem Rocket Booster

    - The KS 172 will attack its Targets with an adaptive high explosive ( HE) fragmentation warhead.

    Guidance

    - Secure Data-Linked Based inertial Navigation System for MidCourse Guidance ( This would probably be done by AWACS or the 2-3 MKIs Working in Tandem with their Mini AWACS Capability)

    - Active Radar Homing for its Terminal Phase.

-The missile will be used against air targets flying at altitudes from 3m to 30km with speeds up to 4,000km/h and manoeuvring at up to 12g.

    INDO-RUSSO CO-OPERATION

DRDO and NPO will jointly Develop:

    - An Active Homing Radar Seeker with a Wide Lock-On Range Which is able to recieve targeting data from the launch AC.

    - Design a combined Gas/AeroDynamic Control system with 3d TVC . Provides High Manoeuvrability irrespective of launch Conditions and allows for missle launch with AC in super Manoeuvrability flight mode.

    - Create and Adaptive Rapid Reaction Autopilot Which Optimises with Missile Stabilization and control Parameters within the firing range.

    - Development of Special Interaction Logic btween the KS-172 Explosive Fuse and Guidance system Which ( In addition to structural and config features) gurantees absolute immunity of the Warhead detonation system to Jamming

brahmos corporation can make all the missile including PJ10 (brhamos) missile, they can make AWAC killer and long range next generation sam.

What is the point of having brahmos making just the pj10 (brahmos missile only) they have to expand its mandate to include other missiles.

Good point. And since MTCR will not be applicable here, there will not be any restriction on the level of cooperation or technology transfer, so this would also help our defence establishment in a big way.
