Re: India must prepare for war with Pakistan and China - Carnegie Endowment

Nothing wrong in what Carnegie has come up with. India is preparing for a two front war. It's sad that we don't make our own weapons. Imported or indigenous we have to arm ourselves to face te twin challenge.

Preparing for war is the task for any military.

Nothing new in that.

Preparing for war, does not mean going to war.

The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.
George S. Patton

If we do not prepare for war and instead make coffee machines, we will have another 1962.

However, alarmist pronouncements should be read, digested and then deciding your own path.

Re: IAF in the Kargil War

In fact IAF did an excellent job in the Kargil war

Before kargil IAF had never practiced any high altitude bombing

Therefore on the hardware side IAF had to re wire its Mirage 2000s and
and the pilots had to practice such High altitude bombing before the actual missions

A moot point as far as the Army is concerned.

Re: IAF in the Kargil War

Kargil war secret: IAF used 'jugaad'

http://www.hindustantimes.com/world...r-secret-IAF-used-jugaad/Article1-933788.aspx

The Indian Air Force's best kept secret is out: Its stellar role in the Kargil victory 13 years ago had as much to do with its pilots and planes as that great Indian trick, jugaad.

Pilots flew real-time missions with hand-held GPS sets to home in on high-altitude targets,
usually tiny contingents of Pakistanis occupying Indian positions. And its aces used hand-held video cameras to record bombing runs for post-op analysis back at the base.

The IAF's "innovative use of airpower (was) one of the excellent features of the Kargil operations", says a new study of the war by Benjamin Lambeth, an airpower historian, released on Thursday.

"A senior officer told me there was a word for these innovations - jugaad," said Lambeth.

The challenge for the IAF in Kargil was unprecedented. No air force had ever been tasked to bomb targets at elevations of 14,000 to 18,000 ft, against a backdrop that made spotting impossible. To top it, there were instructions to not cross the LoC.

A serving IAF pilot, who did not want to be identified, said, "We did use hand-held commercial GPS units, except they were not really hand-held"¦They were fixed in front, in a bracket."

So, what other jugaad did the IAF do?

Shooting up an avalanche, says Lambeth.

Pilots knew if you couldn't bomb dispersed enemy soldiers, you could hit them with something they least expected: shooting on a mountain side triggered an avalanche. Snow came tumbling down, in a rushing sweep.

There is more. Kargil was just the start. Or was it?

We should train our men , machine and ammo heavily on high altitude warfare.
Putting Pakistan out of the picture for a while; there's the Himalayas from Kashmir to Arunachal and then there's China behind the Himalayas.
Our combat planes, choppers, ammo - everything should be optimally chosen or manufactured keeping in mind this potential of high-altitude mountain warfare.
With China, it won't be a small scale business that we can get past by some "jugaad".
I read about the thin air drag taking out our ammo accuracy. There's definitely homework to do.

The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.

Patton's quotes are famous Sir.
Sadly our Pakistani friends ruined his name in 1971 :p

Re: IAF in the Kargil War

what was the role of newly obtained su-30 at that time.??

Did IAF ever used them in kargil??/
Su-30 did not have any role in that war...they were newly acquired birds and were not armed. Pilots were also not trained who could fly them in the area like Kargil. Only M2K, MIG-29, MIG-27 and 21's were used. I think Jaguar was also tried.

I have full confidence in IAF now..

But i am not convinced about Air-defense capability of Air-force to defend its own assets, Presently its Army which provide Air-deface to Air-force airbases, In War times resources get thin and Army have its own assets to protect..

IAF must have its own Ground based Air-defense assets, Making of Air-force SF is good move..

Recently in Afghanistan a group of suicide bombers blew up the perimeter wall and entered the airbase
and destroyed several US planes

Can IAF SF Garuds prevent such attacks

The attack on US base is extremely sophisticated, Now after this attack other have opportunity to study it & make counter defense against such attacks..

Air-force SF guards are very well equipped, I should say they should be given light Armored vehicles for protecting Airbases..I believe they can..
