Srinagar, January 4, 1990. Aftab, a local Urdu newspaper, publishes a press release issued by Hizb-ul Mujahideen set up by the Jamaat-e-Islami in 1989 to wage jihad for Jammu and Kashmir's secession from India and accession to Pakistan, asking all Hindus to pack up and leave. Another local paper, Al Safa, repeats this expulsion order.

In the following days, there is near chaos in the Kashmir valley with Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and his National Conference government abdicating all responsibilities of the State. Masked men run amok, waving Kalashnikovs, shooting to kill and shouting anti-India slogans.

Reports of killing of Hindus, invariably Kashmiri Pandits, begin to trickle in; there are explosions; inflammatory speeches are made from the pulpits of mosques, using public address systems meant for calling the faithful to prayers. A terrifying fear psychosis begins to take grip of Kashmiri Pandits.

Walls are plastered with posters and handbills, summarily ordering all Kashmiris to strictly follow the Islamic dress code, prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks and imposing a ban on video parlours and cinemas. The masked men with Kalashnikovs force people to re-set their watches and clocks to Pakistan Standard Time.

Shops, business establishments and homes of Kashmiri Pandits, the original inhabitants of the Kashmir valley with a recorded cultural and civilisational history dating back 5,000 years, are marked out. Notices are pasted on doors of Pandit houses, peremptorily asking the occupants to leave Kashmir within 24 hours or face death and worse. Some are more lucid: "Be one with us, run, or die!"

    * * *

Srinagar January 19, 1990. Jagmohan arrives to take charge as governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah, whose pathetic, whimpering, snivelling government has all but ceased to exist and has gone into hiding, resigns and goes into a sulk. Curfew is imposed as a first measure to restore some semblance of law and order. But it fails to have a deterrent effect.

Throughout the day, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists use public address systems at mosques to exhort people to defy curfew and take to the streets. Masked men, firing from their Kalashnikovs, march up and down, terrorising cowering Pandits who, by then, have locked themselves in their homes.

As evening falls, the exhortations become louder and shriller. Three taped slogans are repeatedly played the whole night from mosques: 'Kashmir mei agar rehna hai, Allah-O-Akbar kehna hai' (If you want to stay in Kashmir, you have to say Allah-O-Akbar); 'Yahan kya chalega, Nizam-e-Mustafa' (What do we want here? Rule of Shariah); 'Asi gachchi Pakistan, Batao roas te Batanev san' (We want Pakistan along with Hindu women but without their men).

In the preceding months, 300 Hindu men and women, nearly all of them Kashmiri Pandits, had been slaughtered ever since the brutal murder of Pandit Tika Lal Taploo, noted lawyer and BJP national executive member, by the JKLF in Srinagar on September 14, 1989. Soon after that, Justice N K Ganju of the Srinagar high court was shot dead. Pandit Sarwanand Premi, 80-year-old poet, and his son were kidnapped, tortured, their eyes gouged out, and hanged to death. A Kashmiri Pandit nurse working at the Soura Medical College Hospital in Srinagar was gang-raped and then beaten to death. Another woman was abducted, raped and sliced into bits and pieces at a sawmill.

In villages and towns across the Kashmir valley, terrorist hit lists have been floating about. All the names are of Kashmiri Pandits. With no government worth its name, the administration having collapsed and disappeared, the police nowhere to be seen, despondency sets in. As the night of January 19, 1990, wears itself out, despondency gives way to desperation.

And tens of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits across the valley take a painful decision: to flee their homeland to save their lives from rabid jihadis. Thus takes place a 20th century Exodus.

    * * *

Srinagar, January 19, 2005. There are no Kashmiri Pandits in Srinagar, or, for that matter, anywhere else in the Kashmir valley; they don't live here anymore. You can find them in squalid refugee camps in Jammu and Delhi [ Images ]. As many as 300,000 Kashmiri Pandits have fled their home and hearth and been reduced to living the lives of refugees in their own country.

Two-thirds of them are camping in Jammu. The rest are in Delhi and in other Indian cities. Many of them, once prosperous and proud of their rich heritage, now live in grovelling poverty, dependent on government dole and charity. In these 15 years, an entire generation of exiled Kashmiri Pandits has grown up, without seeing the land from where their parents fled to escape the brutalities of Islamic terrorism, a land they dare not return to, although that land still remains a part of their country.

A large number of them are suffering from a variety of stress and depression related diseases. A group of doctors who surveyed the mental and physical health of the Kashmiri Pandits living in refugee camps, found high incidence of 'economic distress, stress induced diabetes, partial lunacy, hypertension and mental retardation.' Statistics reflect high death rate and low birth rate among the Kashmiri Pandit refugees.

And thereby hangs a tragic tale that has been all but wiped out from public memory.

An entire people have been uprooted from the land of their ancestors and left to fend for themselves as a weak-kneed Indian state shamelessly panders to Islamic terrorists and separatists who claim they are the final arbiters of Jammu and Kashmir's destiny. A part of India's cultural heritage has been destroyed; a chapter of India's civilisational history has been erased.

Had this tragedy occurred elsewhere in Hindu majority India, and had the victims been Muslims, we would have described it as 'ethnic cleansing' and 'genocide.' We would have made films with horror-inducing titles. We would have filed cases in the Supreme Court of India. Our media would have marshalled remarkable rage in reporting the smallest detail.

But, this tragedy has occurred in Muslim majority Kashmir valley, and the victims are all Hindus, that too Pandits. What has been lost is part of India's Hindu culture, what has been erased is integral to India's Hindu civilisation.

Therefore, the government makes bold to record that the Kashmiri Pandits have "migrated on their own" and their 'displacement (is) self-imposed;' the National Human Rights Commission, after a perfunctory inquiry, refuses to concede that what has happened is 'genocide' or 'ethnic cleansing,' though facts add up to no less than that, never mind that 300,000 lives have been destroyed.

And, our jhola-wallah brigade of secular activists rudely turn up their noses to the plight of Kashmiri Pandits: Hindu sorrow, inflicted by Islamic terror, stinks.

Today, on January 19, the 15th anniversary of the forced flight of Kashmiri Pandits, look back at India's wretched history of secular politics and consider the terrible price the nation has paid at the altar of appeasement because the Indian State has, and continues to, toe the line of least resistance.

Indeed, this is an unfortunate episode in India's secular history and intent.

Islam is more than the acts of these maniacs. Islam needs to be saved from these thugs who are using religion for territorial or political gains.

What you saying is correct but it's not due to Islam but due to radical Muslims which get support from Wahhabis or Hezbollah and 1,000 other such Islamic group. They are real culprits who brain-wash innocent and secular voices. There are many secular Muslims too but their voice is timid.

Whenever Muslims are in minority, they ask for secularism and when they become majority - They ask for Islamic law & ethnic cleansing starts till Muslims reaches 95%++. But this is not because of common Muslims, but mainly because of Mullahs and Political leaders. Unfortunately, Muslims lacks liberal and secular leaders.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Kutch to Kohima, the 4 cardinal directions of a civilization called Bharat. Without Kashmir there cannot be a Bharat.

Let Kashmiri Muslims play in hand of Jihadi and Paki due to Muslim brotherhood, but Kashmir was, is and will be part of India. Things will change, be optimistic. What they will reap, will sew. karma has way of catching it. See, Pak is in very bad phase, BD is like Slum desh. Land of pure become center of Islamic terrorism in 64 years. Bangladeshi are working as maid and Rickshaw driver in India. Hahhaha.

Well, I have my own self-defined limitation on DFI. So, I can't say everything.

As per 4% reservation. It's vote bank politics. I don't have any reservation nor i was born in rich family. I did as per my own ability, So Muslims also deserve the same. IMHO, Only SC and ST needs reservation not because of education/employee but because they had faced social discrimination for thousand of years. They deserve the reservation. MBC also faced lots of issue in past. They didn't went away but remained in the country to make it better.

Muslims do need better education. But whom to blame ?? I will blame to their authority only. 50,000 Madrasas and no. are rising. They themselves prefer studying in Gov. and Madrassas even when they can afford. Also, One need to know that, Most of the educated and elite Muslim class went to Pak/BD in 40's during partition. What was left had majority of poor. So, They had inherit problem. Still, Literacy rate among Muslims is not that bad. Difference is only few percentage. In Kerala, literacy rate among Muslims are 95%, Still T.F.R. is 50% Higher than Non-Muslims. According to me, Only SC, ST and MBC needs reservation and rest don't need it. It's just Muslim appeasement card, that Congress & regional parties are playing due to electoral gain.

'Fatwa' announced against Christian schools in Kashmir, 3 priests asked to leave valley
    M Saleem Pandit, TNN | Jan 19, 2012, 08.20PM IST
SRINAGAR: A self-styled sharia court of Kashmir on Thursday issued fatwa asking three Christian priests to leave the state for "luring the valley Muslims to Christianity". The court also directed Jammu and Kashmir government to take over the management of the Christian missionary schools, besides monitoring their activities in future.

Last summer, a controversy arose over the conversion of some Muslim youths to Christianity after they were allegedly lured by the pastor M C Khanna of All Saints Church in Srinagar. The video clips were distributed across the valley, showing conversion of local youth to Christianity, which made the Mufti Azam of Kashmir, Mufti Bashir-ud-Din, to summon the pastor for explanation. Mufti Bashir runs a sharia court in the valley and is promptly known for announcing appearance of moon on the occasion of Eids in Kashmir.

According to Nasir-ul-Islam, a deputy of grand Mufti Bashir-ud-din, four Christian priests were involved in alluring the Muslim youth in Kashmir to Christianity. An investigation against the principal of the local Christian missionary school Parvez Sameul Koul is going on.

The Naib (deputy) Mufti Nasir said: Punjabi M C Khanna, Dutch national, Jim Borst, and Gayoor Messah were directed to leave the valley forthwith for their involvement in the conversions in the valley. "However, the case against the principal of Tyndale Biscoe school Parvez Sameul Koul is under investigation and judgment will be announced in due course of time," Naib Mufti said.

The Christian pastors have already migrated from Kashmir valley soon after C M Khanna was released on bail on December 1, 2011 after Jammu and Kashmir police arrested him on November 19,2011 on charges of fomenting communal trouble in the state.

Besides, the decree of the sharia court said that Jammu and Kashmir government should involve itself in the management of the missionary schools and renowned Kashmiri educationists should form the part of the management.

The sharia court even directed the school management to allot a class for Islamia studies as well for the students of other faiths. "Given the Muslim majority character of the valley, the Muslim students should be taught Islam and daily prayer written by Syed Mohammad Iqbal should also be sung in the morning prayers," Naib Mufti Nasir said.

All India Christian Council at in New Delhi on January 13, 2012 had expressed its apprehensions that the community members may face backlash by the verdict of the self-styled Srinagar's Islami shariat court against Christian pastors Jim Borst, C M Khanna and Gayoor Messah for their alleged involvement in luring the people to convert to their religion across Kashmir valley.

The Deputy Mufti,Azam Nasir-ul-Islam, and son of grand Mufti Bashir-ud-din, Mufti Muhammad Nasir-ul-Islam, in a statement on January 11, 2012, had said that it was proved beyond doubt that the accused pastor Khanna, who is putting up in Kashmir for past many years, was along with other accomplices luring Muslim people to change religion.

Dr John Dayal, the spokesman of the Indian Christians, has rejected that that any conversion took place by force.

"A fact finding team which went to Srinagar in the wake of the arrest of Rev Khanna, and interviewed Church personnel, Ulema, school authorities and the police, found no evidence of force or fraud in baptisms that have been carried out over a period of time. Each baptism has been proved to be voluntary," John Dayal said.

The only solution of Kashmir is to rehabilitate Millions of Kashmiri pundits, allow Dogras & other people from Indian religion to settle there under heavy security. Once, Demographic will change. Things will improve. Gov. need to abolish article 365 too. Also, we need to claim our P.O.K. in aggressive way. Congress is against article 365 and BJP don't have enough support. More i think, More i feel there is no other option. There is no point wasting time. Those kashmiris will continue to support their "Muslim brotherhood" and reject any positive support from GoI which is termed as Kafirs. Those who have problem, should be deported to Pak.

    Agreed

    Agreed.

    Agreed

Congress wont do it and neither would bjp....support is irrelevent.

Not all kashmiri muslims want to merge with pakistan. Let us be very clear on that. And there is no such thing as muslim brotherhood...it only exists on paper. If it were the entire middle east would be 1 country instead of being at each others throats and pakistan wouldn't be selling east turkmenistan separatis to china. Either there is muslim brotherhood or there isn't...there is no middle path.

No, BJP want it. I am quite sure on that. To pass that bill, BJP needs 2/3rd support in Parliament which they didn't had nor it looks they will get in near future. Few of the BJP allies might not agree too. It's BJP core demand but it's only BJP with no support from most of the parties. That's why they don't make statement on that. It's political compulsion.

There is nothing called ALL, it's all either majority or minority. What does it matter if 100 thousand Muslims of Kargil want to remain with India ? What really matter is what 5 Millions Muslims of Valley thinks.

Well, Unfortunately Muslim brotherhood do exist. If that won't be true, Then why there is problem in Kashmir ? Why Khalistan issue died ? why there is no problem in 28 states. Well, Pakistan helped China to destroy the insurgency in Xinjiang. This is latest news. Pak needs China , that's why.

Why there will be Muslim brotherhood in Turkey and Iran when 98% population are Muslims ?? Muslim Brotherhood doesn't exit when Muslims are majority, It only happens when they are minority. May be, Islam unites them to fight against Kafirs....Like Kashmir, Israel, Checneya, Xinjiang.

Your support for bjp has blurred your vision. bjp would have made loc as international border when musshy came to India. Good thing it never transpired. Even during kargil bjp ordered army not to cross loc...so that shows there stance.

khalistan died because govt came down with iron hand...the same has not happened in kashmir.

as a matter of fact the underlying reason of kashmir, israel, chechneya, xinjiang is politics/power and religion is the tool to make the people fight by making them believe it is religious fight. why was there no terrorism in kashmir in the 40's, 50's, 60's etc why did it start afterwards when pakis understood they cant win in conventional fight so they started terrorism ? majority of terrorists even now in kashmir are paki origin.

why should 100 thousand kagril muslims be called traitors when you say yourself they want to remain with India ? blanket statements never do good.

No, It was not possible. Mushy was not ready. He didn't signed the deal in Agra. Don't say as per your own assumption and rumor.

Our Defense was pathetic at that time. I also heard that ABV didn't gave permission to cross border. Don't know why. Anyway, That is off-topic. We will discuss in some other thread. This topic is related with Ethnic cleansing in kashmir.

Why not happened in Kashmir like Punjab ?? It's lack of intention and may be Muslim vote bank.

So, Muslims sold their soul, patriotism, integrity against the nation where they lived just because of an neighbour Islamic nation says them to do so ?? It's real shame. Majority of Muslims makes difference. It doesn't matter what few % thinks.

Let us not get into the Western right-wing narrative of outright Islam bashing. In India, with all our history of communal strife, we have been nuanced enough not to get into bashing of Islam as a religion. That suits ignorant neo-Western writers who spread anti-Muslim and anti-Islam rhetoric as though they are "experts".

Islam has existed in Kashmir for decades, and there was never a problem till the 1990s. The real problem is the Saudi-funded Wahhabi poison, spread through the Pakis and other spearheads of violent Jihad. This neo-Jihadi movement, fighting in the name of religion, brainwashing youth to blow themselves up in the "name of Allah" etc. is a relatively recent phenomenon in India. We can thank the Pakis for that.

Allright...but you only brought up the topic.

Blame the govt instead of avg muslim who has nothing to do with terrorism.

why did sikhs do it in punjab ? pakistan was not even sikh country ? it is no secret that false propaganda can cause tentions among communities in India. pakis used religion to cross there terrorists into Indian side and attract few from here also. Majority of kashmiris were never part of terrorism against India. It was always a combination of paki infiltrated terrorists and few from this side to give shelter and take part in the fight.

Kashmir solution is easy...you have already listed few points that i have agreed.

First of all, we are talking only about Kashmir and it's demography. Why not blame average Muslims of Kashmir who sold their soul just because of support for Pak. If Pak was successful in that, That means they will be successful in future too. Think with open mind.

If majority of Muslims of Kashmir will reject Pak, Then there won't be any problem today. Of course, Pak is behind all that. But who are supporting Pak ?? Common Muslims of Kashmir. Let's not hide the truth.

Pakistan will fail miserably in terrorism in India, if they don't get any support. I am afraid you are not aware of situation in Kashmir valley, Majority of them are with terrorism against India.

    Yes....
