The Culture, Traditions, Rituals and Festivals- and People of India!

This is a thread dedicated exclusively to India's many myriad cultures, religions, festivals and rituals.

I'll start off with what I have a bias for- my own state Maharashtra :happy_2:

This is a tradition called the Shivgarzana: a tradition that involves the beating of dhols into a frenzy at either one of two festivals: Gokulashtami or Ashtama Rohini, celebrating the birth of Krishna, an avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu; or Ganesh Visarjan, the festival of the Immersion of Lord Ganesha, widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

Here's one from Pune from the Shivgarzana mirvnuk (procession):

Make sure to turn your volume up and enjoy the beats.

This is from the Aurang'abaad mirvnuk:

This is from good ol' Mumbai:

This is from a tradition called Dhwaj <flag> also performed at the Shivgarjana mirvnuk:

And this is from a tradition called dahi handi, also celebrating a part of the Gokulashtami festivities, in which a group of youth forming a human pyramid tries to break a handi, or clay pot positioned at a convenient height atop the pyramid prior with a blunt object. The clay pot is filled with buttermilk, which symbolises the playful, human nature of the child god and the achievement of the group with unity:

And watch out for the gopikas, who're also also claiming their share!

And when the bough breaks the cradle does fall:

And the man, the legend who is our pride- in animated form :emot151::
