Iran Aid Ship Docks In Djibouti, Averting Showdown With U.S., Saudis

An Iranian aid ship docked in Djibouti May 22, averting a showdown with Saudi Arabian and U.S. forces over its original plans to deliver the aid directly to a port in Yemen.

The ship's arrival was announced by Iran's semi-official Fars news agency and Press TV. It was confirmed by officials of the UN World Food Program, who agreed to move the ship's cargo to war-torn Yemen on Iran's behalf.

Tehran agreed this week to let the UN inspect the vessel, the Iran Shahed, in a move which also averted a conflict with Saudi-led forces which have been searching all ships entering Yemeni ports to stop arms from reaching Huthi rebels.

But a Financial Times report May 22 raised questions about Iran's shipping activities. It found that at least four large cargo ships made a "series of highly unusual and undeclared trips between Iran and Yemeni ports controlled by the Huthis in the first few months of the year," based on a search maritime records.

While it is not known what cargo the Iranian ships were carrying, they "changed their ensigns, turned off their tracking devices at key points during their voyages, registered false information in international shipping logs, and met unidentified craft mid-ocean," the newspaper reported.

The mysterious shipping activity occurred just when the Huthi rebellion broke out in Yemen. The rebels since then have dislodged the government and taken over large swaths of the country, including the capital Sanaa and biggest port, Aden.

The highly secretive and irregular shipping activity highlights why the United States and Saudi Arabia have been wary of Iran's intentions, with the United States assigning warships to shadow the latest Iranian cargo ship for days.

The pattern of Iran's shipments to Yemen has been "neither logical or economic," Ami Daniel, chief executive of the Windward maritime intelligence service, told the Times.

"It indicates that there is a sovereign, not a commercial interest at stake."

Into The Cauldron - Saudi And UAE Troops Invade Yemen

While many "western" media missed it, we reported that one brigade of regular United Arab Emirate troops invaded Yemen through the port of Aden. Videos from Yemen show large columns of French build Leclerc tanks and other modern UAE equipment. The Saudi and UAE spokesperson declared that they only brought equipment for Yemenis but that can not be true. The tanks will certainly be operated by people with the necessary extensive training on these expensive high tech vehicles, not with fresh off the street recruits with a few weeks of basic training.

After taking Aden the UAE military, some Yemeni infantry forces trained over the last months outside the country and some local southern separatist groups moved north and attacked the Al Anad airbase held by the Houthi militia and parts of the Yemeni army loyal to former president Saleh. After only a few short skirmishes the Houthi retreated and the UAE troops moved into the base. They then moved further north towards Taiz.

But the UAE military is not the only force invading Yemen.

With again few mentions in the media a Saudi brigade invaded Yemen from the north and moved from Sharoah in Saudi Arabia to AlAbr District and from there west towards Marib:

"Dozens of tanks, armoured vehicles and personnel carriers, as well as hundreds of Yemeni soldiers trained in Saudi Arabia, arrived in Yemen overnight" via the Wadia border post in the north of the country, a Yemeni military source told AFP.
I guestimate that the Saudi unit is likely to be about the same size as the UAE one. Each has about one regular mechanized brigade of some 3,000 to 4,000 troops with several battalions of freshly trained Yemeni infantry troops and local mercenaries attached to it.

The strategic target of this two-pronged attack is the capitol Sanaa currently held by the Houthi. They are to be pushed back north into their home province Sadah.

For the invading force the easy part is over. This will now be literally an uphill battle. The capitol and the approaches the Saudi and UAE military will have to take are mountainous. The roads there are easy to block and in such confined space, as the Israelis learned in Lebanon 2006, huge main battle tanks are simply sitting ducks to be killed by small anti-tank teams.

There is also an unknown factor in the form of AlQaeda in the Arab Peninsula which rules disguised as "Sons of Hadramaut" that eastern province and the harbor city Mukalla. AQAP just expressed its comfort with Yemeni culture and religion by blowing up a 700 year old mosque in the area.

Some months ago AQAP received weapons from Saudi Arabia to hold up the Houthis but its loyalty towards the Saudis and UAE is very dubious. There are confirmed reports that AQAP has taken over some towns near to Aden and now rumors that AQAP has a presence in Aden and wants to take that big harbor city. Will the UAE troops be comfortable with an uncontrollable AQAP sitting right on their main supply line?

The Wadia border station the Saudis used to cross into Yemen is also not safe. About a year ago two Saudi soldiers were killed there when some AQAP types attacked from Yemen.

There are also Islamic State forces in Yemen and an ISIS aligned group in Saudi Arabia took credit for yesterday's suicide bombing which killed some 17 Saudi security personal in Abha near the border with Yemen.

The troops invading Yemen will not only have to watch out for Houthi traps and ambushes when they move up into the mountains towards Sanaa. They will also have to intensively watch their backs. Has the "young general", as the Saudi Minister of Defense is mocked now, any idea of the cauldron his troops are getting into?

It 's really a shame

It's scary that a 30 yr old ATGM can easily destroy one of the best MBT in the world.

Let's compare it with most recent russian anti tank missile :

The Konkurs warhead penetration is 750–800 mm VS ancient  Rolled homogeneous armour while the kornet penetration after Explosive reactive armour is 1300 mm

Complete Battle Map of Yemen: Yemeni Army Advances in the Saudi Jizan Region
The Yemeni army and the Popular Committees announced on Tuesday their control over the Saudi military post of Ka’b al-Jaberi and the town of Mohannad in the border area of Jizan, leaving several Saudi soldiers killed and wounded.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

The top and sides of an MBT are not as well protected as the front.

The Javelin exploits this weakness with the high arc. Of course with the older ATGM, you can guide them to the top.

Your typical ATGM will slice through top armor like a hot knife through butter. But it will not cross the front armour most of the time.

Fortunately or unfortunately, penetration is not sufficient for destruction, if the tank has Protected ammunition storage with blow off panels, it is often hard to trigger explosions.

And small fires are automatically extinguished by inbuilt fire-control systems.

Either they pounded those saudi tanks till they went up or they were exceedingly lucky :blah:

Let's hope every single tank of the retarded theocracy of al-Saud is fried.
They will replace them without any problem. The suppliers have the market locked up for themselves. It is the stupidity of political and religious who are responsible for this mess. I do not see an end in the near future. It has been 14 years and will continue for another 14 years unless the nations come to table for peace talks with ceasefire in place during talks.

More fighting in Yemen against al-Saud regime forces:

It is going to get bigger headache for the KSA and will spread into other territories where Shia's are being oppressed and ruled by minority Sunni rulers. How will Putin react once he gets conclusive evidence on bombers of their airliner and nations who were catalyst behind downing of Russian SU-24? Saudi rulers will try to silence 45% of Shia's by using force and will eventually fail.

What if Iran joins the fight by sending their troops to Yemen's aid?

The law of "Karma" will decide the future of KSA between May 2016 and 2019. Their allies will have to increase airport security going forward due to the fact they are busy constructing high rise buildings in an geographic area which has high concentration of fanatics.

I don't think the the export versions of the M1A2 come with DU applique armor so the M1s wielded by the Americans might put up a better showing but this is still embarrassing.

Bunch of rebels with ATGMs putting M1s out of order, I remember Americans saying that the Arabs overload the tanks with ammunition, and whatever doesn't fit into the protected storage is just kept in the tank without protection,
Might be what caused the kill, might not.

But this proves 2 things, can't win a fight just with state of the art toys and that the Saudis can't fight for sh*t

Not so. The top is more or less a non-factor when hit by modern ATGMs. Penetration is definite, and the equipment on the top will get damaged but explosion is another factor.

True. Hard to cause an ammunition explosion unless the rounds are inside the turret instead of the storage with the blow-off panels.

Then, there ARE ridiculous incidents like M1s surviving 20+ RPGs after getting ambushed. And a T-80 in Chechnya took 29 RPGs IIRC and made it back to base.

Modern tanks don't just go poof when hit, regardless of origin. Which is why I'm a bit suspicious. I'll have to check out the international forum that is dedicated to this sort of discussion.

Saudi Arabia has hired hundreds of former special forces to fight the Yemeni Forces.
The first group of just under 100 Colombian troops arrived in Yemen earlier Oct/2015.
The troops were set to arrive in the southern port city of Aden.
