Pakistan Taliban fighters attack air base near Peshawar
An air force camp near the Pakistan city of Peshawar has come under attack by between seven and ten fighters, a military spokesman has said.


Sources said the attack centred on a residential area of Badaber camp where high ranking officers were stationed who were probably the target of the assault.

Six fighters and two security personnel were reported to have been killed in the fighting.

The armed group Tehreek-e-Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heavy contingent of the Quick Reaction Force has reached the spot and exchanges of fire with the fighters are ongoing.

"As per initial information, seven to 10 terrorists tried to break deep in the base" but troops managed to contain them, military spokeman Major General Asim Bajwa said in a tweet.

The area has been sealed by security forces.

Peshawar suffered the worst attack in Pakistani history in December when Taliban gunmen killed more than 150 people at an army-run school, most of them children.

Militants in northwestern Pakistan attacked an air force base on the outskirts of Peshawar early Friday, triggering a shootout that left at least six of the attackers dead, the army said.

The assault on the Badaber air base came as the army has been carrying out a major military operation against local and foreign militants in North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Six of the attackers were killed and two soldiers wounded in the attack, army spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa said. He said the attackers stormed the guard room of the base, but the attack was quickly repulsed. Security forces were engaged in clearing up operations and were searching for militants who might be hiding in the area, he said.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, Mohamad Khurasani, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement released to the media, he said they would provide details about the attackers shortly.

The Badaber air base, located on the edge of Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was not functional and it was mostly being used as a residential place for the employees and officers of the air force. The base was established in 1960s.

What is funny is that current climate in Pakistan as reported over there tries to put it in the same bracket as India when it comes to terrorism, which is by repeatedly trying to portray Pak as a victim of terrorism just like India.

Once upon a time, that same Pak had a doctrine of bleeding India through thousand cuts using "non state actors". (They still follow that but are lot more busy putting out fires in their land now).

Those in India during 1980s and early 1990s would be knowing how dangerous it was when insurgency was at it's peak and our treacherous neighbour back then was sparing no effort to disintegrate India by all means covert and overt when we were at the lowest in terms of economy as well as development.

To now feel sympathy for the same neighbour is downright absurd.
