Temple dispute: MIM to withdraw support to AP govt

The controversy over the extension of the disputed temple adjacent to historic monument of Charminar was now threatening to snowball in to a major political crisis in Andhra Pradesh. Angered over the alleged pro-Hindutva attitude of the state government and the police, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has threatened to withdraw the support from the Kiran Kumar Reddy government.

As the Congress government in the state is surviving on a razor thin majority in the 294 member assembly, withdrawal of support by seven MLAs of Majlis can sound a death knell for the government.

The party was infuriated over the arrest of seven of its MLAs and one MLC by the police when they staged a protest against the extension of the disputed structure at Charminar on Sunday morning. The police also got the mobile connections of the MLAs including the floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi.

MIM President and Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi [ Images ] told a media conference in Hyderabad that party's executive will meet at 11 am on Monday to discuss the question of withdrawing the support from the state Congress government and Manmohan Singh [ Images ] led government at the centre.

"By permitting the construction of another structure over the temple, Congress has revived the memories of 6 December 1992. This has exposed the communal face of Congress and Kiran Kumar Reddy government. We had already repeatedly warned the chief minister that there was a limit four our patience but he did not take it seriously," he said.

The seven MLAs and one MLC were later released by the police in the evening but the damage seems to have been done and the MIM said that it had taken a serious note of the objectionable role played by the police and the government on the issue of "illegal temple" over the last fortnight.

He said that that the government used the police to allow the illegal construction work at Charminar in open violation of the orders of AP high court. "On minorities day Kiran Kumar Reddy has given Muslim minority the gift of his communal mind set," Owaisi said.

He said that the act of the state government and the police had created unrest and disquiet among the Muslims in Andhra Pradesh. But he urged them to maintain peace and wait for the future course of action his party will announce.

A curfew like situation was prevailing in the old city of Hyderabad where all the roads leading towards Charminar were sealed off with barbed wires by the police to prevent any protest demonstration by the Muslims.

All the vehicles were diverted and shops were closed and the entire area was surrounded by hundreds of armed policemen. When the MIM MLAs tried to protest, they were taken into custody. They included Akbaruddin Owaisi, Ahmad Pasha Quadri, Virasat Rasool Khan, Mumtaz Ahmad Kham, Afsar Khan, Moazzam Khan and Ahmad Balala and MLC Altaf Razvi.

The work of laying a tarpaulin shed was taken up on a day when Hindu organisations including Bhagyanagar temple protection committee and BJP had threatened to take a procession to Charminar to complete the work.

AP high court had ordered that the status of October 31 should be maintained at the temple and no changes should be allowed. However the state government officials claimed that today's work was not a violation of court order as the shed was very much there on October 30.

Hyderabad city Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma said that the police had nothing to do with the work and it was discharging its duty of maintaining peace. The work was supervised by the civic officials, he said.

MIM is secular and Temple construction is a Hindutva agenda......feel like slapping the author.......Hello, this is India and it is Hindus majority (atleast for the time being).....ooppppssss apologies, this is a secular nation and temples are communal structures! :)

P.S: According to MIM, the temple is illegal as it is in the Islam majority area (legal nitigrities are just an excuse to hide the real reason, causation and intent) ......by their own Logic, then all mosques in India are illegal not because they are in a Hindus majority country but they have been built on some temple or the others.....FCuktards islamics.....take that!

HYDERABAD: Sporadic incidents of violence rocked the Old City after Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislators were arrested by police when they were trying to march towards Bhagyalakshmi temple at Charminar on Sunday. At some places, police had to fire tear gas shells and resort to mild lathicharge to disperse protestors.

The MLAs gathered in the Old City after the Bhagyalakshmi temple management restored tarpaulin on the make-shift pandal with the assistance of the Hyderabad district administration as per the high court's order.

At 5am, police barricaded all streets leading to Charminar from Gulzar Houz, Shah Ali Banda, Kotla Alijah Hussaini Alam, Moghulpura and Mirchowk.

Under the supervision of officials from the Hyderabad collectorate, GHMC and Archeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple management began restoring the tarpaulin at 7am and completed it in an hour. Police provided security cover for the entire operation.

On learning about the tarpaulin restoration work, seven MIM legislators, including their floor leader in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi, gathered at Volta cafe in Moghalpura at 8am. As they were planning to move towards Bhagyalakshmi temple, police, who were already waiting there, picked up the legislators along with six corporators.

However, while they were being shifted into police vehicles, the legislators managed to give the slip to the cops. Another team of police personnel posted at Kotla Alijah intercepted five MLAs — Akbaruddin Owaisi, Ahmed Balala, Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Moazzam Khan, Mumtaz Khan — along with the corporators, were taken into custody again.

Two other legislators, MLA Mohammed Muqtada Khan alias Afsar Khan and MLC Altaf Hyderabad Rizvi, who managed to escape even from there, were arrested near Gulzar Houz. All the arrested legislators and corporators were shifted to the Bolarum police station.

Later in the day, Nampally MLA Virasat Rasool Khan and four corporators reached Ravindra Bharathi, where chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was attending an event organized on the occasion of Minorities' Welfare Day, and staged a protest against the arrest of his party leaders. Police immediately picked up the MLA and his associates and shifted them to the Gandhi Nagar police station.

As the news of arrest of MIM leaders started flashing on news channels, sporadic incidents of stone pelting were reported at Chandrayangutta X Roads, Anmol Hotel, Edi Bazar, Kalabhairavi temple, Hussainialam and Musabowli X Roads.

Four RTC buses, two cars, an ATM and a garments showroom were damaged in the violence. A mob targeted RTC buses on the Chandrayangutta main road and broke windshields of three buses.

Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob at Chandrayangutta and several people, including MIM corporator Samad, suffered minor injuries.

Protestors carrying black flags staged dharnas at Gulzar Houz, Nalgonda X Roads, Chanderghat, Chanchalguda, Tolichowki, Humayun Nagar and Punjagutta. Effigies of the state government were burnt at Machili Kaman and Charminar. Later in the evening, police fired tear gas shells and lathi-charged the stone-hurling mob at Talabkatta in Bhavani Nagar.

Hyderabad police commissioner Anurag Sharma supervised the situation from his office at Purani Haveli since morning. Later in the night, the commissioner issued a press release clarifying that they had only provided bandobust for implementation of the high court orders.

"In relation to the high court's orders, the collector and the GHMC commissioner had consulted Archeological Survey of India (ASI) officials to determine the status (of temple pandal cover) as on October 30. ASI gave its opinion in writing that on October 30, there was a cover on the temporary structure at the temple. Based on these facts, the civic authorities permitted the Bhagyalakshmi temple committee to cover the temple structure with tarpaulin sheets, as an interim measure. Since, it was a sensitive issue, police force was deployed in the area to maintain peace and law & order," Anurag Sharma said in the release.

Police booked 18 cases in relation to Sunday's violence and arrested 109 persons. By 6.45pm, all the arrested legislators were released.

Is there no case pending against Owassi by which his tail can be twisted?

He should be invited by the Prime Minister for dinner or lunch as he had done with Mulayam and Mayawati.

The author got it all wrong Kishen Reddy is Jagan fan(reddy-reddy buddy buddy). He is also known as a coward in political circles. The current drama is all political bargaining by Jagan for his cases. What MIM fears most is TDP not BJP it was NT Rama Rao who castrated MIM it was CBN who defanged it not BJP.BJP will not survive in AP without the support of Kammas or Reddies. The author saying awakening of Hindutva consciousness is right but Rise of BJP is mental masturbation. The OBCs are with TDP it is their party infact

BJP is no force in AP.

The political churn is decided by the Reddy and the Kammas.

MIM is merely a force multiplier.

Bi-elections are different from general elections. The bi elections had sitting candidates not fresh faces real elections require cadre and organizational capability in a different league. Now Jagan is poaching congress vote bank reddies,Muslims and SC-Malas not TDP vote bank. The Congress is pragmatic why would it tolerate someone who can finish it off permanently in AP.TDP is quite consolidating its vote

'Cong govt is licking the boots of BJP, Sangh Parivar'

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, an influential political party in Andhra Pradesh, pulled the rug from under the feet of the ruling Congress state government on Monday after terming it "communal, a stooge of Sangh Parivar and anti-people".

The party, which has seven members in the state assembly, two in the legislative council and one in the Lok Sabha, has also decided to discontinue its support to the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.

The party has already written a letter to state Governor E S L Narasimhan and President Pranab Mukherjee, informing them of its decision to withdraw support.

MIM president and member of Lok Sabha from Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi also went hammer and tongs against Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy.

"He has stooped to the level of licking the boot of the Sangh Parivar. He is working to strengthen the BJP in Hyderabad and surrounding areas," he alleged.

"Congress has found a rightful successor to PV Narasimha Rao after so many years," Owaisi said tongue-in-cheek, adding that by allowing the extension of a temple at the Charminar Monument in violation of a ruling by the Andhra Pradesh high court, the state Congress government had revived the memories of December 6, 1992 when the Congress government led by Rao had watched silently while members of the Sangh Parivar brought down the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

The decision to end its 14-year-long friendly relationship with the Congress was taken at an emergency meeting of the party's executive council and the advisory council at its headquarters at Daurssalam, Hyderabad.

The dramatic development unfolded in the backdrop of Sunday's incident -- in which a new shed was laid over the disputed temple adjacent to the historic monument of Charminar -- under heavy security provided by the police and supervised by the civic administration.

The MIM was also incensed over the curfew-like restrictions imposed in the old city, where roads were closed with barbed wire fencing and the party's MLAs were arrested when they tried to oppose the construction work on the temple.

The MIM has strongly opposed the construction on the ground that it was a violation of the high court's orders as well as the laws protecting the national monument.

At the MIM headquarters, thousands of its workers shouted slogans against the chief minister and Congress party.

The relationship between the MIM and the Congress in the state had become strained over the last two years after a series of communal riots rocked the state.

Owaisi unleashed a torrent of grievances against the Congress government, saying the government and the police had connived with the Sangh Parivar and the BJP to target and victimise the Muslim minority community since the death of then chief minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy in 2009.

Listing out the incidents, Owaisi said Hyderabad and other places in the state witnessed a series of communal riots in which the minority community was systematically targeted. Instead of coming to the rescue of Muslims, the government and the police also targeted them with indiscriminate arrests and false cases, he said.

He listed the riots during Hanuman Jayanti in Hyderabad in 2010 when K Rosaiah was the chief minister, wide-spread riots in Adoni town of Kurnool district on September 5, 2011 during Ganeshostsav procession, in Karimnagar in March-April 2011, in Tandur in February 2011 and September 2012, Miryalagda and Siddipet in 2011.

"In all these incidents, Muslims and their properties were targeted by Sangh Parivar activists but the police booked cases against Muslims, arrested and tortured them", he said.

Owaisi alleged that in the riots in Sangareddy town of Medak district in March this year, the local Congress legislator colluded with the Sangh Parivar and shops and properties of Muslims were burnt in the presence of the police.

"After each of those incidents, we met the chief minister and urged him to check the violence and victimisation of Muslims, but he never took any action," he said.

On the incident at Charminar, he said that every year, the illegal structure there was expanded with the active connivance of the state government, the city police and the Archaeological Survey of India. He said the MIM had approached the high court for the protection of the monument as it was part of the national heritage.

"But again the administration and ASI colluded with the Sangh Parivar to allow the extension of the temple," he said.

Owaisi thanked UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the cooperation she had extended till now but said that he was compelled to withdraw support at the Centre because of the "communal and inefficient" chief minister in the state.

"Now our top priority is to pull down this government. I will tour the state and expose the communal and anti-people face of this government," he said.

When asked whether he will team up with YSR Congress headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy, Owaisi said that it was a premature question.

"We will see when the next elections approach; there are many parties in the state," he said.

Significantly, Owaisi added, "Jagan is my friend. Kiran Kumar Reddy was my friend".

Though there is no immediate threat of the collapse of the Congress government, the withdrawal of support by MIM will put it in a very precarious situation. In the assembly with 294 members, Congress has only 152 MLAs and it needs at least 147 to survive.

If a few more members desert the Congress to join hands with Jagan Mohan Reddy, the state government's fall will be imminent.

this man Owaisi is nothing but a paid agent of ISI who is hell bent to cause religious violent in the sensitive areas of Hyderabad.in fact Hyderabad is home to a large no. of razakars who always have this romantic feeling for the pakis since 1947.now i am not a communal person nor do i support any communal violence but these type of people are the main reason for spreading of hatred!in kolkata,a lot of mosques have been built in the hindu majority areas but people don't complain about them as they have no problem with the mosques, similarly many hindu temples are also being bult in the muslim majority areas of kolkata and the reaction of the muslim community is just fine and btw kolkata has around 35%-40% muslims.another interesting thing is that the Durga puja which is the largest festival of Bengal is celebrated by both these communities with great enthusiasm and in fact people of both communities buy new clothes to wear them in durga puja and many puja committees have a large no. of muslim members and in some cases the president of the committee is a muslim, similarly people from both communities celebrate Eid with the same kind of enthusiasm and excitement.so we can clearly see that the two communities can co-exist peacefully like brothers when they have the right mentality to live together as one but i think the mentality of the common hyderabadis are much more conservative(not to disrespect any hyderabadi but these are my personal views!).
