This is sure to put India in a bind. It cannot upset the US for a variety of reasons, which are well known, and yet India has to have good relations with Iran for strategic reasons as also for the much required gas for India's energy hungry needs. If India does not respond favourably, then China will capitalise on this issue and entrench itself further in Iran. India has a immense potential to act as the honest broker between the US and Iran and it is important for the US to mend fences with Iran so that its effort in Afghanistan is not held at ransom by Pakistan and the route from Iran to Afghanistan can be opened up and it is a shorter and less arduous logistic route. There is another hurdle for India and that is the pipeline will have to cross Pakistan, who could shut it down as and when it requires and it need not be only in war. In this context, Balochistan play a major role. In the current situation, Baloochistan is a part of Pakistan and hence Pakistan can always stop the supply. Therefore, the undersea route also requires thought. But then, that too will have to be guarded with naval presence and to this end the port of Chahbahar, built by India, would be an important base for the Indian Navy to operate from. What should India do wherein it is win win for India?
