This is sure to put India in a bind.

It cannot upset the US for a variety of reasons, which are well known, and yet India has to have good relations with Iran for strategic reasons as also for the much required gas for India's energy hungry needs. If India does not respond favourably, then China will capitalise on this issue and entrench itself further in Iran.

India has a immense potential to act as the honest broker between the US and Iran and it is important for the US to mend fences with Iran so that its effort in Afghanistan is not held at ransom by Pakistan and the route from Iran to Afghanistan can be opened up and it is a shorter and less arduous logistic route.

There is another hurdle for India and that is the pipeline will have to cross Pakistan, who could shut it down as and when it requires and it need not be only in war. In this context, Balochistan play a major role. In the current situation, Baloochistan is a part of Pakistan and hence Pakistan can always stop the supply. Therefore, the undersea route also requires thought. But then, that too will have to be guarded with naval presence and to this end the port of Chahbahar, built by India, would be an important base for the Indian Navy to operate from.

What should India do wherein it is win win for India?

I think India should go ahead with the investment. Americans need to see that it is a commercial investment.

If USA can invest in Saudi, what is the problem wit India investing in Iran? We do share the goal of no nukes for Iran but we are not against Iran as a country.

I donot see any war coming in few years. USA has its hand full and cannot take chances against Iran. USA will try to resolve nuclear issue diplomatically. If there was any chance of war it would have started with bombing of busher by Israel before fuel was loaded.
Its necessary for us to counter Chinese influence in Iran. We need to convince our stand to USA . I am sure they will be more than willing to listen if China angle is properly explained.

We dont need to explain anything to anyone. It is in our interest to invest in iran and we should do it without giving a shit about what others think. usa gives $$$ to pak so does it care about us ?

Just to remind you that companies dealing with Iran will be coming under USA sanction or can be blacklisted. If a company decide to invest in Iran USA cannot do anything about it except blacklisting it .

Just yesterday you might have noticed a new development in UNSC approach about kashmir. We have started to develop a new strategic partnership with USA , both of us should be concerned about each other interests. What is harm in trying to invest in Iran after discussing it with one of partners as they also have a stake in that country ?

USA gives dollar to Pakistan and when we complain to USA does it not listen and explain the circumstances under which that money was given. we cannot agree on each issue and shouldn't agree on everything as its sign of submission but there is no harm in explaining it .

usa does what is in there own interest. it doesn't think about others.

as a nation we should do what is in our own interest...its not like we are giving iran weapons. create another company and deal with iran, the yanks can blacklist it all they want.

Did I suggested that we shouldn't be investing in Iran? I said that we should try to convince USA that its in their and our strategic interest to invest in Iran specially to counter China.

A good sailor is one that uses wind to reach to the shore rather than braving it to reach the shore. All I am trying to say is that we should act smart instead of being foolishly brave.

It will be a big task ahead to convince usa to make an exception for india like a nuke deal.

If US can support Pakistan with money and military aid, then the contention that India can similarly have good ties with Iran and reap economic benefits in the runoff.

    However, what should be taken into the reckoning is;

    1. Can India do without the US?

    2. Can the US do without India?

    3. If the US can do without India, what will the repercussions be:
    (a) Internationally.
    (b) Domestically, both in the US and in India.
    (c) Strategically.

If it is worthwhile to ignore the US objections, then India should do so.

Currently, India is on the threshold of greater economic, scientific, high technology breakthrough.

One wonders if spurning the US for Iran (with all the benefits) would give India a win win spinoff.

You go India. Just go ahead and do whatever deal you need to do with Iran. Why do we Indians care about US concerns, many of which are unfounded? They don't give a simian's posterior about our concerns about US aid to Pakistan. should we not return the favour? After all we are gentlemen, aren't we?

We should simply tell the US that, "If you stop all your aid to Pakistan, send in your forces and take out their nukes and completely remove their footprint from Afghanistan, then you may hope that we will not go ahead with strategic and energy deals with Iran."

True. India has to walk the tightrope. We can't antagonize USA too much and at the same time we can't let them dictate our foreign policy.

Some deft footwork is required to handle this googly.

If tomorrow there is a news that Iran is getting close to a nuke then tensions will mount and situation can go out of control soon. So sanctions mean loosing your billions of dollars

If war breaks out dont we loose our billions of dollars of investments. Plus investing billions in Iran , just after the Obama visit means loosing all the potential gains in various areas.

Remember there is an anti India lobby in US State department that still favors Pakistan and says that India inspite of being an Cold war enemy has got too many favours

Our gas production is increasing and with many new fields coming up throughout the world LNG prices will not harden .

Let China Capitalize on what India will refuse from Iran. This will make rift more prominent in Asia and this is what USA would love to see. One has to weigh between potential states who can invest more in front line states. No one is more proactive than USA period. China is an empty vessel who can make louder noises but can not even fancy its proxies openly against anyone.

Iran is very good card India can play because of Israel, Arab and west's concern about Iran. Chinese as expansionist card has yet to be groomed (we here at DFI can make sure it to be faster :) ) well to be playable to invite USA investment in India. Also India can not risk to confront with China cause we have to fix Pakistan who is ready to confront with us head on.

Snubbing Iran is not going to effect our aspirations in Afghanistan. Iran do not have resources to influence that part of the world, may has some leverage due to its ethnic strongholds but insignificant enough to be proved as policy changers. Indian investment is pretty balanced but retractable. Given the nature of Politics of Afghanistan everything is still volatile with some grievous indications of Taliban network still at large like Taliban govt. in exile due to USA presence. Taliban has many takers, those who are potentially more dedicated and harmful than Iran who is busy coping with west manipulations.

There will be always a silver lining if Iran will not help India given the fact India is now more tilted towards USA. Iran can not afford unstable Talibanised Afghanistan. It will have no other option to side with likewise parties interested like India and China as well. India can afford not to please Iran for long time.

Interestingly Iranian Itzy bitzy super fatwaman, bigoted religious supremo has vowed to help Kashmiri strugle. Let see how much Iran can itch on Indo-USA ties. Next few years are going to test Indian wisdom.

Hit and Run you are being naive the Chinese will capitalize on this .They have a veto in the UN assembly if US wants that veto it must allow China to do business with Iran (thats why we need a veto power)

The rift maybe prominent, however, unless there is war, PRC will benefit from energy out of Iran while India will be left out. Trade embargoes will not work if PRC is trading with Iran. US companies have too many economical links with PRC. This is the saddest part.

Not sure if Pakistan is really ready to confront India but yes, we cannot confront China. I have a feeling Pakistan frequently subtly threatens India with nukes because it does not want a direct conflict with India but for a proxy war.

Snubbing Iran will definitely affect our aspirations in Afghanistan. Iran is the only way India can send in aid to Afghanistan. The other route would be to ship them to Russia, either at Novorossiysk, Odessa or Vladivostok, which would be economically insane. Moreover, Indian investment is not retractable. For eaxmple, all the money spent in building the Zaranj-Delaram highway or the Power Station or the Parliament are monies spent (well spent) but they cannot be retracted. It's gone.

True. With even Russia snubbing them recently (S-300 missiles), Iran will have to take care not to lose the few friends it still has around. It needs to mature up and realise India has some other compulsions as well and cannot, even if it wanted, to seal all deals with Iran. However, India needs to walk the tightrope, and India, IMHO, cannot afford to displease Iran for a long time.

Yes, Khamenei can keep making jingoistic comments. Iran should just help itself by keeping such people under control instead of setting deadlines for India (regarding energy deal).
