Teacher dragged out of class and thrashed

Suri, June 22: An English teacher in a Birbhum school was today beaten up outside his classroom by suspected Trinamul workers who accused him of "misbehaving" with some girl students.

Partha Pratim Mukherjee, who taught in Lalgulia High School in Suri and gave free tuitions to students weak in studies, was dragged out and beaten up with sticks and rods.

The Trinamul group had come to the school to hold a meeting with the teacher in-charge over the allegation of misbehaviour against Mukherjee. A Trinamul local leader, who heads the school managing committee and had led the group to the school, said the teacher had been assaulted as some of them had heard "derogatory things" about him.

Last month, a Class VIII boy had alleged that Mukherjee misbehaved with some girl students. There is no police complaint against the teacher, nor had the school come across any such instance, so it is unclear what prompted the student to make such an allegation.

A few students who are fond of Mukherjee had slapped the Class VIII boy, accusing him of spreading canards about the teacher.

The boy complained about the assault to his father, a Trinamul activist, and iterated his allegation against Mukherjee.

Today, about 70 party activists led by Sanjit Roy, Trinamul's anchal committee president as well as the school's managing committee chief, went to meet teacher in-charge Santosh Kumar Bhandari.

Roy tried to explain the attack, saying: "We heard some of the derogatory things about Mukherjee. The Trinamul activists were inflamed about this and thought some action should be taken against the teacher. So when the Class VIII was beaten up by his seniors, they thought that it was time to act against the teacher and so he was beaten up."

According to the version provided by Bhandari, while Roy and some other Trinamul leaders went to his room to meet him, another section barged into the room where Mukherjee was teaching and dragged him out.

He was punched and kicked for 15 minutes. Mukherjee suffered injuries in his face, chest and abdomen and has been admitted to a private hospital in Durgapur.

Mukherjee's brother Dhananjay has lodged a complaint against unknown persons at Suri police station. No arrests have been made.

According to Bhandari, Mukherjee, 42, had joined the school in 2007. Being a bachelor, he used to stay back in the school for hours after classes and gave free tuitions to students who were weak in their studies.

Dhananjay said Mukherjee's decision to give free tuitions angered a section of teachers, who thought he was gaining popularity among students.

"My brother was very popular with the students and he used to spend a lot of time with them, providing free tuition both to boys and girls," Dhananjay said. "This irked several teachers of the school who started spreading lies about him."

Dhananjay claimed that the "malicious campaign" spread to the village and angered local Trinamul activists.

According to Bhandari, the trigger behind the attack on Mukherjee was the beating up of the Class VIII boy by some students. Sources said this made the Trinamul leaders and activists decide on "settling scores" with Mukherjee.

Mamata Banerjee is the biggest curse of WB, but so are the "buddhijibis" who were up in arms against Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.

As they say, "buddhiji, buddhiman, buddhi diye kore khan."

WB is a good candidate for something in the lines of the 2nd Amendment in the US. The government is a tyranny.
