CHENNAI: In a eleventh hour relief to the organisers of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) conference here, the Madras high court granted permission for the meet by staying the Chennai city police commissioner's order denying police clearance.

At a special sitting on Sunday morning, a division bench comprising Jutice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice M Venugopal stayed the August 10 order of the city police commissioner denying permission for the conference. The bench also incorporated certain conditions, such as limiting the number of participants to 8,000 as informed by the organisers' counsel.

The interim order, delivered in a packed court hall, was greeted by cheer and slogans by DMK party advocates, who hailed it was a victory for DMK and their party leader.

Earlier, during arguments, senior advocate P Wilson submitted that the police had denied permission without even affording an opportunity to clarify the doubts that the police had raised. Contesting the government's apprehension that nearly one lakh people were expected to take part in the meet, Wilson said only 2,500 invitations had been sent to participants and thatmthe number would not exceed 8,000.

Advocate-general A Navaneethakrishnan said there were intelligence inputs that forced the authorities to deny permission for the meet. Noting that the conference venue was less than 100 metres from the government Royapettah hospital, Navaneethakrishnan further said it was the oldest road in the city and people in the city would be put to severe inconvenience.

Wonder what was the need for this meet. Basically planning to instigate another round of demands for division of another country.

You actually are right about the politics part.

:pound: But those Lankan Tamils don't even like you guys. Get real and stop being fooled by your regional parties with the stupid Lankan Tamil card.

See the thing is that DMK and AIADMK are using people of TN as vote banks by playing the Lankan Tamil card. I have interacted with many Tamils, and they don't give a hoot about Lankan Tamils. It's only a fringe section of people who have that extremist mentality.

What did DMK do when they were in power? Nothing. Why are they shouting now? For power in the next elections.

No ones ass is burning. No one cares about Karunanithi these days, so he wants some media attention and he go that.

Could you support your claim with any proof? Every five years people voted in either DMK or AIADMK alternatively.

Srilankan tamils are more ethnically close to Sinhalese than the Indian Tamils.
