Suicide bombers carrying rockets and grenades attacked one of the biggest Nato military bases in Afghanistan today, killing an American contractor and wounding nine US troops.

About a dozen militants, many wearing suicide vests packed with explosives, were killed, the Pentagon said.

The fighting came the day after a suicide bomber attacked a military convoy in Kabul, killing 12 Afghan civilians and six foreign service personnel.

A spokesman for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) would not identify the American contractor until next of kin had been told.

The attacks may mark the start of a Taliban spring offensive against high-profile foreign targets.

The early-morning assault on Bagram airbase, led by about 30 Taliban insurgents, continued for hours with sporadic rocket and small arms fire. One rocket landed inside the base, causing minor damage, but no insurgents managed to get inside, Isaf said.

"We're always prepared to deal with attacks on our base," said spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Counts.

Let's see how many Taliban "strikes" does it take for Obama ji to put out through some retaliatory attacks on Paks either militarily or diplomatically..

Have you considered becoming a military advisor to the Taliban?

One Yank contractor KIA and 12 Taliban KIA. Not a bad ratio. Bad medicine for Taliban.

You do realize those same manpads could just as easily be hunting IAF birds... we should learn the lesson that America didnt learn in the Afghan war .... an enemy of your enemy might be your friend today but maybe not tomorrow

They did quite succeeded in buying back the Stinger missiles from Taliban. But they can still find manpads in the black market!

In Iraq and Libya Conflict, Lot of MANAPADs went missing.

But, A airbase in enemy territory will be extra carefully protected. There will always be a round-up patrol and infrared/sensors to prevent any kind of threats.

Besides, The aircrafts will fly way above til they reach the mountains i think.

during the kargil war stingers were used to shoot down a mig 21 and mig 27, were they operated by the irregulars or by PA regulars? either way PA could very easily give them a few if they wanted. That would be tragic american made missiles shooting down american planes.

Any base can very easily be targetted using mortars. Regarding MANPADS, they are most useful at the starting and ending points of a flight, when a plane or helicopter takes off or lands.
