Taliban kills 21 kidnapped Pakistani soldiers

Taliban militants have shot dead 21 Pakistani soldiers whom they had kidnapped earlier during an assault on two camps in the volatile northwest of the country.

Officials say the bodies were discovered shortly after midnight in the Jabai area of the Peshawar District. This comes after some 200 insurgents, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, stormed two government paramilitary camps outside the city of Peshawar on Thursday. Two security personnel were killed and another 23 were kidnapped.

One of the hostages managed to escape and another one was found seriously injured, top local official Naveed Akbar Khan said.

"We found 21 bullet riddled bodies of security personnel a short while ago in an uninhabited area," Khan told AFP. "One was found alive but wounded and admitted to hospital while another managed to escape unhurt."

"The hands of soldiers were tied with rope before they were shot," another government official Gul Shehzad said.

He added that the Taliban had accepted responsibility for the attack.

They are not "soldiers" by any stretch of the imagination. Just some local personnel attracted to the easy pay and relatively safe work i.e. manning checkpoints, collecting tolls. Of course they will be overwhelmed by battle-hardened insurgents.

This is a new turn in the war. FATA is one thing, but Peshawar is relatively big fish; and this has been the 5th or 6th attack over the past few weeks.

Pakistani security forces should learn better not to be taken alive but to fight till death. Death is certain, but one must not go down without a fight.

In 2007, there were active plans to handover frontline security duties to FC and Frontier Constabulary duly trained by the Army and US trainers. The US and British trainers had been imparting training to FC men in Warsak and some other locations from 2005 till November 2011. Not only several FC wings were raised to make additional battalions, their scale of weapons and equipment was also enhanced to add to their firepower and to enlarge their scope to carryout defensive and offensive tasks independently. By now, the FC has been sufficiently trained and enriched with considerable experience to tackle militant threat along the border regions independently. However, except for Balochistan, so far the FC has not taken over frontline duties in northwestern regions and relieved the Army's 147000 troops engaged in fighting war on terror.

The US will again ditch Pakistan | Opinion - Conservative
