@p2prada, the cost of 6 Billion is for two ACs not one
My bad. It is for two.

The biggest difference in my opinion will be in the service life of the two comparative carriers.
50 years on Eli vs minimum 30 years for Gorky.

Other than that, the kind of equipment on board the ships would be different too.

£6.2bn ($9.9bn) for two supercarriers of a new class... vs the $14bn were spending on one of a new class. Stuff your bitching England.
5 of that 14 is development costs. So program cost will reduce in time with more carriers built.

... and what did the QE-class cost to develop? The comparison remains valid as both are new types.

How can this cash strapped island with the population practically living off the land, and a moth-eaten, mothballed military, afford such a costly project?

That is the million dollar question!

Second carrier is not going to be made iirc. There were rumors about them offering to India. But that was about 2-3 years ago. British cut their allocation for defence and I doubt they will make the second carrier
They will make the Aircraft carrier no doubt. It would be more expensive to cancel the second one at this stage. Not to mention such a decision would cost hundreds, if not thousands of scarce jobs, which no govt will be able to approve.

The plan is to mothball the second carrier as soon as it finishes construction.

The decision on whether to operate a second carrier won't be made until 2015 at the earliest. One new possibility though. South Korea recently announced it's intention to acquire carriers as well. Granted, they're planning to build two of their own Cavour-sized ships in the 2030s, but they might find a brand-new British supercarrier in the 2020s rather tempting should the English lack stomachs to operate both.

Not saying that you are wrong.

Anyway, the Ford class program is too big for a real comparison with any other country.

They are shutting down the rest of their military to afford this. The Queen of the Seas can't be reduced to a fishing village, after all.

A more fundamental question is, why are the Brits wasting money on such toys when they are in economic crisis, recession, etc.? Far from having any threat to their integrity, no one even cares about them - they are a thoroughly insignificant nation.

And on top of this, they go around giving "aid" to other nations and having a (false) moral high ground.

Bryant Harrison McGill, the American author said

"Architects of grandeur are often the master builders of disillusionment".

Britain epitomises it!

Eventually they will want a more powerful ally. They know Europe can no longer provide the military capability as they did in the past.

The Russians are improving every year. The Chinese are improving every month.
Indians are always reinventing the wheel :)

india should give some aid so that they could get rid of the 2nd one after the completion

i have been reading about this biggest ever project of UK for years and they considered two carriers mainly considering selling one to india. anyone here to confirm the same??????

and yes its little expansive but it is definitely going to have some of the most advanced technologies of UK/US, and i would favor one for india, if it comes with technologies transfer, if india may join this project for the rest of the development too......

world is changing and india may come little close to UK's defence industry with buying one AC of this project, along with already howk trainer aircraft. and why not if india have used British carrier before too? :ranger:

Another Indian poster with inferiority complex? Don't we already have enough of them?
I don't think it is "inferiority complex". Even I would make similar comments about the Brits. This is entirely due to the sanctimonious and pompous and condescending nature of Brits online. I have learnt from experience that Brits cannot bear to see India as anything other than their stereotypical land of cows and snake charmers. If we send a rocket up, "oooh, poor India starving India". If some private company builds a supertall in Mumbai, "oooh, dirty India slum India". If we build a massive border fence between India and Pakistan, "ooooh see what they have been doing with our aid all these years".

Frankly, it is the Brits who have an inferiority complex, considering that they are seeing the way their economy is stagnating and their nation being taken over by violent Muslim immigrants. They have delusions of past grandeur and still have the "colonial complex". Internet Indians will certainly respond the way they are responding on this thread.

With the Entry of this Super carrier , Royal Navy should consider Royal HMS Illustrious,

32 years of Action Packed and Glorious service coming to an end by the end of 2014 and its going to start an undecided new carrer as some claim it to be an Museum, art spaces, galleries, restaurants and a hotel while others came up with a proposal for Commonwealth Yacht,

Lets wait and see what happens with the Royal HMS Illustrious... Lets Salute HMS for the 32 years of service...
