In 71 war his jet was damaged by a PAF sidewinder fired by a j-6.

Half of the missile was stuck in the jet itself
Most of the IAF losses during 1971 war was SU 7. It was also vulnerable to Pak Air defense guns.

Irony is that IAF flew 6 sorties per pilot per day in 1971 war on su-7's...

Sukhoi fleet is bogged down by crappy maintenance work(for which only hal and mod is to blame)

Not to forget Gp. Capt. Perumal's Shaurya Chakra winning flying in the days leading upto the Kargil War:
Agra: It was 9 a.m. on May 21, 1999. A Canberra bomber was flying on reconnaissance duty over a hill in Kargil when a Pakistani Stinger missile slammed into it, damaging the engine and portions of the plane. But the sturdy aircraft did not fail its crew, it carried them back to the base.

“We all are alive,” said crewmembers of the warrior plane, profusely thanking the Canberra, which was phased out of the Indian Air Force Friday.

“The Kargil (in Jammu and Kashmir) operation was on full swing. We took off from Ambala air base on a photo reconnaissance duty and were assigned to photograph the exact positioning of our enemy in seven different locations northeast of a hill in Kargil when we experienced a violent jolt,” said Wing Commander Uday Kant Jha, who was navigator of the aircraft.

“For a moment, we were thrown completely out of our senses. Our first reaction was – we may not live beyond a few minutes,” Jha told IANS, almost eight years after the Kargil conflict.

“The US-made Stinger missile, fired by Pakistani soldiers, damaged our starboard (right) engine. At least two meters of the jet pipe was damaged and there were some holes in other places as well,” he said, narrating his experience.

The IAF escort aircraft reported seeing a bright flash along with debris flying off and smoke emanating from the Canberra’s right engine.

Jha said that initially he and his pilot A. Perumal decided to eject out of the hit plane but decided otherwise after realising that the fuel tank was intact.

“I salute the plane and its unchallenged valour. We are alive today because of the Canberra and its reliability,” said Perumal, recounting the eventful day when he was in the cockpit.

Besides the crew’s skill and efficiency it was the fighter aircraft that supported them ably in their return to the Srinagar air base.

“We returned safe within 30 minutes of the missile hit and that too with the photographs intact, which helped us in our further operation,” he said.

Wing Commander Jha said it was only after they reached Srinagar air base that they were able to gauge the magnitude of the damage to the craft. “We simply thanked the aircraft for not falling apart in the sky.”

“Though I got the ‘Vayu Sena Medal’ and Group Captain Perumal received the Shaurya Chakra, yet we believe that a lot of credit goes to the warrior bird,” Jha said.

It has been quite a while. I think it was proposed during defexpo 2012.

Range is unclear as India wasn't a part of MTCR back then but should be atleast 300km.

Brahmos NG is a smaller Brahmos with range equal to the regular Brahmos.
In case you are wondering how it is achieved, the Russian electrical components and processors which were supposedly very large heavy have been replaced with newer smaller but equally effective subsystems.

Finally the dream of 3 Brahmos is being realized....

I think it was IAF asked for 3 Brahmos on flanker and 2 on fulkrum(maybe for IN)....

Once flankers test it, we can go for fulkrum testing....

Things just went from bad to worse for Indian enemies....

There is no official information on whether the new systems are Indian or not or whether they have indigenous content.
Information on Brahmos is strictly controlled, the MoD last year even refused to tell the Parliament how many missiles have been deployed.
We will have to wait and see.

I was wondering if the Indian Su-30MKI could carry "pre-strategic" weapons like the ASMP (Air-Sol Moyenne Portee) ramjet cruise missiles on French Mirage-2000N.. I know that many Western missiles and targeting pods have been certified for the Indian Su-30MKI..

Due to the relatively open architecture of the Su-30MKI's software, deploying a cruise missile like the ASMP is certainly possible.
However depending on the size and weight of the weapon, structural modifications might have to be made on the air-frame to accommodate the weapon.
For eg: To accommodate the Brahmos A, the structure of the Su-30MKI's undercarriage had to be modified.

Was there no auto ground clearances system to prevent ground collision
At low level high alt flying they are always bzzying. I am amazed to know that they are doing this that too in the night.
They just depend on their night vision gear for direct visual flying.

this is damn dangerous. You are just few 50 100 feet above a peak or mountain making sharp turns at 900kms per hour.. in the dark to penetrate into enemy airspace for air strike.
In afghanistan the americans did that, but there the mountains are not as rough as himalayas are.
This is unbelievable.

Defence News, India has asked for more time to study proposed Su-30 MKI upgrade to Super Sukhois
3-4 minutes

Russia has offered to upgrade its existing Su-30 fleet in India to make it “very close to” the fifth generation fighter, but India has asked for time to evaluate its strategy, an official from Russian Helicopters maker Rostec said.

Interacting with a select group of journalists on the sidelines of International Air show MAKS in Moscow, Rostec’s Director of International Cooperation and Regional Policy Victor N. Kladov said Russia had made the offer for upgradation of the Su-30 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month.

“As far as I know it was raised between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Modi in St Petersburg last month. The Indian Prime Minister once again reiterated that the Indian side needs time to evaluate its strategy of development and how to spend the money,” Kladov said.

“We are offering a package for modernising the Su-30 aircraft. It will obtain new capabilities, it will be very close to the fifth generation aircraft in capabilities. This is a deep modernisation, everything should be changed – engine, computers, radar etc,” he said.

Asked how much would such upgradation cost, he said that would depend on what upgradation India selects. “The Indian Air Force has to evaluate its strategy and then take a decision,” he said.

The twin-jet multirole air superiority fighter Su-30 is developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and built under licence by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

India has around 230 Su-30 jets which remain the frontline fighter for the IAF and more are under production.

The upgraded Super Sukhois will include a modernized cockpit. A major part of the upgrade also involves avionics and sensors.

The aircraft will have advanced stealth capabilities and be equipped with the Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, an infrared homing system, new advanced avionics, and active electronically scanned array.

What sensors do the MKIs have to detect heat seekers ? Is it equipped with uv band MAWS ? Advanced RWR and Jammer pod won't help against passive heat seekers. Even in Kargil conflict MiG21 was lost to IR stinger MANPAD.
