Indian Team To Visit Russia For Critical Military Purchases


The Indian armed forces are on a drive to shore up war reserves currently at half of the required 40 days of military material for intense fighting.
New Delhi
– A team of senior Indian government officials will soon visit Russia to fast-track the delivery of guns and ammunition for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The team will be seeking fast delivery of rockets and ammunition for Mi-35 helicopter gunships and Su-30 fighter jets as well as some more purchase orders, sources told Sputnik.
The committee represented by IAF and Defense Ministry officials had already held discussions on emergency purchase late last year. The IAF plans to purchase 50,000 rounds of 30mm GsH ammunition for Su-30 fighter jets and more than 60,000 rounds of 12.7 mm ammo for Mi-35 gunships.
India has started building its inventory after the country's highest auditing authority, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), found shortfalls in the defence preparedness. Its report noted that some types of ammunition would not even last for 10 days if a war were to break out. The ammunition shortage was even more worrying after multiple terrorist attacks on the Indian military and its retaliation on terror camps along the border with Pakistan.
Sources said in the last three months or so, India has bought arms and ammunition worth more than $ 1 bn from Russia and Israel for Indian Army and Navy under a fast track procedure instead of relying on the notoriously slow bureaucratic channels.
Additional purchases will be made amid talk of reviving the Cold Start doctrine of war with Pakistan. It visualizes lightening quick armored strikes into Pakistan and capture of bargaining territory before its army has the time to find its feet or retaliate with a tactical nuclear weapon.
A fresh lease of life was given to this untested doctrine by the newly appointed Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat: "Future wars will be short and intense and you have to be prepared to move fast. Now this is something which you can term in whatever way you want", said General Bipin Rawat during his first press interaction in Delhi earlier this month.

Super Sukhoi Upgrade deal by mid-2017: HAL Chief

T. Suvarna Raju, Director (Design & Development) of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd hopes that major announcement will be made in next few months that HAL has been selected has lead integrator for the SU-30MKI upgrade programme. a major part of the upgrade to Super Sukhoi involves avionics and sensors. the fleet will get new displays, avionics and an AESA radar, with costs running at $12-20 million per aircraft which in total could cost of more than $8 billion. The whole purpose of upgrading to Super Sukhoi standard is to bring existing fleet to the near fifth-generation level to increase its combat worthiness.

Where is the promised engine upgrade or updates?
well there is no info about that and it might not be. last time the news was " upgrade package will large concentrate on bringing major changes to it Avionics , Software, Pilot interface and Integration of new AESA Multi-mode Radar .Aircraft will come with new weapons systems developed for FGFA and other Indigenous Weapons systems been developed in India. Plans are to bring Sukhoi’s close to FGFA in terms of Capabilities.
super Sukhoi will see adoption of stealth measures in minimizing RCS of the aircraft and the aircraft will also be equipped with longer range missiles along with an infrared homing system and upgraded cockpit and major changes in avionics and sensors are planned to bring Super Sukhoi’s close to FGFA in performance minus inherent stealth design, super-cruise capability and internal weapon-carrying bays."
And i have also read some were there is also plan to replace outer structure with composit to reduce weight and RCS that what i am looking for in new upgrade..

Well AESA , avionics , software , machines pilot interface , new weapons, are all good .
My question in what will be change to
1. Engine to bring mtbo to 4000 hr and uprate thrust .
2. How stealth will be achieved.
Engine can do better if we use 117 tech , 3rd generation scb blade with thermobaric coating , aprated engine with higher mtbo is possible .
Or super Sukhoi come with same engine of su 30 .
Stealth is my major concern .
You are not going to change degine for stealth , no hiding of engine blade , than only few things remain on board such a composite skin , stealth radom, stealth canopy , decreasing IR signature of engine exhaust etc etc . Composite skin I think is a viable option . But how much it going to decrease rcs is to see . Can anyone throw light on this ? Also change in engine is included in upgrade or not ?

for engine i think they are already working on it (to get more than 75% ability ), it not going to be target to achieve stealth, reduction on rcs using radar absorbing Composite skin and paint, well u see that mki order to be completed around 2020. and there is also talk fo fgfa to induction start around 2025. currently both china and pak don't have any plane to match mki, china j-20 is in lsp and is no going to inducted till 2022-23 in large number and i dont think they are going to put it near Indian border in early stage.

It can not be stealth but a low observability aircraft. May be they will make intake like PAKFA to hide the blade and apply RAM in other places. Radar is proposed to be upgraded in 2 phases. In first phase, computer shall be upgraded and in next phase, AESA modules will be applied. May be A to A missile developed for PAKFA may go into super sukhoi. The engine used in Su 35 is a development of Al 31 of MKI it will further developed to generate higher thrust for PAKFA. We can currently use the engine of Su 35.

So nice of you .
On stealth -- Low obesvable will work , means it will be near su35 or more if they succeed to hide blade . Rest composite skin and ram will do .
On radar -- I donot think Russia have a workable GaN module AESA which come to performance better than bars of Sukhoi . So it is wise to upgrade in phase . As computer may be Indian component , it is better to go with it .
On engine--- you put a big clam that we are using engine of su35 (117) . Actually I do goggle and found that 117 has different dimension than Al31 . So we can not replace each other but metallurgy of 117 can be use in Al31. Can you please give me link that we are currently using engine of su35 on our plane .

Super Sukhoi upgrades will firstly deal with strengthening of the air frame. It will not be possible to reshape the air frame, so seems any ideas to make it stealthy will be external or electronic based.
I think the engine would be replaced by AL-41F1S (117S) the Su-35 Engine. This has better thrust (20 KN more than present engine used by Su-30 MKI) and has a longer life and reliability.

The Russians already have ZHUK AE radar GaN based AESA which could be part of the upgrade (maybe even IRBIS E PESA.) I am not sure if the Russians would also provide Khibiny EW systems (but we are using Israeli EW systems.

Su-30 MKI even after upgrade cannot be stealth, but can in a way reduce RCS by material, shaping, RAM coating and also electronic stealth,.

India-Russia To Conclude Su-30MKI Spares Agreement By March

India and Russia are likely to conclude a comprehensive Su-30MKI spares pact by next month that would facilitate quick delivery of required spares to the IAF fleet.

The long term agreement is expected to provide an express process for the delivery of spares for the Indian fleet.

"Unlike in the past where each spare part had to be ordered separately which involved a lengthy process that included license, customs clearance and bank guarantees, the agreement will ensure that spare parts start getting manufactured within a month of the requirement," Yury Slyusar, President UAC told a select group of media at Aero India Airshow Tuesday.

When asked what would be the financial impact of this agreement, he said, it would be 'hundreds of million dollars.'

The agreement includes a spare parts hub at Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) at Bangalore. Currently It takes about 18 months to deliver spares from Russia. After the new setup takes effect, this term is expected to be shortened to 2-3 months.

HAL and the Russian OEM had in the recent past increased the servicability rate of the Su-30MKI to 60 percent. Post the new spare parts agreement, the serviceability rate is expected to climb upto 75 percent, Russian sources said.

The contract is likely to include a new engine AL-41FP and radar upgrade for the aircraft.

EXCLUSIVE: How A Secretive DRDO Lab Is Saving The IAF Su-30MKI


DARE scientists Suneeta Awasthi Singh, Durga Prasad and Regu Kumar at their Aero India stand.

India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has a rough time dealing with a reputation for waste and delays. To be sure, most criticism it faces is justified. Which is perhaps why it’s always heartening to hear about success. Scientists quietly working behind the scenes on small projects that are truly contributing to the lofty ideal of self-reliance. The story your correspondent reports on today isn’t doing just that — it’s also set to save the Indian Air Force precious capital going into the future.

It all begins with the Russian SAP51A jammer pod that Moscow supplied with the Su-30MKI. After grappling for years with the pod, the Indian Air Force finally in 2015 realised it simply couldn’t use them for two reasons. One, they were heavy — and when slung onto wingtip hardpoints, they cut into flying envelope like a butcher’s knife.

‘With the Russian pods, the Sukhoi is basically a transport aircraft,’ one of the scientists says.

The second issue is even worse. The IAF realised the SAP51A pod hadn’t been properly interfacing with the indigenous on-board radar warning receiver (RWR), therefore killing pilots’ chances to exploit both systems fully. While the reasons why the IAF took their time remains unclear (but at one level understandable), DRDO’s Defence Avionics Research Establishment stepped in immediately, offering to help. The result is the pod you see those three scientists standing next to in the photograph above.

DARE’s High Band Jammer (HBJ) pod begins dummy carriage trials in six months on an IAF Su-30MKI, with full integration within the year. By 2019, DARE has committed to seeing the pod become fully operational with the IAF’s Flanker fleet.



Significantly, the HBJ pod will be a fully indigenous one. A DARE scientist explains that the HBJ pod currently has three major systems: the integrated EW suite, the active array phased transmit-receive unit and the cooling system. While the first two have been rapidly developed in-house, the complex cooling system is in process, with DARE sourcing an Israeli system for the moment. The team says they’ll have a fully functional Indian cooling system on the HBJ pod before full integration trials by the end of the year.

Better still, the HBJ pod, the scientists tell Livefist, will spawn a family of EW sensors and systems for platforms like the LCA Tejas, MiG-29 and any other fighter the IAF chooses to operate.


The Indian Air Force, which has embraced the wares from DARE more than kit from most other DRDO labs is expectedly thrilled. An IAF Su-30MKI pilot at the show confirmed that the HBJ pod was a ‘very promising system’ and that ‘more than anything, it is our own in-house development, so I don’t have to run to the Russians if something doesn’t work’.

A DARE scientist associated with the project tells a familiar story: Russia’s unwillingness to share codes (or its insistence on an additional commercial understanding) that could have helped manage the interfacing issues between the SAP51A pod and Indian RWR better and faster.



Incidentally, the indigenous DARE RWR on the IAF’s Su-30MKIs will also be replaced soon. The lab is in final testing of an all digital RWR (the existing system is analog) christened ‘Dhruti’ that will begin ground testing in May this year, followed by a phased installation across the fleet.

DARE is one of the DRDO’s most low-profile laboratories and also one of its most successful. Its systems populate virtually every combat aircraft currently in service, including missile approach warning systems, mission computers and avionics of every kind.

A final little flourish from the unassuming DARE stand at Aero India is the SIVA pod, a development from the nineties that didn’t quite work out and was quietly abandoned. Recently, scientists dusted out from the corner of a DARE warehouse when a team of scientists suddenly realised they could help the people at BrahMos save a penny on testing the airborne seeker on the BrahMos-A.

With the new DRDL-led imaging and monopulse RF seeker (IMR, for a future variant of the BrahMos) fitted into the Siva pod in a matter of days (the DRDL had tendered out for the integration process), the pod was quickly slung onto a Su-30MKI and sent up for the required airborne tests. It was an immediate success, with BrahMos Corp. sending a special word of thanks to the DARE team. Without that flash of brilliance from DARE, BrahMos would have had to hot-step it to Russia or elsewhere to get a testbed. And the Siva pod would have forever remained a failed relic from DARE’s early days. Instead it is now a valuable, cheap test-bed for high-performance systems.


‘Now we have a very capable in-house testbed capable of testing a variety of electronics and systems in the airborne regime. This is the beginning of a testbed capability that is normally very expensive to hire. It will be finetuned and evolved before being offered as a full-fledged service, perhaps even to foreign customers,’ says a DRDO officer.
