The government is set to approve an over Rs 6,500 crore. The project seeks to mount the missile on 42 Sukhoi fighters, and includes 216 air-version missiles.

The government proposes to develop two prototypes of Sukhoi-30MKI fighters fitted with the missile for field trials in the project's first phase.
Once the two prototypes complete a series of field trials, another 40 of the Sukhoi-30MKI fighters would be fitted with the missile in India, a senior official said.

Some modifications to the fuselage of the fighter are required to accommodate the nine-meter-long missile, sources said. Brahmos Aerospace is believed to have developed an air version of the missile, which is lighter than the other variants and has additional rear fins for aerodynamic stability.

Sources said the entire project would be executed in India by Brahmos Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with Russia providing design and technical consultancy.

Our journalists are still confused about the 40 MKIs and 42 MKIs. When they say 42, that number has nothing to do with Brahmos. It is a separate deal for Super MKIs from Russia. The 40 MKIs to be fitted with Brahmos are already operational versions of the MKI to be moderately upgraded for Brahmos and they are to be delivered pretty soon.

Most probably No.

The ones that will be upgraded will need to undergo a lot of tests in Russia. That may take a year at least. Even the Mig-29UPGs are undergoing tests right now. I think the induction date for the Super MKI is end 2013 or early 2014. It is still not clear what is going to happen.

The one with Brahmos upgrades will have strengthened wings and a few other modifications which are unknown.

The contract for the Mig-29 upgrade was signed in March 2008, first flew in Feb 2011.

The contract for Super MKI was signed in May 2010, hopefully it would fly early next year and be inducted by 2014, if not earlier.

In case this Brahmos capable aircraft is a completely upgraded MKI, then it will come as a surprise.

Brahmos missiles to get airlift, to be mounted on Sukhoi-30MKI

NEW DELHI: The government is set to approve an over Rs 6,500 crore programme to mount supersonic cruise missile Brahmos on Sukhoi-30MKI fighters of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The air-launched missile system would significantly add to the conventional offensive capabilities of Indian military might, while intensifying arms race in the region.

The project seeks to mount the missile on 42 Sukhoi fighters, and includes 216 air-version missiles.

Sources said the cabinet committee on security (CCS) would soon be considering for approval the project to mount air version of Brahmos, a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, on IAF's most advanced fighter.

The proposal is being moved in the wake of feasibility studies proving that the air-launched version of the cruise missile can successfully be mounted on the Russian made fighter, and can be fired to lethal effect.

Brahmos Aerospace is a joint venture between India's DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia.

The two-stage missile, with a solid propellant booster engine in the first phase and a liquid ramjet in the second stage, is among the world's fastest missiles, and its developers claim it to be the only supersonic cruise missile in the world. With a deadly accuracy and no effective counter to it, Brahmos is a potent force for Indian armed forces.

Brahmos already has land and naval versions, which are successfully commissioned by the Army and the Navy. A submarine version of the missile is under development. Brahmos Aerospace CEO A Sivathanu Pillai has spoken about the efforts to develop a hypersonic version of the missile.

@Agnostic Indian

The Brahmos project will be carried out in HAL. So, it won't be a Super MKI.

Hmm, I am not so sure. There was this report recently where SFC wants IAF to transfer one squadron of Rafale to the SFC.

SFC is simply too nascent a department to be handed over so many assets at once. Only recently did they learn how to use Prithvi missile.

IAF had previously announced that the Brahmos capable aircraft will be used to add capability along with existing maritime Jaguars in maritime strike a long time ago.

SFC will be allowed to use existing IAF assets whenever the nuclear button is pushed. So, it would seem IAF is delaying SFC's plans of purchasing jets for their own use. So, you can say the 42 Brahmos capable MKIs will be transferred to SFC only at the time of need and not during peace time or conventional war operations.

Other than that SFC has no experience in using aircraft. So, they will have to start learning now on IAF jets and maybe have their own jets in 10 or 15 years. IAF had used a similar line against the Army in transferring gunships to them, but it did not stick as IA has some helicopter experience.

I hope you are not compromising our security by revealing such things in public domain.
Just a speculation...msp 418K already on russian jets, elm 8882 is compatible with all platforms wired for litening III pods... hence both systems are compatible... tested part is speculation/mystery etc.. take what you can from this

Hint: MSP-418K and ELM 8882 are compatible and tested on the MKI.
Both are of similar capability. While diversification is good, a more advanced SAP-14 would be a better option.

Rumoured to deliver more power than the ALQ-99E's 6 KW.

Now all we need is 3 of those with an Israeli comm jammer and a jamming receiver and we are set.

Btw, it is EL/L 8222. Even I used to call it EL/M earlier.

There is the Israeli ELL-8251 for stand off jamming.

http://www.iai.co.il/sip_storage/FILES/9/36129.pdf

Anyway the MSP418K is a 500W jammer, it is a compact version meant for Mig-29. We may see it in the Mig-29UPG.

Also, SAP-14 EJ(Escort or stand off jammer) and SPJ SAP-518 are already integrated on the Russian prototypes of the MKI.

The ELL 8222 is a SPJ, so no Growler like function there.
