The strongest typhoon to hit Asia this year caused landslides in the Philippines and flooding in Taiwan on Saturday as it appeared headed toward the densely populated Pearl River Delta area of China, with the financial center of Hong Kong preparing for possible business shutdowns at the start of the workweek.

China's National Meteorological Center issued a red alert — the highest-level warning — with the storm, called Super Typhoon Usagi, on a path to hit Guangdong Province, the industrial powerhouse at the heart of the Pearl River Delta. Coastal Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces were also covered by the alert.

Closing down Hong Kong will have serious ramification on the world economy.

Rest of China will survive since they have money and will bounce back.

If a nation can weather the Cultural Revolution that wiped out millions and the Tienanmen Square, they are a resilient people and no typhoon can bring them down!

Typhoon Usagi Bears Down on Hong Kong, Threatens China - Bloomberg

Hong Kong is bracing for possible floods and thousands of travelers are stranded in the city and across the region as Typhoon Usagi moves toward southern China after battering Taiwan.

More than 400 flights have been affected, with Cathay Pacific Airways (293) Ltd., Hong Kong's biggest carrier, canceling flights. The storm, the most powerful to threaten the city since Severe Typhoon Utor in August, is about 260 kilometers (161 miles) east of Hong Kong, the observatory said.

Usagi will disrupt travel as people in the China region try to return home at the end of a long holiday weekend to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival. Residents in Hong Kong are emptying shelves at supermarkets, as they prepare for the heavy rain and flooding predicted by the observatory.

...

Usagi dumped as much as 70 centimeters of rain in Taiwan's east yesterday, left nine people injured and disrupted more than 100 flights before moving away from the island, the Central Emergency Operation Center said today. More than 3,000 people were evacuated, it said.

Shipping between China and Taiwan was partially suspended as Usagi heads toward China's coast, the official Xinhua news agency reported. All lines from Quanzhou to Kinmen were canceled yesterday and most from Xiamen to Kinmen were halted, Xinhua said.

Air China Ltd. (601111) canceled 148 flights today as airports in Xiamen, Shantou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macau were affected. It may adjust more flights depending on weather conditions.

Hong Kong raised its third-highest storm signal as Severe Typhoon Usagi approached, with the city braced for floods and hundreds of flights canceled.

The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted its No. 8 Storm Signal at 6:40 p.m. local time, with Usagi forecast to pass 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of the city toward China, the nearest a typhoon of this magnitude has come to the former British colony this year.

Thousands of people were evacuated by the Chinese government from coastal areas in its Fujian province as storms knocked out power lines, while travelers were stranded around the region with more than 430 flights affected at Hong Kong airport. Banks and the Hong Kong stock market will be closed in the morning should Signal 8 remain in force past 9 a.m.

"It's probably the worst weekend ever," Jessica Coelho, a Hong Kong-based human resources executive who's stranded in Singapore, said by phone today. "It's a nightmare trying to get back. Everyone is trying to get on a plane home."

The storm, the most powerful to threaten Hong Kong since Severe Typhoon Utor in August, is about 160 kilometers east-northeast of the city and is moving west-northwest at about 20 kilometers an hour, the weather bureau said at 7 p.m. local time. The city has recorded maximum sustained winds of 99 kilometers an hour.

Killer Typhoon Usagi Batters Southern China, Hong Kong - WSJ.com

A powerful typhoon swept through China's southern Guangdong province on Sunday, killing at least 25 people and prompting the cancellation of hundreds of flights, before being downgraded to a tropical storm on Monday morning, officials said.

Typhoon Usagi doused the province's Pearl River Delta region with heavy rains and high winds that blew cars off the road, led to the evacuation of thousands of people and widespread electricity outages.

Hong Kong, the densely packed financial center within the delta, was relieved to be spared the storm's worst affects.

Still, in anticipation of a major weather event, the territory canceled both morning trading sessions of the region's securities and derivatives markets and shut down transportation. Thousands of people tried—with varying success—to leave before the typhoon's expected arrival.
