Strip Lata Mangeshkar of Bharat Ratna, says Congress leader

Mumbai's Congress president Janardan Chandurkar has stirred a row by demanding that the country's highest civilian honours bestowed on those who praise "communal forces" should be withdrawn.

Though he did not name melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, it is apparent that remarks were aimed at her, as the singer had recently said she wanted to see Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi become the Prime Minister.

"All awards and honours bestowed on those who are praising communal forces should be withdrawn," Chandurkar said at a function here.

However, the Congress leader has clarified that he had not named anyone.

"My allegation was not against any individual, but about this tendency (to support communal forces). In our country, the awards are given, the society looks up to these people as an ideal and love these people.

"People love them irrespective of caste and community. If in such a situation, they (the awardees) decide to support communal party, the honour bestowed upon them becomes meaningless," Chandurkar said.

"If such people, who are loved by the society, want to indulge in politics, they should come out and practice politics," the Congress leader said.

At a recent function at Pune, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had found an ardent supporter in Lata Mangeshkar, who said she would like to see him taking the top job.

After Modi inaugurated a new hospital complex named after Lata's late father Deenanath Mangeshkar, the Bharat Ratna recipient had said, "Narendrabhai is like my brother. All of us want to see him become the Prime Minister. On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, I hope our wishes would come true."

    **********************************************

The Congress has really gone berserk with cold fear at the Modi mania that has gripped the Indian public, even though that is not guarantee that it will turn to votes!

How stupid it is to state that the country's highest civilian honours bestowed on those who praise "communal forces" should be withdrawn.

Who is this coot to be sitting on judgement?

If indeed this tendency (to support communal forces) is bad for our democracy, then the Govt should have the gumption to ban them and not become lily livered and leave it to mere rhetoric to be pretentiously secular!

If in our country, as the person says, the awards are given, the society looks up to these people as an ideal and love these people. What makes him believe that Lata Mangheshkar is not loved by the people? In fact she is known India wide, and he is possibly not known beyond his local Congress circle.

In fact, this man has insulted Lata, with his fear crazed rantings.

More stupidity from the Congress and it will only boost the BJP chances!

I believe Sachin Tendulkar is getting a Bharat Ratna for his glorious work to keep the Indian Flag high!

I wonder how Sam Maneckshaw, who gave India a decisive victory over Pakistan got left out. He has and is still keeping the Indian pride and Flag flying high!

Lata Mangeshkar was loved by millions before Bharat Ratna and hence she was given the highest honor,

Millions of people loved Modi for his service before Lata Mangeshkar praised him for the same.

You congress was hated by millions for your service to nation and please go ahead and get back Lata Mangeshkar je's award and you will gain some more haters.

And btb is it Congress personal gift ? That they can decide who to give and who not too ? This is Indian govt's Award to it's citizens,

I am not against giving Bharat Ratna to Sachin, he deserves it... but what upsets me is that there are others too who should have also got the same... as you have mentioned Sam Maneckshaw so do Dhyan Chand for his contribution to hockey... there are others too..

I see a political motive behind giving the award to Sachin by Congress and I will not be surprised if they put pressure on Sachin in next general election to campaign and stand on a Congress ticket.

I admire Tendulkar a lot and have been doing so since childhood. I am extremely proud of his contribution to cricket but there are also other people who rightly deserve this award. Just like you said Sam Maneckshaw is equally deserving. Had it not been for him, we wouldn't even have got the chance to watch Tendulkar play. Also, I think Viswanathan Anand deserves to get the Padma Bhushan at least.

An award is an award only, period.

There are those who bring more glory to the award than the other way around.

Gems like Rao, lataji, sachin, APJ, amartya,cv raman, MSS, Bhimsen, VBP,LBS,SR,PRS,UBK,AVB,JRD,SR and a few more , got it on sheer merit, there are others whose contribution to nation building has not been earth shattering

The list is heavily loaded in favour of politicians with no military man adorning it. Sachin is the first sportsman.

Let us once give it to the Unknown Soldier(sailor & airman included) who without media frenzy or public glare with huge responsibility on his shoulders goes about doing his duty everyday, with cheer, courage and conviction.

    Out of 42 declared, 21(50 %) are politicians of all hues ( incl 12 ex Presidents/PM's) ,06 are singers/actors/film makers.03 are foreigners.

Just wish our nation was more concerned about men who do a man's work and get things done.

He is the same a**ehole who was booked by the EC for violating the poll code of conduct, on the eve of 2009 elections, for distributing money to people to vote in favour of the congress.
