SSGN Kazan: First Radically New Sub in Russian Navy

Lead nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine SSGN Kazan being built under modernized Project 885M Yasen-M by Sevmash shipyard for Russian Navy will become the first fourth-generation nuclear submarine with absolutely new technical outfit having no analogs in national military shipbuilding, reported ITAR-TASS referring to an insider in defense industry.

"In contrast to fourth-generation strategic subs Yury Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky [Project 955 Borei] with only 40% of newly applied equipment, all systems of the multipurpose SSGN Kazan will be absolutely new, never used before. I mean radically new hi-tech equipment having no analogs either in Soviet or in Russian shipbuilding", said the source.

"Technically, SSGN Kazan will be comparable to the most hi-tech and expensive American Sea Wolf attack submarine, and even outclass her in silence and some other parameters", said the source reminding that the US had shut down production of those subs due to expensiveness.

The key weapon planned for 855M are the Zircon-S hypersonic cruise missile with manouvering warhead and a range of ~ 1000 km the first test of it is planned for by the end of this year.

No the exact design bureau working on Zircon-S has not been reveled but considering its range its a project of strategic nature so this is not Brahmos-2.

Brahmos-2 is being worked by NPO-Mash and DRDO ( Brahmos Corp ) and it would be a tactical missile keeping MTCR limit in mind.

Brahmos-2 will be first tested in 2017 and Zircon-S as reveled by Russian official will be first tested by end of this year.

IIRC Brahmos 2 is not under any MTCR as Brahmos corp is the developing agency ? And how much does Yakhont differ from Brahmos ?

Are we talking about the same sub...
Russian Tech Stumbles Again
by James Dunnigan
September 1, 2012

The new Russian Graney (Yasen) class SSGN (nuclear powered cruise missile sub) has been delayed for the second time this year. Recent sea trials revealed that the nuclear reactor did not produce the required power and that the ability of the boat to remain quiet while under water was not working. An underpowered and noisy sub is not acceptable and the navy is demanding that the builder make it all better before 2014. That may not be possible because during the 1990s lack of work, and money, meant that most of the best people left the firms that produced nuclear subs and their complex components. Those left behind have produced a growing list of embarrassing failures.
Earlier, undisclosed problems with the first Graney have postponed it from entering service for at least a year. That will mean, if the latest delay is the last one, the first Graney will enter service twenty years after construction began. These problems are not restricted to the Graney, as other new subs are also encountering numerous construction and design problems.

In early 2011, the fifty man crew of the first Graney took their boat to sea, or at least around the harbor, for the first time. Sea trials were to begin three months later but first the sub took baby steps to ensure that everything worked. These harbor trials were seen as a major progress. Things went downhill again after that, with a growing number of delays as more and more problems were encountered.

Russian submarine building has been on life support since the Cold War ended in 1991. Many subs under construction at the end of the Cold War were cancelled, and the few that avoided that spent a decade or more waiting for enough money to get finished. The first Graney crew was put together six years ago and has been training, and waiting, ever since. The crew now continues training on their new boat, which was supposed to have entered service by now.

Three years ago construction began on a second Graney. Russia plans to complete six boats of this class by the end of the decade. Construction of the first Graney class boat, the Severodvinsk, began in 1993, but lack of money led to numerous delays. Originally, the Severodvinsk was to have entered service in 1998. Work on the Severodvinsk was resumed eight years ago. If work is not interrupted the second Graney class boat should be ready in less than five years. With the current situation, better make that six or seven years.

The 9,500 ton Graneys are armed with 24 cruise missiles, as well as eight 650mm (25.6 inch) torpedo tubes. Some of the cruise missiles can have a range of over 3,000 kilometers, while others are designed as "carrier killers." The larger torpedo tubes also make it possible to launch missiles from them, as well as larger and more powerful torpedoes. The Graneys are having new "smart" (target seeking) torpedoes designed and built for them. But even these new torpedoes are having development problems and may be cancelled.

The Graneys are highly automated, which is why there is a crew less than half the 134 needed to run the new U.S. Virginia class boats. The Graney design is based on the earlier Akula and Alfa class SSNs. Russia had originally planned to build 30 Graneys but now eight seems the most optimistic goal.

The delays are because no component/derivative from previous generation submarines are reused, everything is developed from scratch :)

A bit of etymology.
Kazan is derived from a Tatar word - "Qazan", which means a "Boiler" or "Cauldron".
Kazan is also the name of a major Russian city in west-central Russia.

Sounded like the delay was because the Russian Navy did not want them because they werent any good. Maybe they are Monkey models to be sold to India.

The delays are because of many new systems being tested that do not exist on previous SSN like the Akula class.

The design has little to do with Akula design because the Yasen Class have moved their sail closer to the bow and have VLS system.

Also as an official said the number of test prior to commissioning needed on new Yasen class have grown 6x times compared to 3x times number of test needed to be done on submarine of previous generation.

New Sub launched weapons like Kalbir-NK , Oniks and Physics-1 torpedo are being tested for Yasen

Actually No as the MTCR prohibits the Russians from passing to us technology or designs for a missile for more than 300km.we can increase the range of the Brahmos provided we develop the engine tech ourselves.
