Hard to say how track will play: Dhoni - Top Stories - Sri Lanka in India, 2009 - Series & Tournaments - Cricket - Sports - The Times of India

Hard to say how track will play: Dhoni
TNN 24 November 2009, 01:11am IST

KANPUR: Indian skipper MS Dhoni feels the Green Park pitch is very different from the one at Ahmedabad.

Excerpts from the pre-match press conference...

On the pitch: There is a lot of grass but the base is pretty dry. It's difficult to predict exactly how it will play. The other thing is that it is a lot cooler than Ahmedabad. So in the morning there will be help for the faster bowlers. The outfield is not lush green and I believe reverse swing will also come into play at some stage. We are also expecting the wicket to break up and help the spinners later on. But much will depend on how much nip and bounce they get.

On the team combination: I don't disclose the playing XI. That has been an issue with the media but that's how we go. All are good enough to play. When you announce the XI, the rest of the guys are a bit disheartened and not really match-ready in case they have to be drafted in.
On the toss: The first session will be important. In Kanpur, every day there will be a bit of help for the fast bowlers. More often, you will opt to bat first because, okay, the first hour may be crucial but if you get through that, it is always easy to keep batting. You have to weigh everything and then decide.

On the morale of the bowlers: If you are in a situation like Motera, of course it is a bit difficult to pep up the bowlers. They are aggressive players who love taking wickets and when they don't see any assistance from the wicket, they get a bit disheartened. But that is part and parcel of the game. As I have been saying, that was not the flattest track, I have seen flatter tracks.

On Gautam Gambhir: He's a great character. Whatever the conditions may be, whatever the situation may be, he plays according to what is needed. He can shift gears. He is one of those players who uses his feet and the depth of the crease very well and takes the spinners on. He has been really good in the last one-and-half years. He has been very consistent and whenever you need him, he has been there. It's great to have a batsman like that in the side. Once he is set, he just goes on for a long innings and that's what is important in Test cricket.

On Sehwag's approach: You don't want to say much to Virender Sehwag because that's the kind of cricket he plays. That's what he is known for. If you recall the Chennai game, he is more of an aggressor. Even if he makes 200, he will score them quickly. He is not the kind of batsman who will stick at the wicket and take two days to get his runs. He looks to get on with the game, he tries to put pressure on the bowlers. We just want him to play his natural game. He is a very experienced player, so I don't really need to say much to him.

On his journey as a captain: It's a process. The team changes every now and then, you miss players because of injuries. The good thing is you always have experienced players in the side who can help you out. The journey has been good so far, I am just hoping that it gets better and better. International cricket is all about the tough moments you go through.

Sehwag, Gambhir lead Indian run-feast - Top Stories - Sri Lanka in India, 2009 - Series & Tournaments - Cricket - Sports - The Times of India

Sehwag, Gambhir lead Indian run-feast

Santosh Suri, TNN 25 November 2009, 12:25am IST

KANPUR: Give them an inch and they will take a mile. That's what Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir did at the Green Park stadium on Tuesday.

The former got a reprieve on the fourth ball of the match in a mix-up between the two Jayawardenes behind the stumps and the Indian opener made the Sri Lankans pay heavily. Sehwag had edged a wide delivery by Chanaka Welegedara and it was going straight to Mahela Jayawardene at first slip. As his namesake, wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, leapt for it, an unsighted Mahela spilled the chance with Sehwag yet to open his account.

That was the defining moment of the day, and probably the match too, as Gambhir and Sehwag blitzed to a double century stand to grab the initiative for the hosts in the second Test. Had Sehwag departed in the first over, the memories of Ahmedabad Test would have come rushing back to haunt the Indian top-order, which had tumbled in the first session there. But the dropped catch gave the Delhi stars a reason to celebrate: they clobbered the bowling and put on 233 for the first wicket, which is the best at the venue, scoring at over five an over.

Barring the first hour, when there was some help from the pitch, the bowlers toiled in vain as India piled on 417 for the loss of just two wickets, both falling to veteran Muttiah Muralitharan. One would assume that having posted their biggest opening day score, the home team has ensured safety in this Test. The fate of the match now depends mostly on how the Sri Lankan batsmen fare as also on the purchase the bowlers will get on the final two days.

Meanwhile, there is little doubt who the star of the day was. Gambhir, the new Mr. Consistent of Indian cricket, has been piling on the runs with an amazing regularity. On Tuesday, he collected his fourth century in as many Tests and his last nine matches have brought him an amazing seven centuries. And it is not just the number of runs he scores but the manner in which Gambhir dominates the bowling that catches the eye.

The Indian openers had a plan for the Lankan spin trio who came on after the pacers failed to make early inroads. The two did not allow the spinners to settle down and attacked them from the first ball. Sehwag hit Ajantha Mendis for two sixes while Gambhir struck successive fours off them. Even before lunch, when the score was 131 for no loss, the writing was on the wall.

After the departure of Sehwag, caught off Muralitharan, for 131, there was no let-up for the Lankans as Dravid joined Gambhir in another big stand. Under pressure, the fielding too wilted and there were numerous misfields.

India brought in Sreesanth and Pragyan Ojha for Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra while Sri Lanka went for a spin threesome, adding Mendis to Murali and Herath.

Dhoni backs bowlers ahead of Kanpur Test - Top Stories - Sri Lanka in India, 2009 - Series & Tournaments - Cricket - Sports - The Times of India

Dhoni backs bowlers ahead of Kanpur Test
IANS 23 November 2009, 07:37pm IST

KANPUR: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni backed his bowlers ahead of the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka that starts on Tuesday.

Asked whether there would be any change in the bowling department, Dhoni said: "It has always been an issue in the media but you have to wait till tomorrow. Ishant (Sharma) is back in rhythm, as we saw in Ahmedabad. He is putting in a lot of efforts and the improvement is there to see. Sreesanth has bowled well in the nets too. He bowled with great pace and swung it a lot but we will have to wait till tomorrow."

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was absent from Monday's practice and Dhoni said: "Harbhajan is fine. It was an optional practice; we leave it to the players to decide how they want to prepare."

Dhoni also backed Virender Sehwag's batting. Sehwag is getting starts but is failing to convert them into big shots and it seems he lacks discretion in shot selection.

"You don't really want to tell a player like him what to do. That is how he plays the game and is known for. He is more of an aggressor and is not the kind of guy who will stick to the wicket for one-and-half days. He is always looking to get on with the game. We want him to play his natural game," said Dhoni.

On opener Gautam Gambhir, who scored a fine match-saving century in first Test, Dhoni said: "He (Gambhir) is a great character. Thrust him into any situation and he will play accordingly. He can shift gears easily and uses his feet well against the spinners.

"He has been consistently in good form over the past one-and-half years and whenever the team needed, he has delivered. Once he sets himself well, he goes for big innings."

Motera has been disappointing but the Dhoni hoped that the Green Park pitch would produce some results.

"Compared to Motera, the pitch here looks different. It has got some grass and the base is dry. But you cannot really predict how the wicket will play the next five days. Here the weather is cooler and as we know, initially there will be some help for the seamers. The outfield is not lush, so there will be some reverse swing for the fast bowlers. The pitch will break as well. Overall, I feel it will be a better wicket for the bowlers," Dhoni said.

Asked about the toss, Dhoni said: "First sessions will be important. Everyday there will be a bit of help for the pacers. Even in ODIs, we see the first 30-45 minutes are important. Now here you have to decide whether to bat first and go hard at the first one hour. Once you see through the first hour, it becomes easy to keep batting. Or you bat in the fourth innings and be at the receiving end of a pitch where the ball will be turning."

Third day of the test match. Its going to be the decisive day of the match. if india takes the march today, it will win the test. If sri lanka hold out, it will head for a draw. India has to utilize the first half hour well as whatever assistance is there in the pitch for the fast bowlers will vanish later on. A couple of wickets in that period esp of Sangakara and Mahela will put india in the drivers seat. Dhoni will have to be aggressive with his field and bowling changes and not allow the match to drift at any stage. This game is indias to win.

Yusuf, you were right through your observation , the first hour of the play was essential , the fighting of Sri Lankan batsmen ended by Srisanth by his performance, it is now only a matter of time before the innings get wrapped up, and India gets 1-0 , unassailable lead in the series.

The Canadian Press: India closes on victory in 2nd Test, claiming 14 Sri Lanka wickets on Day 3

India closes on victory in 2nd Test, claiming 14 Sri Lanka wickets on Day 3

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 12 hours ago

KANPUR, India — Sri Lanka is staring at defeat after losing 14 wickets and being forced to follow on during a dire third day of the second Test against India.

India paceman Shantakumaran Sreesanth marked his return to the Test team by snaring 5-75 to help bowl out the visitors for 229 in their first innings.

After following on, Sri Lanka was 57-4 in its second innings at stumps, still 356 runs from making India bat again, after the hosts made 642 in their first innings.

Wilting under pressure, Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan (11), Tharanga Paranavitana (20), Mahela Jayawardene (10) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (11) in the last session as India's bowlers tightened their grip on the match. Thilan Samaraweera (1 not out) and Angelo Mathews (2 not out) will resume Friday with the task of trying to stave off what appears almost certain defeat.

Playing his first Test for two years, Sreesanth troubled the Sri Lanka batsmen with his swing, claiming five wickets in an innings for only the second time in his 15-test career.

He dismissed opener Paranavitana (38), Sangakkara (44) and Samaraweera (2) in the first session, and went on to add the wickets of Prasanna Jayawardene (39) and Rangana Herath (11) to his haul after lunch.

Debutant left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (2-37) and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (2-54) claimed the other wickets Thursday after the tourists resumed at a decent overnight score of 66-1.

Sri Lanka was quickly in trouble on Day 3, when Sreesanth removed overnight batsmen Paranavitana and Sangakkara.

Paranavitana was caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni after adding just eight runs to his overnight score of 30, while Sangakkara played a seaming Sreesanth delivery onto the stumps.

Prasanna Jayawardene contributed 39 in his 60-run partnership for the sixth wicket before becoming Sreesanth's fourth victim, nicking an outswinger to wicketkeeper Dhoni, while Rangana Herath soon followed, bowled for 11.

Mathews (13) was bowled by Harbhajan, and Ojha claimed his first Test wicket when Mahela Jayawardene (47) was caught by Tendulkar in trying to loft a shot over mid-on. Jayawardene had a lucky escape earlier, edging a ball between wicketkeeper and slip to get off the mark.

Ojha went on to trap Muttiah Muralitharan (6) lbw after tea and Sri Lanka's innings ended when Harbhajan got an lbw decision against Chanaka Welegedara (7).

Sreesanth returned to trouble Sri Lanka again in the second innings, inducing an edge from opening batsman Tillakeratne to Dhoni.

Part-time spinner Virender Sehwag (1-4) trapped Paranavitana lbw and Harbhajan (1-14) bowled Sangakkara, while Mahela Jayawardene got run out as to leave Sri Lanka in tatters.

The first Test of the three-match series ended in a dreary draw last week.

Sreesanth and Ojha really bowled well. India was till now playing with one hand tied down because we have no bowling arsenal. Our bowlers used in the earlier match and last series have been underperforming. Bowlers like Harbhajan, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan...etc have been unable to trouble batsmen, consequently India had to chase big scores or concede lead/victory even after scoring big. Once, we had two good bowlers in the form of Sreesanth and Ojha, everything started happening.

I have a feel we will win the match. Sri lanka has two days to surpass our team's score and it's gonna be very difficult for them.

Srikkanth showers praise on Sreesanth

STAFF WRITER 19:40 HRS IST

Chennai, Nov 27 (PTI) Selection committee chairman K Srikkanth today said paceman S Sreesanth's remarkable comeback augurs well for the Indian cricket team as he could prove to be a lethal weapon in Mahendra Singh Dhoni's armoury.

Sreesanth, who returned to the Indian side after 19 months in wilderness, played a major role in India's win over Sri Lanka in the second Test and Srikkanth was effusive in his praise of the Kerala pacer.

"I must congratulate Sreesanth for his performance after a long lay-off. His comeback should augur well for the country. He bowled to his potential. His late out-swingers are always dangerous. Once he finds his rhythm, Sreesanth is a dangerous bowler and difficult for even a settled batsman to negotiate," he told PTI.

Srikkanth also credited the victory to team work.

AFP: Fading Murali magic worries Sri Lanka

Fading Murali magic worries Sri Lanka

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

KANPUR, India — The indifferent form of spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan is a cause of worry going into the series decider in Mumbai, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said here on Friday.

"It does bother us when our star bowler does not pick too many wickets when we know he can," Sangakkara said after Sri Lanka were thrashed by an innings and 144 runs in the second Test against India to go down 1-0 in the series.

"But he still is our best bowler and we've got to back him 100 percent because he will come good at some point, hopefully in the next game."

The 37-year-old off-spinner conceded a whopping 175 runs off his 37 overs while picking up two wickets as India galloped away to amass 642 runs in their first innings at the Green Park stadium.

Muralitharan, the world's top Test wicket-taker with 788 scalps, has been Sri Lanka's leading bowler for several years now, but there has been talk of his waning magic over the last three years.

He finished the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad with figures of 3 for 221 from 63.5 overs, of which only one victim was a top-order batsman.

The bowler also struggled on the last day, finishing wicketless for only the seventh time in the second innings, but the first time when he had bowled 20 overs or more.

Muralitharan is playing his last Test series overseas, after having announced in July his intention to quit the longest form of the game next year owing to a troublesome knee.

With a Test win on Indian soil still eluding the Sri Lankans, Sangakkara can only hope for Muralitharan to find form before the third and final Test begins in Mumbai on December 2.

"We still have got a lot to achieve in Mumbai," said Sangakkara.

"We can still draw the series 1-1. So there is great motivation for us. We are definitely disappointed but you have to take responsibility and move ahead."

India's Gambhir to miss final Sri Lanka Test

(AFP) – 11 hours ago

NEW DELHI — India's in-form opener Gautam Gambhir will miss the third and final Test against Sri Lanka next week due to his sister's wedding, the Indian cricket board said on Friday.

The Delhi left-hander has hit centuries in each of his last four Tests, including knocks of 114 and 167 in the first two matches of the current series.

The family wedding falls on December 3, the second day of the third Test which opens at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The selectors did not name a replacement for Gambhir and reduced the present 15-man squad by one, the board said in a statement.

Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay, who played one Test against Australia last year and is part of the squad, is expected to come in for Gambhir.

India squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Virender Sehwag, Murali Vijay, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Venkatsai Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Subramaniam Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha.
