A Cabinet meeting chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa approved a policy to consider nuclear power as an option to meet future energy demands of the island nation. A Government statement on the proceedings of the Cabinet said the government is expected to solicit technical cooporation from the International Automatic Energy Agency (IAEA) through the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Cabinet gave a green signal to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with help from the Government of Republic of Korea and submit the same for approval. It also authorised the setting up of a Steering Committee to co-opt suitable experts from the relevant line Ministries and Agencies to the Project Implementation Committee and set up a Project Implementation Committee.
