Sri Lankan court imposes travel ban on former defence secretary Rajapaksa

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, brother of the former president, has his passport taken as part of investigation into large arsenal of weapons found in ship

A Sri Lankan court on Monday banned the former president's brother, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, from leaving the country as police probe private arsenals set up during the previous regime's decade in power.

A magistrate in the southern port city of Galle impounded former powerful defence secretary Rajapaksa's passport along with those of three others, police said in a statement.

"Police investigating the Avant-Garde Security Service floating armoury case sought and secured a ban on their travel abroad," the statement said, naming the four individuals involved.

Shortly after former president Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated at 8 January elections, partly on corruption and cronyism claims, police in Galle found a ship carrying more than 3,000 automatic weapons, including machine guns.

Investigators have been trying to locate thousands of weapons they say have disappeared from the inventories of the island's security forces and are thought to have been transferred to individuals.

Avant-Garde Security Service has said its legally obtained armoury had been authorised by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to enable the private company to carry out armed escorts of commercial ships.

The new government of President Maithripala Sirisena insists Rajapaksa did not have the legal authority to approve such private hauls.

A police source said the former defence secretary has been questioned in Colombo as part of the ongoing investigation and the travel ban was sought because they need to interview him further.

The former president's brothers and other family members held key positions in the previous government. Mahinda Rajapaksa's younger brother Basil, who had been economic development minister, left the island soon after the president's defeat.

It appears that the Rajapaksa family ran Sri Lanka as their personal fief and with Mafia like credential.

Fate seems to be catching up and having them exposed as the scoundrels that they were.

Rajapaksa was after the blood of Gen Fonseka, but the tables have turned
Gen. Fonseka acquitted of all charges
arges.

The Attorney General indicted the two accused on 41 charges that also included charges of mutiny, insubordination and harbouring army deserters during the 2010 Presidential election. Gen. Fonseka and de Silva pleaded not guilty to all 41 charges. The civic rights and army titles of Gen. Fonseka were also restored following a directive issued by the President last month. The Defence Ministry confirmed that Gen. Fonseka is entitled to his rank of Four Star General, medals, pension and other privileges which he was stripped of in 2010, by two Army tribunals before he was cashiered and imprisoned.

They seem to be preparing grounds for war crimes investigation.

These allegations are just political vendetta. Gota was cleared from this particular allegation about the weapon ship just few days ago.

Don't elate too much. People are still behind the people who has served Sri Lanka well.

OK so it is political vendetta.

And Sri Lankans are cool to it.

No protest no nothing, right?

It's just a travel ban not a actual arrest. I suspect a uprising if Gota was apprehended.
