Two courts in Sri Lanka on Wednesday extended till August 28 the remand of 65 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested by naval personnel of the island nation last month for reportedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

The fishermen from Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Akkaraipettai had put out to sea on July 30 when they were arrested by Sri Lankan Naval personnel, officials said.

The fishermen, lodged in prisons in Paruthithurai and Trikonamalai, were produced before magistrates of courts in those towns on Wednesday, who extended their remand till August 28, they said.

What they want to investigate? It is clear case of harassing Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan kangaroo courts.

Hello dude, please let me know how you can call them thieves?

Hello dude, please let me know if they stole anything, let alone fish.

Also, please let me know if it is possible for uneducated fisherman to identify international waters?

Please let me know if it is possible for the Srilankan Navy to let these fishermen go with just a warning.

That is a separate discussion to prove if they were in their own waters or yours. The point is why remand of poor fishermen.

Wonderful treatment of Indian Fisher folk by Srilankan authorities.

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu: A group of fishermen from Tamil Nadu were on Tuesday allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan naval men while they were fishing near Katchatheevu, fisheries department officials said.

The fishermen from this coastal area had ventured for fishing in 20 boats, officials said, adding, the Lankan naval men allegedly attacked them with ropes and steel pipes causing extensive damage to their fishing nets and communication equipment.

The officials, quoting a boat-owner, said they reportedly even stuffed sugar in the engine of one of the mechanized boats and paralysed it.

The fishermen alleged the naval personnel also seized the catch and warned that they would open fire next time if they were seen near Katchatheevu, an islet in the Palk Straits ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974.

This is nothing new incident. Indian fishermen enter to Sri Lankan waters, they are doing an illegal act.
If they are uneducated then it's Indian government's responsibility to educate them. Just provide GPS units for each boat.

Is it that god damn easy to provide every uneducated fishermen with GPS?

What is highly questionable about croosing maritime border, why can't they be sent back with a warning?

why it is difficult to provide 1000 GPS units to TN fishermen who are fishing near our maritime borders?

If they are respecting the warnings then we don't have to face this incident daily.

There is no issue if India and TN governments take action against these fishermen. Why not deploying Indian navy or coast guard units to these areas?

Agree with Kito here. It is India's responsibility to ensure that the fishermen have the right navigation aids and training required to adhere to International Maritime Laws. Sri Lanka is fully within its jurisdiction to prosecute these fishermen.

Instead of our rhetoric against SL, we should be questioning our government and politicians who use this as a political issue. If they really cared, they would have done something useful and not raise "humanitarian grounds" on people breaking rules.

SL fishermen don't cross into Indian waters? Why dont we shoot them or attack with sickles and stones as like SL navy?

Indian navy or coast guard cant do that. perhaps, SL is a so-called friendly-nation

Our navy isn't carrying stones n funny stuff. They have cute weapons fitted in their boats. According to SL law they have permission to shoot.

Thieves? every time there is an aggression by your army we know what you do steal fishing net boat engine and even petrol and other little valuables that those poor fisherman has, If you're so perfect educated, Law binding, Respected army can do this why cant a poor uneducated fisherman steal the fish for the ocean for a respectable living? Everyone can now see who the thieves here are.

Also what is your water and our water is a dispute, We provided you Kachathevu as a friendly gesture which is the highest fish growth area and the area used by fisherman to rest and make their fishing net ready for next move now you dont allow us in that area expect for 1 day during Mother Mary Church festival not sure till when you guys going to demolish that church as you do for other place of worship in your real land.
And even last year you arrested close to 70 persons including womens saying the licence for the boat they came to church is expired as if they bought nukes in with them.
There is no issue if India and TN governments take action against these fishermen. Why not deploying Indian navy or coast guard units to these areas?
We take action when we find wrong not just because you think fishing fish by fisherman is a crime in disputed area why is that your fisherman also not come and fish in these area ? Hooo ya when was the last time you guys did hard job for living ?

And if we deploy Indian navy or CG in that are as you suggest you must be warned, They won't be watching their fellow country man getting killed by respect less army of yours so called cute a$$ navy will be fu(k3d so don't wish for such thing unless you really want to watch you're a$$ w00p3d.
But keep on harassing our poor fisherman and your wish will be coming soon when our central congress politician get their spine straight.
Indian law does not apply in our waters. Use your cute weapons in your waters!
No Law apply in your land where was your law when lakhs of civilians was butchered and raped ?

It's not long before you regret your actions wait and see.
