Sports ministry recommends Dhyan Chand for Bharat Ratna, Sachin out of race : Cricket News - India Today
++
.
.
The sports ministry on Wednesday recommended the name of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand for the Bharat Ratna, India's highest
civilian honour.
However, Sachin Tendulkar has been left out of the race. The reason - the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not sent the Master Blaster's name for the coveted award.
The Board's vice-president Rajiv Shukla tried to reason, saying that it's the 'ministry that decides on the names and not the BCCI'.
Also, Tenzing Norgay, undoubtedly the most famous Indian mountain climber, who reached the summit of Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary, figures in the ministry's list of probables for the Bharat Ratna.
Meanwhile, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly told Aaj Tak in Adelaide that age could have been a factor here.
"Both Dhyan Chand and Tenzing Norgay belonged to a different age and this could have led to the ministry's decision,[/b]" said Ganguly.
