Record-breaking Tendulkar sets up victory

(UKPA) – 4 days ago

Sachin Tendulkar smashed a record-breaking double century as India scored an emphatic 153-run victory over South Africa in the second one-day international at Gawalior, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 200, the first ever double century in ODIs, and built partnerships with Dinesh Karthik (79), Yusuf Pathan (36) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (68no) as India finished with a mammoth total of 401 for three.

South Africa stuttered with their reply and although AB de Villiers made a brave unbeaten 114, the visitors were bowled out for 248 in 42.5 overs.

India, with Tendulkar at the forefront, were merciless with the bat, despite the early loss of Virender Sehwag (nine), as they made the most of Dhoni's rare success with the toss.

Tendulkar reached the mark off only 140 deliveries, hitting 25 fours - the most by a batsman in a single innings - and three sixes along the way, before reaching his double century with a single off Charl Langeveldt in the final over.

South Africa, who hold the record for the world's highest chase in one-day internationals, began in poor fashion as they lost Gibbs (seven) in the third over and thereafter suffered blows regularly.

Pinch-hitter Roelof van der Merwe (12) lasted only 12 deliveries, Hashim Amla made 34 before he was Sreesanth's second victim, while Kallis made just 11 when he dragged a delivery from Ashish Nehra onto his stumps.

Alviro Petersen was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 11 and JP Duminy was trapped in front for a first ball duck by Pathan before Mark Boucher and De Villiers added 31 runs for the seventh wicket, but Pathan broke that stand by winning a lbw verdict against Boucher.

De Villiers then continued to offer stiff resistance and reached his fifth ODI century, but Nehra took a superb catch at mid-on to remove last-man Langeveldt (12) and bring up victory.

Jadeja and Sreesanth finished with three wickets apiece.

Proteas power to consolation win

(UKPA) – 1 day ago

Commanding centuries from Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers helped South Africa steam to a 90-run victory over India in the final one-dayer in Ahmedabad.

Loots Bosman (68) and Hashim Amla (87) gave the Proteas a flying start with a 113-run stand for the opening wicket, while Kallis (104 not out) and De Villiers (102 not out) ground India's attack into the dust as the visitors finished with a solid 365 for two.

Virat Kohli (57), Rohit Sharma (48) and Suresh Raina (49) all got starts, but South Africa's bowlers were too good as the home side were bowled out for 275 inside 45 overs.

Bosman, back at the top of the order after being left out in Gwalior, blazed away against India's inexperienced attack and brought up his second ODI half-century with a six off Yusuf Pathan's first delivery, needing only 37 deliveries to reach the mark. He eventually perished attempting the fifth six of his innings, miscuing Pathan to Ravindra Jadeja at long-off.

Amla, far less belligerent, had by then constructed another fine innings, easily rotating the strike and finding the boundaries when width was offered. He went on to reach his seventh ODI half-century and had combined with Kallis to put on 79 for the second wicket when he top-edged a slog sweep off Jadeja to debutant Murali Vijay at deep square leg.

South Africa reached 200 in the 35th over and De Villiers helped the visitors shift gears by hitting Shantha Sreesanth for three boundaries in four deliveries, while Kallis too accelerated smoothly.

Kallis reached his century - his 17th in ODIs - with consecutive sixes off Sreesanth, while De Villiers raised his sixth ODI ton and his second on the trot by smashing Rohit for a four and six off successive deliveries.

India's chase began promisingly, but the home side were soon struggling as Dale Steyn snared Dinesh Karthik (11) early and new-ball partner Lonwabo Tsotsobe removed Vijay (25) early in the sixth over.

Rohit and Kohli then revived the chase with a 95-run stand for the third wicket, but Tsotsobe returned to remove Rohit and Steyn destroyed India's resistance with the wickets of Kohli and dangerman Mahendra Singh Dhoni (nine) - both caught behind by Mark Boucher - in the same over.

The home side then slipped further to 179 for six with the demise of Pathan (five), but Suresh Raina (49) and Jadeja (36) gave the home side a glimmer of hope with a 54-run stand for the seventh wicket. However, the chase all but ended once Raina was prised out, Steyn and Tsotsobe ending with three wickets apiece.
