India may soon come out with its series of robotic soldiers to man difficult war zones and save loss of lives along borders.

The move will hoist India into the next level of unmanned fighting league under a project being developed by the DRDO. The robot soliders would be equipped with a keen intelligence to detect a threat from a friend and respond to it in required manner with precision and accuracy. India’s Iron Men can then be deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) to guard Indian borders and adjoining territories.

“It is a new programme and a number of labs are already working in a big way on robotics," said DRDO chief Avinash Chander. The newly-appointed DRDO chief listed the project for development of robotic soldiers as one of his "priority thrust areas" saying that "unmanned warfare in land and air is the future of warfare. Initially, the robotic soldier may be assisting the man."

He said in the initial phase of the project, the robotic soldier would be required to be told by the human soldier to identify an enemy or a combatant but "slowly in due course of time, the iron soldier would be at the front."

It may be recalled that United Nations expert Christof Heyns had recently pushed for a moratorium on testing and use of automated armed robots that can kill targets without needing human command.

Heyns had told the Human Rights Council in Geneva that a decision to allow machines to be deployed to kill human beings worldwide, whatever weapons they use, deserved a collective pause. He even urged the council to set up a high-level panel to report on advances in the development of “lethal autonomous robotics.”

DRDO should watch hollywood movies such as I-Robot (2004), Commander Data in Star Trek: TNG, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Stealth movie (2005) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

Only then Indian armed forces will accept robots (similar to robots as seen in movies mentioned above) from DRDO with high tech intelligence and mobility to guard Line of Control (LOC). :trooper:

DRDO its time for your demise now or atleast govt should make it private-public partnership.

JBH do you really think that Private companies are ready to invest in Defence sector, they need to have deep pockets and gestation period is very long, plus lack of technology, lack of experience and cut throat and deadly competition. Last but not least our Military love foreign maal, foreign agents have made inroads into this sector for decades and decades. They vertically dictate GSQR and ASQR.

If there is a demand there will be a supply :) Private sector through joint ventures can get expertise and also unlike DRDO in pvt sector there is this adage "perform or perish".

DRDO should be there to make strategic missile not to design firearms, tanks etc this model does not work.

bhai saab first tell DRDO to complete projects on which it sitting like hell..

Think realistic and please make things that others are making right now...
DRDO needs to be revamped completely, ask it complete LCA projects by this year, final date else put fines on their projects leads.
    why give them hikes?
new defence policy is good, in make india drdo can collaborate with private firms and make thing.
first create basic thing that today's army has need of then come up with such dreamy projects.

more like demand is met by foreign suppliers, Private sector didnt help, very few example worth telling, like Patka made for Sikh soldiers.

Please understand that you have to put lot of money into R&D for defence, we are not even putting 25% of what other countries have put in. Also remember these guys are doing mostly for their country, with the salaries they are getting with their kind of experience they can easily get jobs in multinational defence companies, also for last many decades not many from IITs have joined DRDO, still they are making stuff, with sanctions etc. It is very easy to say they are not doing this and that.

What is wrong in that? According to some critics 'delay' is the main problem of DRDO then what's wrong in initiating such programs earlier ? Should we wait for PRC to do it before us? Why such prematured criticism ? Let them do whatever they see possible for them :rolleye: though I am not so confident on its success but will give a chance to them.

When Arjun tank started, i thought ok they are making tank, over the years it got delayed and they went for T90, then their was talk of comparative trial, then i saw arjun my self and Arjun beat T90S, when happen then IA still ordered T90 in thousands.

Like wise, LCA is our first attempt, we cant and should not fail in it, in the exercise iron fist, i saw only LCA doing what it was supposed to do. Even after FOC they are going to give token order.........just like in Arjun tank case.

India set to develop killer robot soldiers, says army chief

Bosses at the country’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plan to create super-intelligent robots to fight alongside human troops.
And they believe the android squaddies will be up and running within a DECADE.

    Research ... Avinash Chander
    Youtube
The India Times reports that they could then be deployed in and around the “Line of Control” area of the India-Pakistan border to guard Indian territory against potential attack.
DRDO Director General Avinash Chander said: “We are going to work for robotic soldiers.
“We are going to look for very high level of intelligence in it than what we are talking of today.
“It is a new programme and a number of labs are already working in a big way on robotics.
“Unmanned warfare in land and air is the future of warfare."
The bots would be equipped with special software to help them distinguish between friend and foe and Chandler says they could potentially save human lives, taking on the deadly front-line fighting
He continued: “Initially, the robotic soldier may be assisting the man, but slowly in due course of time, the robotic soldier would be at the front end and the human soldier would be assisting him.”
They would also be able to venture into places human soldiers can’t, like high-radiation zones.
He added: “It will have multiple technologies in terms of communication with team members and ability to recognise an enemy.
“Today, you have neural networks, whenever the soldier tells [the robot] that this is a human solider, he will derive his own logic as to what is the difference between him and others.
“That learning process will keep building up.”

IMHO DRDO will move up a few notches in my estimation of their ability and indeed credibility if :-
they would actually put a date to it !
    sure - it's hard to forsee - but it's their job !
all this "within a decade " business sounds like the LCA project and shifting deadlines
but to be fair , we also shouldnt shift the goalposts for them too !

all in all - godspeed you great guys and gals in DRDO - i sincerely hope you get it accomplished
within the (a) decade as you foresee.
