The extraordinary growth of Asian giants India and China in the past few decades has been mainly due to the 60 years of relative peace and stability in Asia, a top Pentagon official has said.

"This extraordinary growth that we've witnessed and the dynamism in the Asia-Pacific region, and that of China and India in particular, has been made possible by 60 years of peace, stability and prosperity," said Michael Schiffer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for East Asia policy in his remarks at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a Washington-based Think Tank.

"Yes, there have been some significant disruptions to that peace in the region during this period, but on balance, it has been a period of remarkable stability and prosperity, much of it embedded by the security and openness of the global commons and the attendant lattice of international laws, norms and institutions, with much of that traced back to the US presence in the region and our engagement with our allies and partners," he said.

If it is being talked about china alone, one would agree but then its not just peace, there was some smart thinking, hard work and excellent execution.

Peace and india and for decades? when? Infact far from it, least I mention Pakistan and china which at various intervals have gone to war with us and even today india is far from being at peace with itself, there is there are the Maoists, the NE, the Kashmir, and various terrorist factions affiliated to various religious groups all which takes a heavy toll on india’s growth.

That said it is indeed commendable for india to have achieved all that it has given when a lot of resources get sucked in these conflict zones which have nothing much to show in return, add to this the image perception that takes a beating and scares away the prospective investor and least we forget that these conflict zones cover a significant area, people and resources which means a lot of opportunity cost lost as a result.

But yes the point raised is of immense importance, that of peace and if we can make sure for decades to come we can keep our neighbors at bay and make peace within ourselves, india’s growth will be that much more rapid, wholesome and stable.

Now this peaceful neighbor is interfering in many of the areas you mentioned.

i have a very simple thought on this, there has to be a weakness within and only then can it be exploited and if we are giving an opportunity to others, then those who are against us will exploit it against us. it is our responsibility to make sure we cure the ills, now it can be time consuming but that should not mean we just look out side and point fingers just at others.
