The latest is that the Supreme Court has given a tongue in cheek stay to what the Mamata Govt is going in whole hog to implement.

As those who are abreast with the events know, Mamata has got a Bill passed in the WB Assembly that makes the return of land legal. However, interesting to note is that it supersedes the Central Govt Act in vogue which technically it cannot.

Therefore, it is not only an interesting case as far as land allotment is concerned but also it raises a constitutional issue.

    Is Mum right?

First she drove out Tatas. Then dishonestly says that Tata motors have failed to meet deadlines. This firmly and irrevocably drives Tatas out, more might follow suit. Anyway, new industries are ruled out. A tagnant WB it was, and will remain so for a long time.

    Left out.
    Ultra left in.
WB will become an agricultural powerhouse. Other than that, nothing will be left.

Agricultural developement in WB has already reached a near plateu. This sector alone cannot ensure further developement.

Sounds a hard knot for WB - farmers wanna keep their land, while industrialization entails land acquisition.

Is there a 'fair' compensation for farmers for their plots?

Population of WB is almost equivalent to that of Sichuan Province (also agriculture based) but WB is <20% of Sichuan's area. Can agr. absorb the booming manpower? IF it goes down that way, how will WB sustain the growing density?

    Ohim

How much price is fair price? Five times or 100 times the annual earning from land. How much earning do the farmers say they make? Do they ever claim to make a handsome profit? NEVER. It is only now have I heard that farmers have been having SEVEN crops!! SEVEN, sir, seven. Some fast growing crops!!

Mamata will soon find she is caught. Those who have accepted and cashed the checks [90% or so], will soon clamour to get back their lands. Return the money, you say, it is easy. That they say they no longer have!!! Have the cake and eat it too.

Damodar Valley bshould ideally have four more dams. Not possible. Land is in Jharkhand, and benificiary is WB. Expect them to acquire land, when WB farmers don't want to give it ANY purpose? Even expansion of irrigation will need land acquisition. No more irrigation expansion, no more power plants, no more industries. Where is WB heading?
