NEW DELHI: In a major setback to West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta high court division bench on Friday held the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, as unconstitutional and void.

The court favoured the Tata Motors' appeal against a trial court order which upheld the act, and gave the West Bengal government two months to appeal before the Supreme Court.

After coming to power in the state, the Mamata Banerjee government passed the act, which empowered them to return 400 acres of land to Tata Motors at Singur.

In September, 2011, a single judge bench had ruled in favour of the state government after which Tata Motors moved an appeal before the division bench. Tata Motors had been leased 997 acre at Singur in Hooghly district, by the Left Front government for its Nano car project.

It will be interesting how things turn out.

It can turn into a huge law and order problem when the court order is being implemented.

But the silver lining is that there are many who are now grousing that they agitated alright, but now are left holding the can. The choice for them being the Devil or the Deep Sea.

Conspiracy theory....Could it be double standards....I feel that Mamata would have realised that the economy of Kolkata is in a mess and the Centre is not providing any good package, so lets bring the Tata's back, however she cannot go openly about it because she stiffly opposed it so she (a mastermind) plays a different card, gets the trial court verdict nullified.

Tata khush, Mamata khush, Commerce lobby khush.

Now we shall see how things turn out, Will Tata invest and set up another plant in Singur or let the land be vacant ? that's the million dollar question.

She knew beforehand that it is unconstitutional. She made it as an attempt to eye-wash so that she can say the Singur farmers, "I tried to return your land but the Court did not allow me." Those farmers who have not taken cheque from Buddha Gvt (200 of total 1100 families) are the real sufferers. They neither have the land nor the compensation. Just WB lost a big project thanks to Banerjee....

Perhaps it is about time these obdurate farmers, who believed TMC and Maoist propaganda, should shoulder some of the blame for their actions? Sure, they cannot be held accountable for giving away their land, because they did not want to, but now, can they now at least cash in their cheques and move on - or is it that they cannot since the case is sub-judice? Keep in mind, majority of farmers willingly gave land.

Yes, even if they get the land, it is difficult to cultivate in it.

Let's hope it brings some sense and law into all this silly political populism as also high handed land acquisitions.

The fool Central Govt should delay no more on the Land Acquisition Bill!

Heard of the name KG Balakrishnan?

    He is the ex CJI.

    Heard of Dinakaran?

Heard about the bail given to the Mining Barons?

Heard of the Supreme Court advise to 'Go with the direction of the wind' and words to that effect?

    Law indeed forever!
