The 15,000 km long, 3.84 Tbps connection between Europe, Middle East and India known as Europe-India Gateway is nearing completion. A consortium of 16 companies (including US based Verizon and AT&T) invested close to $700 million for the project.

Indian Internet service provider, Sify Technologies Limited announced that they have partnered with Saudi Telecom who is one of the EIG consortium members. This deal allows Saudi Telecom access to the Indian telecommunication market and gives Sify a stake in the Middle Eastern and African markets where Saudi Telecom has significant market share. Good use of the EIG infrastructure by both companies!

Last year, Sify inked a deal with Gulf Bridge International (GBI), a submarine cable system in Middle East that has a landing point in Mumbai. EIG has 13 landing points across Europe, Middle East and India. GBI has 10, with 8 in Middle East, 1 in Milan and Mumbai. These strategic partnerships make Sify a global telecom player and will add value for both the enterprise and regular customers courtesy the bandwidth at their disposal.

Sify Chairman Raju Vegesna said, "We will have over 50 Gbps of bandwidth between India, Middle East and Europe and this will establish our presence and reputation on the Global Telecom map. Our International services now have a world class cable system backing to serve the growing markets in the Middle East and Africa. We are working with our Middle East Telecom partners to create seamless network services to serve Indian, Asian & US Carriers and Business and help them connect to Middle Eastern countries."

Competing Indian service providers like Airtel and BSNL are part of the EIG consortium as well.
