Few years ago the PETA activists became successful in banning the culling of dogs. Earlier the govt used to gather all the dogs on the streets in wagons and kill them painlessly--a process known as culling .

Now the activity of the PETA people ( including enlisting celebrities for the cause ) has allowed the pariah dogs to roam around freely on the streets biting people untrammeled .The number of dogs is increasing day by day ,and no solution to their overpopulation is being found.

Due to their biting, rabies cases are on the rise ,and people without access to anti-rabies vaccines are dying .Only the pharma companies are enjoying a profit as anti-rabies vaccines are being taken increasingly by those who can afford them ,though the cost of each of the shots is 300 rupees each ,and five shots have to be taken totalling 1500 rupees.

In order to protect humans , should culling be restarted immediately ??

Stray dogs are a real problem in Bangalore. They chase vehicles and attack in groups after 10 PM. Their population needs to be culled. People feeding stray dogs should be fined heavily. If someone or PETA have a problem with culling, they should locate those dogs inside their compound and homes. Let's see how big the crying hearts actually are.

    Sharia law against dogs?
If a dog bites, you should bite back.

The Americans shoot their own dogs in case of dog attacks. So, why can't we do the same to strays?

I recently read a report where a Brit woman refused to get her wound treated after her dog bit her because she knew the dog would be culled. She died due to infections.

This story, is the exact opposite, where the dog shoots a man.

the culling should be done by individuals who are victims of riots or seperatist movements to harden them to be able strike back at the rioters . kashmiri pandits should practice culling .

muslims however should be exempt as they practise killing of goats on bakri-eid anyway and this hardens them .

    Neuter them. Why kill them?

Hello - can we hang Kasab first before we even think of culling dogs?

I heard the dog population in Amdavad has been reduced drastically due to neutering. I heard its more effective (and more humane!) then culling.

Nope, it shouldn't. Every creature deserves to live unless it becomes an existential threat to someone else.

Whenever someone casts vote in poll of old thread, it bumps up. Same must have happened here.

As an avid dog lover and dog owner I can honestly say that Indian cities need to seriously ramp up their general level of hygiene and safety, and sadly culling stray and feral dogs is a big part of it.

Having said that the other thing that really needs to happen is more awareness among dog owners. India compared to developed nations has a poor dog culture. People don't bother to neuter/ spay and train their pets appropriately, nor do dog owners bother to pick up after their pets. There is no point in simply culling strays when un neutered pets belonging to irresponsible owners are out there breeding uncontrollably and defecating all over the place with impunity.

As with most problems, the solution doesn't merely rest in government action, people themselves have to step up and do their part to truly fix the issue.
