More than two dozen people, mostly elementary school children, were shot and killed at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school this morning, federal and state sources tell ABC News.
The massacre involved two gunmen and prompted the town of Newtown to lock down all of its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today.
One shooter is dead and a manhunt is on for a second gunman. Police are searching cars. One shooter was described as a 24-year-old armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet vest, sources told ABC News.
It's unclear how many people have been shot, but 25 people, mostly children are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. That number could rise, officials said.
President Obama was briefed on the shooting by FBI Director Bob Mueller.
It is the worst shooting in a U.S. elementary school in recent memory and exceeds the carnage at 1999 Coumbine High School shooting in which 13 died and 24 were injured.
The Newtown shooting comes just three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Oregon, mall killing two before turning the gun on himself.
Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which includes 450 students in grades from kindergarten through fourth grade. The town is located about 12 miles east of Danbury.

State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.
A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.

Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.
"Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown," the statement said. "This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand."
Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's school were locked down because of the report of a shooting. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff."
State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.
All public and private schools in the town are on lockdown.
"We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims," Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.
State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.
A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no mid-day bus runs.

Ryan Lanza Identified as Connecticut Elementary School Shooter | Fox News Latino

Ryan Lanza Identified as Connecticut Elementary School Shooter

NEWTOWN, CONN. – A shooter at a Connecticut elementary school that left 27 people dead, including 18 children, was identified as 20-year-old Ryan Lanza.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the Lanza, who was killed at the scene, had apparent ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that police were searching a location in New Jersey in connection with the shootings. Authorities say before the shooting he may have killed his own mother.

The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. The town is more than 90 percent white and five percent Latino, according to the U.S. Census.

The shooting is the latest mass violent incident in a year that in recent days saw a deadly mall shooting in Oregon, and months ago a gunman opened fire in a suburban Colorado movie theater that killed about a dozen. Both gunmen are in their 20's. The Oregon shooter killed himself after killing two other people.

State police say Newton police called them around 9:40 a.m. A SWAT team was among the throngs of police to respond.

Speaking at a brief conference, Connecticut state police said that the shooter is deceased and remains inside the school.

"The scene is secure, the situation is secure," said Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance. "The public is not in danger."

Photos from the scene showed young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.

President Obama was notified around 10:30 in the morning.

"I would rather not relay reactions at this point because I don't have any confirmation to give to you about exactly what has happened or potential victims," said White House Press Secreatry Jay Carney. "The president is a father... he feel's enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and those enduring what appears to be very tragic event."

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Andrea Rynn, a spokeswoman at the hospital, said it had three patients from the school but she did not have information on the extent or nature of their injuries.

Mergim Bajraliu, 17, heard the gunshots echo from his home and raced to check on his 9-year-old sister at the school. He said his sister, who was fine, heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. He said teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.

"Everyone was just traumatized," he said.

Richard Wilford's 7-year-old son, Richie, is in the second grade at the school. His son told him that he heard a noise that "sounded like what he described as cans falling."

The boy told him a teacher went out to check on the noise, came back in, locked the door and had the kids huddle up in the corner until police arrived.

"There's no words," Wilford said. "It's sheer terror, a sense of imminent danger, to get to your child and be there to protect him."

Horrible and sad incident... again the "Gun Culture" coming in light.

A 20 year old guy killed 27 ppl including 20 kids and principal and teacher included. Interestingly the guy killed his mom as well who was a teacher in the school... shocking.

Let's see more details as the matter comes up in investigation.

Conn. school shooter identified as Adam Lanza

Conn. school shooter identified as Adam Lanza

Authorities have identified the man suspected of killing 27 people at a Connecticut school as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary left 20 children dead, reports said.

According to news reports, the Lanza opened fire at the school in Newton, Conn., Friday morning. There may be more victims at other locations, including the gunman's home.

The suspect reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Lanza's mother was a kindergarten teacher at the school. She is presumed to have been killed.

Earlier reports said that 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, Adam's brother, was the shooter. A report from a law enforcement official mixed up the brother's names, leading to widespread postings of the older brother's photograph by news organizations, including this one.

Photos of the older brother were posted on his Facebook page, which identified his connections with Hoboken, N.J. and Newton. That page was taken down early Friday afternoon.

"Our hearts are broken today," President Barack Obama said. "We have endured too many of these tragedies."

The nation has been "through this too many times," with recent mass shootings, and must take action "regardless of the politics."
