The army is gearing up to hold one of its biggest ever war games - Shoorveer - in Rajasthan between March and June.

The exercise, involving the army's elite 1 Strike Corps and 10 Corps under the Jaipur-based South Western Command, will see the deployment of more than 200 tanks and over 20,000 troops in the border state.

'All formations and units under South Western Command will participate to validate doctrines in a joint service environment,' army spokesperson Col Jagdeep Dahiya said.

The war game comes soon after the army's exercise Sudarshan Shakti in Pokharan to validate its new battle-fighting concepts developed after the transformation studies carried out under army chief General V.K. Singh.

The exercise, one of the biggest manoeuvres ever based on the Integrated Theatre Battle Concept, will be held in the deserts of Bikaner and Shri Ganganagar.
PREVIOUS SHOWS OF STRENGTH

SUDARSHAN SHAKTI (2011):
This exercise in Rajasthan's
Barmer-Jaisalmer sector involved around 50,000 troops and 100 tanks and artillery guns. Fighter aircraft also took part

OPERATION PARAKRAM
(2001-02): This operation was a 11-month-long border stand-off with Pakistan. It took place after the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001

OPERATION VIJAY (1999)
: The army codenamed the Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan — to push back the infiltrators from across the border — as Operation Vijay

OPERATION BRASSTACKS

(1986-87): It was one of the largest mobilisations of armed forces in the subcontinent. It was held in Rajasthan during November 1986 and March 1987

'It will enable the army to validate its war fighting concepts while working towards a 'capability- based approach', relying on a series of transformational initiatives, concepts, organisational structures and absorption of newage technology,' Dahiya said.

The Western and South Western Commands of the air force are also likely to deploy their frontline aircraft, including the Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000, Jaguars and AWACs, for the war game.

'The joint synergy will be enhanced by the active participation of the IAF with the air assets of the army and the air force being employed in an integrated manner,' Dahiya said.

The South Western Command is being commanded by Lt. Gen. Gyan Bhushan.

Battlefield transparency and operational plans based on realtime situational awareness will be enhanced using intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) inputs from unmanned aerial vehicles, radars and satellites.

The troop and equipment mobilisation for the exercise has already begun. This will be followed by training at unit and formation levels and culminate into large scale manoeuvres.

This is Big. The first exercise with all assets integrated with each other. All aircraft networked to Phalcons and other ground, space and air assets. The ground troops networked to satellites and aircraft along with HQ. Our top brass can see everything that's going on in real time.

Pakis are shitting.
Even before that. Announcing cold start alone was enough.

New Delhi, Apr 23 (PTI) With some of the frontline fighter aircraft and other aerial assets from Indian Air Force (IAF) providing support, Indian Army is all set to test its desert warfare skills in the peak summer in Rajasthan. Codenamed 'Exercise Shoorveer', the exercise is aimed at validating the fighting skills of its troops during peak summer, along with accuracy and lethality of its modern weapon systems, Indian Army officials said here today. "At present, the formations are practicing their battle drills in designated training areas... A number of field firings are being carried out to check the accuracy and lethality of the weapon systems," they said. The exercise will also provide a platform to validate new concepts, modifications, armaments and logistics inducted by the force in the last few years. Defence Minister A K Antony will visit the exercise to review the war games and interact with the troops and senior army officials. "A large number of innovations and modifications carried out by the Army units and formations to enhance their combat power are being tested in the field", the officials said. On participation of IAF, they said "the momentum of training is gradually building up with the increased combat tempo to set the stage for a major joint Army-Air Force exercise." The exercise will culminate with Jaipur-based Sapta Shakti Command along with IAF carrying out swift battle manoeuvers and joint operations, they said.

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) With Parliament session on and other commitments, Defence Minister A K Antony will skip the review of culminating stages of exercise 'Shoorveer' in Rajasthan, which will be attended by Army Chief Gen V K Singh. The Defence Minister was scheduled to witness a joint drill of Indian Army and IAF in deserts close to Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan on May 3, sources said here. But Parliament is in session and there are several other commitments due to which the Defence Minister will not be able to witness the summer training exercise of the forces, they said. Antony was to witness the exercise along with Army Chief Gen V K Singh who will reach the area on May 2. Spearheaded by Jaipur-based South Western Command of Indian Army- also known as the Sapta Shakti Command- the exercise involves army troops sharpening their battle skills in peak of summer. The exercise is conducted with more than 50,000 troops from infantry, armoured and artillery units coordinating their skills to mount an offensive on the enemy. During the culmination stage, the Indian Army would be assisted by frontline fighter aircraft of the IAF which would assist the troops in launching a concerted attack on the enemy defences. "The exercise would be a platform to validate the new concepts, systems, equipments and arms inducted into the Army in recent years," officials said. A large number of innovations and modifications which were carried out by the Army units and formations recently to enhance their combat power are being tested in the field, they said.
