A shipwreck containing 200 tonnes of silver worth about £150m has been found in the Atlantic - the largest haul of precious metal ever discovered at sea.

The SS Gairsoppa, a UK cargo ship sunk by a German U-boat in 1941, was found by US exploration firm Odyssey Marine.

The firm will retain 80% of the cargo's value under the terms of a contract with the Department for Transport.

Only one person from the 85-strong crew survived the torpedo attack as the ageing steamer tried to reach Ireland.

Since the silver originally came from India,we have as right over his haul as the colonial govt that exported it.We must explore the possibility of torpedoing this recovery deal unless we are given a share in it.

Can you explain this bit in detail SATA? How does the fact that the silver came from India give us rights over it.
I am thinking from a legal perspective, not an emotional or patriotic one.

The US salvage company gets 80% and the UK gets 20%. You get nothing as usual.

Uncovered: An intact toilet sits on the bridge deck of the SS Gairsoppa

The SS Gairsoppa was a steel-hulled British cargo steamship that began her career in 1919 under the service of the British India Steam Navigation Company of London

Well this Odyssey Marine has been involved in several controversial ship salvaging incidents, whose ownership is still entangled in legal wrangles. There is this incident involving the discovery of Spanish treasure by the Odyssey Marine, which was contested by both UK and Spain.Since it exists and has not been consumed and transformed in a manner where its different from the cargo that loaded from Calcutta,India perhaps can claim that the cargo represents colonial heritage and as such we have equal claim to it.There is enough things we can do to throw a spanner in the works, that is if we are interested.

Just like France after WW2.
France got about $5 billion in reparations from Germany and Italy after WWII. In today's value it is worth $50 billion. I wouldn't call that chump change as it is far more than most countries got from destroyed Germany. We got far more out of it in WWI when they paid us $50 billion which today would be worth $500 billion. They actually only finished paying off the last interest a year ago today.

First of all the Silver if it is not legally taken from India has to be returned to India. They have the audacity to say in the same breath that India was always a poor country while haveing reaped of her for many years. Tons of silver and gold looted and they claim captalism saved India? How annoying these westerners are have they no respect for others.

As usual, India won't get anything as Armand said. Just like we never got an iota of all the precious jewels that were looted during the British colonial rule, and I am sure we never will. So don't crib about us not getting anything from this haul.

Dont expect the thieves to give it back just like that. First we have to ask and demand that our wealth is returned to us.

India was under british rule back then. all of India belonged to them. they took away as much as they can, this thing is one of the items they took away.
they had a right to exploit India( may read it loot). India have no right to claim this silver.

Great business strategy.......tried with successful results 2x. Why fight to win wars and die, when you can lose and take money from the victors when it is over.
