China's Next Manned Spaceflight Enters Final Prep Phase.
Main objectives
Chinese space officials have noted that Shenzhou 10 will be the first "operational" flight in the Chinese human spaceflight program, with four main objectives:

  • To ferry a crew and materials between the ground and the Tiangong 1 module and test the performance of the Shenzhou human capsule and its docking system;
  • To further test the crew's ability to fly, live and work in the Shenzhou-Tiangong spacecraft complex;
  • To demonstrate the adaptability and efficiency of the crew in the space environment and broadcast a classroom lesson to Chinese students;
  • To further test the coordination among different systems in the human spaceflight program.

Female astronaut candidate
Zhou Jianping, chief engineer of China's manned space program, told news media in March that one of the three astronauts onboard Shenzhou 10 will include a woman.

While the names of the Shenzhou 10 crew remain unknown, and are typically not released until a few days before the mission, Wang Yaping is being spotlighted by Chinese media as the only female astronaut candidate being considered for the Shenzhou 10 spacecraft.

Born in 1980 in the eastern coastal city of Yantai, Shandong Province, Wang is a People's Liberation Army Air Force pilot.

In March 2010, China completed the process of selecting a new group of astronauts for its human spaceflight program: Seven Air-Force pilots, including five men and two women, were selected as the astronaut candidates. Wang was one of the two female candidates selected from 15 finalists.

Shenzhou 10 will be China's fifth manned space mission. The first Chinese astronaut, Yang Liwei, flew to orbit in 2003. Before this mission, eight Chinese astronauts — including one woman, Liu Yang — have gone into space.

Steady progress
"As China's human space program continues its steady progress towards the construction of a small space station — scheduled to be completed around the end of the decade — international interest in the program appears to be waning," said Gregory Kulacki, senior analyst and China project manager for the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. [How China's First Space Station Will Work (Infographic)]

Kulacki said that, of all the elements of the mission being talked about in the Chinese press prior to the Shenzhou 10 launch, the educational activities planned for the flight are gaining the most attention. The three-person crew plans to broadcast lessons on space science and exploration to Chinese students across the country.

"China's human spaceflight program now seems to be less threatening to U.S. observers who originally viewed the program with some suspicion," Kulacki said. "More relaxed U.S. attitudes about the program, combined with the slow but steady pace of Chinese progress in human spaceflight, may create opportunities for U.S.-Chinese cooperation and collaboration in space."

However, NASA is currently barred by Congress from collaborating directly with the Chinese space agency.

I wish China best of luck. :thumb:

India should also try to become the fourth country (after Russia, US and China) to launch manned mission to space. :happy:

a 13'45'' of video covers the whole porcess of SZ-10's lauch today....it's a very interesting popularization of space science for common people ,especially the kids.

@ 01:11 lifting
@ 03:13 escape tower separation
@ 03:46 the separation of 4 strap-on boosters and 1st stage
@ 04:44 the separation of the fairing
@ 08:57 the 2nd stage engine turn off
@ 10:47 the separation of spacecraft with the 2nd stage

Space exploration and colonization is the only long-term survival strategy of the human species. Any nation which puts its resources into making this cheaper and more feasible is to be applauded.

it seems that your congraulation comes almost 10 years late, and today's launch is the 10th spacecraft and 5th manned spacecraft
...but anyway ,thank you all for your best wishes.

Shenzhou 5 (simplified Chinese: 神舟五号; traditional Chinese: 神舟五號; pinyin: shénzhōu wÇ” hào) — was the first human spaceflight mission of the People's Republic of China (PRC), launched on October 15, 2003. The Shenzhou spacecraft was launched on a Long March 2F launch vehicle. There had been four previous flights of unmanned Shenzhou missions since 1999. China became the third country in the world to have independent human spaceflight capability after the Soviet Union (later, Russia) and the United States.

@shiphone

I heard some unfortunate news about delays in other major space programs, like CZ-5, CZ-7 and Tiangong-2.

Anything you can share with us?

china started with a simple one man mission with 14 orbits of the earth in 2003 - they started small but kept building and now their program and know-how is gaining momentum and beginning to get into the multiplier effect area

in contrast out isro although having made some progress is still having a flexible deadline attitude and hasnt made the initial manned space launch - we are still stuck with 2G spectrum cases , molestation, rape cases on a daily basis and all sorts of mis-management in our public administration - that mentality has to change otherwise we will always be in a class far below china

no doubt this is not all that is happening in india - there is lots of progress being made in every area .- but the lesson we have to learn from reality is that the progress we indeed ARE making is unfortunately not quite enough - and it's not just because we are unfortunate enough to have china as a neighbour, the competition , especially in these high tech areas has no geographical definition, it is global - it affects the usa as much as it does india .

so what progress are we making regarding our manned space program ..... im not condemning it - but are we making sufficient progress ? - because one of our guiding principles should be that we cant afford to lag too far behind china - everything they do, especially in this area of space technology has a military aspect to it, and they will use it on the ground to leverage advantage - whether in Aksai Chin or Arunachal ...... they might race so far ahead as to be able to do another 1962 on us - not at all inconceivable imho !

we have to keep the gap at a reasonable size to be able to close it without too much difficulty in terms of finance and technology if we really need to - but at this rate with them racing ahead and our isro having a slower pace , the concern is that they may leave us too far behind

@shiphone, @t_co, I heard that it was China's fifth manned flight, so I am sorry :redface:

We Asians are proving to the almighty arrogant west that they aren't the only ones with brains :)

Money, my friend, the only which does matter in this so called "race" is: Chinese scientists got far more money than their indian counterpart.

No, USA is only feeling nervous about the possibility that China may threat its dominance in one day. On the other hand, India is facing a fact: it is not winning in its race against China.

Well, my friend, you just think too high about India's importance in Chinese strategy: India is not even in top list of threats.

we have to keep the gap at a reasonable size to be able to close it without too much difficulty in terms of finance and technology if we really need to - but at this rate with them racing ahead and our isro having a slower pace , the concern is that they may leave us too far behind
The difficulty was and will always be FINANCE.

yes...CZ-2,3 ,4 serial(Long March 2,3,4 serial) are all all-liquid fuelled rockets.

----------------------------------
and the next Generation Long March family would have an all-solid fuel Rocket CZ11(LM11,Long March 11) along with the CZ-5,6,7,9 which would be all liquid fueled rockets...CZ11 is the planned to take off in 2014.

the first launch of CZ-5 which was planned in 2014 might split to year 2015-16 , the another importand model CZ-7 might be delayed as well. from year 2014 to 2015...CZ-7 would lift the next space lab (Tian Gong-2 ,TG-2, around 13 tons vs TG1's 8.5 tons) into space. the delay of CZ-7 might affect the TG-2 project.

in the first years of 21 century , a solid fueled KT-1 was also developped.

The KT-1 (Kaitouzhe-1) launcher is a small, solid fueled launch vehicle, which is based on the road mobile DF-21 IRBM with an additional upper stage. It has the capability to launch a small 100 kg into a low earth orbit. Possibly it is the launch vehicle for the chinese ASAT system, which was tested against an old chinese weather satellite in 2007.

another model based on DF31 is KT-2 serial ...but no launch record so far

KT-1A ,KT-1 and KT-2
