Shah Rukh Khan is West Bengal's brand ambassador

Kolkata: Gujarat may have the Big B, but Bengal has King Khan. Not to be outdone by Narendra Modi in roping in tourists, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has enlisted the help of Shah Rukh Khan by making him the state's brand ambassador.

State Tourism Minister Rachpal Singh said, "We know Amitabh Bachchan as the Gujarat's brand ambassador but now we have Shah Rukh. He has great acceptability. We can tap into foreign market."

Bengal is a state that boasts both mountains and the sea. Yet tourism had lagged for decades under the Left rule. Shah Rukh, who already owns the Kolkata Knight Rider's franchise, has a special place in the Bengali heart.

But as is typical in Bengal, there are voices of criticism too.

Bengal has had a long lull in tourism. Now with Brand Shah Rukh propping up Brand Bengal, the government certainly hopes to break that jinx and revive an economy that has been on life support for too long.

Hoepfully this rejuvenates Bengal Tourism. Except for Darjeeling and Kolkata, I have not heard much about Bengal's tourism places.

^^ Calcutta is overrated; Darjeeling is in a state of semi-band last I heard thanks to Gorkhland protests.

I have known a few natives from there who still prefer to say Bombay.

And a lot of people in my state still use the word Madras instead of Chennai.

    Name changes nothing.

The name change part was all political gimmicks. What has changed since the name change? I mean what can change anyways? A lot of people call it Calcutta only even now.... My brother in law and so my sister is known as Calcuttawala. Now they cannot change to Kolkatawala can they?

Its Maratha. And Calcutta sounds a bit more posh, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed by "Kolkatta"

I don't like Kolkata since quite a few non Bengalis mispronounce the word.

They stupidly add an 'aw' to the pronunciation.

They pronounce as Kawl- kata or Kaul-Kata. Check it out when the TV anchors mention Kolkata.

As if every Bengali pronunciation has to have 'aw' like Rawshogolla! They will say Rawshawgawllah!

Pronunciation of Kolkata is Coal - Kata! The 't;' being soft.
