Like many members of the Indian diaspora, caste has become less of an issue for overseas Indians over the years. I would say that most members of the younger generation now prefer to find their own partners through college/work and caste is not a factor in partner selection, but more a question of 'how do we tell our parents' - who in turn tend to be relieved that their offspring has just found somebody Indian.

However, with the advent of online dating, all the Indian websites I have come across provide for selection by caste - a function which seems to be actively used. Is this just reflecting their customer's preferences? of is this a retrograde step that is promoting castism through the back door, and should therefore abolished?

I think it just reflects the customer preferences like multiple other preferences. You always have the option of caste no bar thing in your profile. As long as arranged marriages dominate the marriage scene, caste would be a big factor.
