I think the Saudis were planning to get those nuclear warheads from Pakistan.
Yeah they have that agreement, but if they can get better yield warheads from chinese, they'll go for it.

Yeah, can't rely on US security alone, if ASEAN needs Nuclear insurance, then they can only get it through SLBM's,through a nuclear sharing agreement like NATO.

Re: Saudis parade nuclear missiles for the first time in defiance of U

The Saudis have only showed the DF3s. They got DF-21s in 2007. That they finances the Sunni Bomb is well known. That Pak has/will supply nukes to KSA is also known/expected.

@ poster above,in 1987 Iran was still at war with Iraq.Iraq lobbed missiles at Israel in 1991. In 87, Saudis didn't need a nuclear capable missile. In 2007, US didn't have good relations with Iran as the Saudis site as the reason to explore "other" options.

Saudis always wanted nuke capability to back up its ideological push around the world. In Pak it has a safe custodian of nukes which it can get any time. That the missiles were paraded in front of Gen Raheel is another "message"
I have been keeping away from the forum but had to reply to this. Just thinking about the implications of such events on international security.

At a macro level, the actions of nations such as Saudi, Pakistan, North Korea and China have basically done is opened up a grey market for nukes. What this means is nuclear proliferation is becoming more and more meaningless in this world. High oil prices to fund the strategic ambitions of oil rich states and simultaneous economic bankruptcy of Pakistan and North Korea could soon push in a new world where nukes are available to all, at the right price. We could very soon see a bidding war among middle east countries for Pakistani nukes. What it will do is encourage countries like Pakistan to produce more and more nukes without any consideration of long term risks.

Unfortunately, US and EU, which have so far vehemently resisted any attempt by any country to arm itself with nuclear weapons may be powerless when met with cash rich Saudi. And even 70 years after the first bomb was dropped, there is still no credible defence against nuclear weapons. All this indicates to a far dangerous future, at least during the cold war, nuclear weapons were with the nations who had something to lose. Now we have rogue states such as Pakistan who openly advertise their suicidal tendencies as a deterrent to conventional invasion. India would do well to marshal its resources to discourage such instances as the Saudi missile parade.

they certainly can.

BTW what's offered to Saudi isn't nuclear capable as checked by CIA according to various reports.

Saudi Arabia admits to purchase of Chinese DF-21 missile

Saudi Arabia purchased DF-21 ballistic missiles from China to defend Mecca and Medina, said Dr. Anwar Eshqi, a retired major general and advisor to the joint military council of Saudi Arabia, during a press conference.

Saudi Arabia purchased DF-21 ballistic missiles from China to defend Mecca and Medina, said Dr. Anwar Eshqi, a retired major general and advisor to the joint military council of Saudi Arabia, during a press conference.

"Saudi military did indeed receive DF-21 missiles from China and the integration of the missiles, including a full maintenance check and upgraded facilities, is complete," said Eshqi as cited in the state-run newspaper OKAZ. In addition to defending two holy cities of Islam, the DF-21 will also be used to form a protective umbrella to defend Saudi Arbia's allies over the Persian Gulf, he added, indicating that the missiles are not for offensive attacks.

The missile has a range of between 1000-1700 miles, and is believed to have a top speed of around Mach 5. Saudi Arbia signed contract with China to purchase DF-21s back in 2007, but neither side admitted to the deal, according to a US-based Newsweek report. Saudi Arabia is probably buying and announcing the purchase as a message to deter Iran.

The United States approved the sale of DF-21s to Saudi Arabia as long as they are not nuclear-capable variants of the missile, said the Newsweek report. Eshqi did state that the purchased DF-21s, however, can be equipped with a nuclear warhead. The decision made by the Saudi Arbian government to purchase Chinese instead of American missile systems shows that Riyadh is being pushed further away from Washington by its international policy towards towards Iran and Syria.
