Indian prisoner on death row, Sarabjit Singh, was attacked by five of his fellow prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore on Friday, reported Express News.
According to initial details, the prisoners injured Sarabjit by hitting a brick on his head and hurling other items inside the jail over an argument. Further investigations into the incident are underway.
Sarabjit was shifted to a hospital, where doctors said he was in critical condition.
Express News correspondent Noman Sheikh reported that Sarabjit was being kept in a separate barrack but the incident took place during lunch time.
The prisoners who attacked were identified and sent to separate barracks for interrogation. Initial reports suggested that the five prisoners were also on death row.
The jail authorities have not given out any official statements to the media yet.
Last year in September, Sarabjit wrote a letter to his sister and daughters saying that the authorities at Kot Lakhpat jail were slow-poisoning and mentally torturing him. Sarabjit had accused the jail officials of "conspiring to drive him insane" and ridiculing him when he asked them for painkillers.
According to the prosecution, Sarabjit had illegally crossed into Pakistan from Kasur on August 29, 1990.
He was arrested on charges of conducting four bomb blasts in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore. He is named Manjeet Singh in the FIR. He was sentenced to death.
His counsel claimed it was a case of mistaken identity

He was not saved old boy.

He was just lucky that the blood thirsty Pakistanis were too busy killing each other - Shia, Sunni and the works!

Please note, one more expletive and you shall be shown the door!

I have no time for people who use language associated with guttersnipes!

Political plot behind assault: Pak human rights activist

Ansar Burney, Pakistan's human rights activist and one of Sarabjit Singh's counsels, on Saturday saw a conspiracy behind the attack on the Indian death row prisoner.

Burney didn't rule out a "political plot" behind the near fatal attack on Sarabjit as Pakistan goes to polls in two weeks. "There appears to be a deep-rooted conspiracy to attack Sarabjit ahead of polls which should be investigated," he said.

Talking to TOI over phone from Karachi, Burney said, "I see some foul play in it. Pakistan government was not releasing Sarabjit and it couldn't hang him due to international pressure. So an attack on him could serve the purpose to gain support from fundamental elements during polls."

He said since Friday he had been getting threats from various Taliban groups and fundamentalists, who are inimical to peace with India, forcing him to postpone his visit to Lahore to meet the Indian prisoner. "But I have sent Ansar Burney Trust volunteers to provide all help to Sarabjit Singh," he said.

Burney said the Trust had moved a fresh mercy petition before the Pakistan president to commute the death sentence , its 14th petition for Sarabjit.

Another human rights activist and advocate from UK Jas Uppal echoed Burney's views. "Pakistan authorities most likely encouraged the attack on Sarabjit as they knew that it could help them during elections," he told TOI over phone from London. Jas had launched a worldwide 'Save Sarabjit' campaign.

She said it was difficult to understand how the attackers got bricks and sharp objects in prison and that there was no security around or intervention by the prison wardens. Jas said she had been informed by the Red Cross in Pakistan that they had been refused permission to meet him. "If this is indeed the case, then the Pakistani authorities are in breach of international law," she said.

Deepak Kumar, son of Indian prisoner Chamel Singh who was killed in a similar assault by fellow inmates in the same prison on January 15, said, "Who can feel the pain more? I lost my father recently in a similar attack."

Talking to TOI from Jammu, he said, "I think now they hate Indians after the hanging of Ajmal Kasab and wanted to take revenge on hapless Indian prisoners."

He said attack on Sarabjit reminded him of the torture meted out to his father. "My father was also admitted in the same Jinnah Hospital in Lahore after he was brutally assaulted and he died in the same hospital," he said.

Chamel Singh, a resident of Jammu, was arrested in 2010 at Sialkot and was awarded five years' imprisonment for spying. He was brought to Kot Lakhpat jail in June 2012.
Your own Pakistani Human rights activist reported this.

Not to worry.

One person wrote, "Piglet" in reply to your post.

Check and it was immediately edited.

Further, there are many who receive infractions and banning irrespective of nationality, based solely on the content of the post and abusive language.

So, unlike your forums, we are quick to take necessary action if we find something wrong.

It is not about one city that one is writing about sectarian killings of Shia and Sunni.

It is just a bit extraordinary that both believe in the same religion, goes by the same teachings as contained in the Koran and yet they kill each other! And that happens in Pakistan and not in India where we too have Shias and Sunnis!

You are right, Pakistan 'cages' people,. we imprison them!

If he was caged, then how was he attacked?
He was attacked because a frustrated failed nation wanted to vent her frustration out on a defenseless person who is compressed into a midget, tortured and weak serving jail term for the crime he hasn't done. Since he is an Indian they can attack in packs and all the cowardice is justified.

As one of their terrorist Kasab who brought shame to Pakistani nation was hanged in India after given a fair trail so like Chamel Singh, now Surjeet Singh was murdered by them. As they are a dysfunctional state having kangaroo courts, inhuman law enforcement and having for name sake dodgy correction centers, from where terrorists are allowed to break free; they can't do better than this.

Pakistan allows consular access to Sarabjit, says family can visit him
Latest update
Pakistan allows consular access to Sarabjit, says family can visit him - Pakistan News - IBNLive
Sarabjit is said to be in a critical state and doctors at Jinnah Hospital have said that chances of his survival are slim.

On Sunday, his family members met him at the hospital and Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur said he was in an extremely tragic condition. "His stomach was bloated. His face was swollen up. He was beaten up so badly," she told CNN-IBN after her visit.

"His daughters couldn't stop crying upon seeing him. I just couldn't move. It was as if I had become a statue of stone," she said, her voice quivering. Dalbir was accompanied by Sarabjit's lawyer, who said that the attack on the Indian was nothing but a conspiracy. "We knew there was a threat to his life. He had indicated it," he said.

Dalbir requested the Indian government to bring Sarabjit back to India.

Why the heck Pak wanted to stop consular access only to buckle under pressure.
Bad judgement on Pak's part as always.

Sarabjit Singh declared brain dead, say unconfirmed sources.

Indian death row convict Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur plans to return to India to seek advice on his treatment in the wake of unconfirmed reports that doctors had declared him brain dead.

Sarabjit's lawyer Awais Sheikh on Tuesday said Dalbir Kaur had informed him a short while ago of her intention to return to India.

It was not immediately clear whether Sarabjit's wife and two daughters would also return to India, he said.

"There are unconfirmed reports that doctors have declared Sarabjit brain dead and Dalbir Kaur's return could be linked to that," Sheikh said on phone from Lahore.

"Dalbir Kaur was asked by the local media if she had agreed to take Sarabjit off ventilator support and she said no," he said.

Sarabjit's family members had arrived in Pakistan on Sunday, two days after the 49-year-old prisoner sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, during a brutal assault by prisoners in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

He has been in a deep coma in an intensive care unit of the Jinnah Hospital and doctors have said his chances of survival are slim.

Sarabjit was convicted by a Pakistani court of alleged involvement in a string of bombings in Punjab that killed 14 people in 1990.

Sarabjit's family says he is the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

RIP

Only a matter of when the ventilator is taken off now.

Poor victim of (deliberately) mistaken identity by genocidal Pakis...

This is a new trend... just weeks or months before any prisoner is set to be released, he gets attacked in jail and killed. Bottomline, anyone who once gets into a paki jail, will never come out alive.
