The Punjab government by SAD-BJP is termed as very corrupt. So how come they are doing well in these election?

Anyway, I will wait for next assembly election. AAP will put up its candidates. Lets see whether they can show improvement of their performance over 2014 general election.

The Indian election scene has gone crazy and unpredictable.

The Punjab result is quite different from the General Election result.

AAP did not compete in these polls?

I would have thought that these were perfect for them to test the waters, given their strength in Punjab.

The story of the day still remained the Independent candidates — most of who were either rebels of major parties or self-proclaimed supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party — who between them gained majority in 29 civic bodies. The Congress managed majority in a mere two towns.

Of the results declared for 2,037 wards by the Election Commission, the Akalis won 813, BJP 348, Congress 253 and Independent candidates 624.

SAD, BJP sweep civic polls; being together does the trick

I guess the story of the day seems corruption is not an issue in Punjab. The reason - After running a corrupt government for 8 years SAD-BJP were able to win 57% of the seats in this local body election.

Is it going to be another Maharashtra where Congress-NCP was able to retain power for 15 years despite running a corrupt government? We will get the answer in few more months.

Delhi was a case of suicide committed by Congress. Typically whenever Congress finds that it cannot hold on to power they give the reins to agents with a common minimum program of using the consolidated vote bank of non-hindus to hold on to power by simply breaking up a small part of the Hindus. To achieve this transfer of vote share Congress needed to guillotine Shiela Dixit.

Amrinder Singh has seen this first hand and he will not let himself be guillotined like Shiela Dixit. Unfortunately he is not much of a consideration since for long the Punjab has undergone the same social change that was done first in Gujarat and later in MP and Chattisgarh. Akalis and BJP are taking over the businesses and cultural life of Punjab completely. Both Akalis and BJP have a strong son of the soil approach. Most City based Punjabis are into 'foreign lifestyle' but if you look carefully at Punjab's statistics on crime against women it indicates a significant difference with the other urban societies of India (eg. Delhi) and semi rural societies (like Western UP). There is still a very strong link to community history and the basic tenets of these histories. It is the later kind of Punjabi (westernised ones) who keep abusing Akalis and BJP rule Punjab. Since this kind is firmly ensconced in the Secular Media so they just dominate the narrative. But the ground situation is different.

It was the last Assembly election that was the real challenge because Akalis were basically on their own. Henceforth things are only going to be difficult for Congress and AAP. What AAP did in Delhi was that they gave a jhunjuna to every section. You have a concern they had the burnol delivered with an innocent smile of a suave Prem Chopra. But Prem Chopra is after all a villian. And villians usually show their true colors towards the end of the movie, when also they meet their true fate.

Congress, Secular media and AAP is also trying to break into Punjab with their own social engineering efforts but I doubt if its going to work. Punjabis are influenced by the West but they are not looking for chalu stuff. The recent troubled history of Punjab and deep roots, ensures that people walk the straight and narrow path.

The only real challenge in Punjab and for which probably even Akalis and BJP have no real solution at state level is the narcotics problem. But with NDA in centre this too may see some improvement. The precursor drugs flow out from India into Pakistan since India has the knowledge base to formulate such chemicals and there are enough criminals doing these precursor drugs. On the other hand from Pakistan comes the purified high grade narcotics. Unfortunately for Punjab, it sits right on top of this two way movement. My suspicion is that the counterfeit currency is some how linked to this narcotics distribution network also. The poorer section in Punjab is hit by the precursors and the better off by the purified stuff from Pakistan.

Had SAD not cornered the majority of the seats and given BJP a larger share, the result would have been even more one sided.
