The United Nations maritime tribunal has ordered Russia to free a Greenpeace vessel and 30 people detained after an oil drilling protest in the Arctic. The court in the German city of Hamburg said a bond of 3.6 million Euros should be posted.

A Russian statement after the ruling said the Hamburg tribunal had no jurisdiction in the case.

The Arctic Sunrise and its crew were detained in September. All but one of those held have now been granted bail. The vessel was sailing under a Dutch flag when it was stopped and searched.

The Dutch authorities, who brought the case, argued that Russia had violated international law by failing to respect the freedom of navigation.

Thank God they did not say Russia failed to respect the freedom of scaling oil rigs.

Some interesting comments:

I wonder what the Israeli's military death squad would have done in this case! But Greenfleas wouldn't dare, because they are a bunch of cowards. ?

Compare this with the Turkish convoy for Gaza boarded by the Israelis
Are you not glad it was the Russians boarding the Arctic Sunrise and not the IDF?
Just saying.?

Those hippies were damn lucky that not only was the ship not directly fired upon (Russians shoot anything designated as pirate) but also that the guy that landed first didnt immediately start ----ing shooting them as soon as they got close.?

The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment.

American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group.

Pussy Riot, Greenpeace activists granted amnesty as State Duma passes bill

Russia's lower house of parliament has given a third reading to the amnesty bill, which means jailed members of Pussy Riot punk band may be freed before the New Year and charges against arrested Greenpeace activists are also to be dropped.

State Duma deputies on Wednesday unanimously supported the amnesty legislation submitted by President Vladimir Putin earlier this month to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the country's Constitution.

Pussy Riot's Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, who are both subject to the amnesty, may be released from prison by New Year's Eve, their lawyer Irina Khrunova told journalists.

"As a matter of fact, the situation entirely depends on whether the administrations of their penal colonies want their soonest release, but I think they would not like to procrastinate the release process for the two girls," she said, as cited by Itar-Tass.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina are serving two-year jail terms for hooliganism for their protest action, called a "punk prayer," in Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral in February 2012. The band's third convicted member, Yeakterina Samutsevich, who received a suspended sentence, is also subject to the amnesty bill, the lawyer said.
